We returned later in the afternoon & all the Eagles were in the trees & the Turkey Vultures were getting their turns!
There is something about the eyes of the Vultures that is very sensitive & wise & gentle.

Today we went for a walk in this neighbourhood & the Sea Lion was still there being fed on by lots of Eagles & Vultures.
There were lots of Eagles & Vultures flying around & perched in the trees, & lots of rusty hinge calls of the youngsters.
On the way home, we passed the Nest, & Mum or Dad had landed in the top of the Nest Tree & we could hear screeping.
Then the other adult landed, as there was a youngster flying right over the Nest.
The adults made really interesting calls!
i also notice there are TWO different screeps coming from this Nest.
So, TWO Eaglets here!
wooohoooo!

I have really been enjoying your photographs of the sea lion and the vulture.  I looked on the enlarged screen of the vultures eyes and really saw a patient and wonderful bird.  oh, too mushy here! lol  It is just a surprise to me as their  reputation is not one of patience.  I saw this with the vultures in South Georgia and saw they were always sharing their food like the fish they gave the Jonny Rooks only to wait for any leftovers.(

i found this individual low down in a tree with a good view of the washed up Sea Lion.
To me they seem very thin.
Also, look at their wing covert feathers i think you call them, the smaller feathers, covering the wing.
Most of them have a dark tip, indicating good food amount at the time they were growing (thanks AJL!), then there is a wide bar of white, indicating lack of food at the time that part of the feather was growing.
Then, next to the body, a not as dark as the tip patch of brown, indicating a better, but not consistent or enough food source.

Oooh what a handsome one! Make sure to click twice on each photo to see the details.

I notice that the less-pigmented parts of the feathers are wearing out faster. According to Scott and McFarland (Bird Feathers: a Guide to North American Species, p. 35) this is the case in normally pigmented feathers also.

It also seems to me that what makes this youngster so striking is that his beak is still dark, even as his eyes are starting to go pale. There is so much variation on the sequence of colour changes as an eagle matures! That is part of why it is so difficult to tell their ages sometimes.

Thanks for the great pictures of the sea lion and the young eagle.  They are great.  It does not look  as though they are getting rid of the sea lion very fast and his size is just amazing.  Thank you for showing the comparison of your boot with his flipper.  WOW!  Red Riding Hood would really be shocked at those teeth if she were to find the sea lion in her grandmother's bed.  :eclol
