Nest # 16, 17, 18, 19 - Belcarra - 2011-2012 season
« on: September 29, 2011, 09:25:10 AM »
This is the thread for posting fotos, videos & discussion of Nest # 16, 17, 18, 19.

The nest is on the north side of the island.
In the 2009 season i went around the island with Doug*s map & tried to find all the nests that i could to document them with my camera.
i went looking for the four nests in this area, & couldn*t find them.
Then i talked to Doug, & the neighbours of this nest, & i learned that this is actually just one pair of eagles that have built multiple nests.
i can hear this nest from the yard of a place i work every week, but i can*t see it from there.
i DO however hear them & spot them in the neighbourhood.
Years ago, this neighbour had the Nest right in their back yard, in full view, & they very much enjoyed watching the goings on of the Eagles nesting.
There are some big trees now missing tops, broken off in the wind.
Perhaps this is what happened to the original Nest Tree.

Last year, 2011, this nest had one eaglet.

Here is winterwren*s map of the Hornby nests, so that you can see where it is.

Here is the second edition of my nest map.

This map sums up our observations of the nests of Hornby Island for the summer of 2011. The information was collected from direct observation by Booni and myself, and from conversations with the nests' neighbours.

Yesterday i saw my first Eagle of the 2012 season!
We were sitting inside when a big pair of wings caught my eye, flying over the yard & away into the trees.
There have been lots of Turkey Vultures here lately, but this pair of wings seemed different to me.
i didn*t have my glasses on, so i didn*t spot the white head & tail.
i thought, too early, couldn*t be an Eagle.
Later in the day, we walked to the beach & sat down in the sun.
There were Gulls calling, & a Loon.
Off in the distance over the water i spotted a huge pair of wings, & i watched them fly along, parallel to the shore, way out there.
Then the sun caught what i thought was a white tail.
No, couldn*t be.
But then the light caught the white head, too.
An Eagle!
There seemed to be some sort of action out there in the far water.
There were Gulls flying around, lots of them, & some on the water, too.
Was there some sort of fish boil going on there?
The Eagle took a few dives at the water, then flew back towards us & landed in the top of a spindly green tree.
While i looked away, they again flew out to the grouping of other birds, & this time they circled & dove at the water for a lot longer.
i am not sure if they ever caught anything, but i did see them fly in again & land in a tree closer to the Nest #20 territory.

Booni
Thank you for wonderful news.  Thank you also for the photos and videos and observations these past few weeks.  Considering the absence of lovely eagles, your and Wren's stories were food for starving nestors, over and over.  You make such a difference and touch so many hearts with your descriptive and moving observations.  You truly make a difference in our lives.   That must've been a thrilling sight!!!
Aloha,
Amy

Yesterday on my way to work i saw two Eagles, each perched in a separate tree close to each other.
i believe these were the Nest #16-19 pair.
They were both way up the hill from the water, closer to where their Nest was located last season.

Well!
Some interesting news to report about Nest #16-19!
We heard reports that the pair here were bringing lots of sticks to a new tree!
This is a tree right on the corner of two roads, in which i*ve photographed the pair.
We heard this from Dan & Nick, who were working on trees in the area.
They said they*d seen an Eagle flying with a huge branch into that tree!
When Mishi & i looked up, there was a definite darkening area of sticks forming near the trunk way up there.
Then we heard from the neighbours that the Eagles are whisking away all the sticks in their yard!
While Mishi & i watched one day, an adult flew in with a long fragile stick.
It was cold & windy, & they had to keep trying to land in the new Nest with the stick.
The stick broke in midair & most of it fell.
But the adult eventually succeeded in landing it into the Nest.
Mishi got some great fotos which i*m hoping she*ll post here one day!

Hope we'll see those Mishi photos after she gets home and has a chance to sleep (at least a little).
