Beth and Tigerlady, good question re Dad being with son. While I was on the drive I didn't hear Tara say anything about them being together. But some months ago they were also seen in close proximity.

Sept. 2, 2011 Afternoon Drive (CAT) with Tara and Becky

Yes, I was actually up in time for the last 45 minutes of the drive. Quite the sight; this time lions. The Matimba Males are a coalition of 6 lions.  They have been gradually been moving into the area. We did see them on a couple of WE drives. They are healthy looking males. Five were seen yesterday and again on the afternoon drive at a buffalo kill.  The sixth one was missing, as is the tip of his tail.

In this picture (with IR light on them) a younger one was trying to grab a bite, under the watchful eye of an older male.

As of tomorrow, North American time, the morning drives are starting a half hour earlier. I am off to change the first post re time.

Have a pleasant long weekend. I will not be here for the Sat. morning drive (this evening our time)

Update re names of Karula's daughter and son.  They were both named just before DPGR took over the drives. The young
  • female's name remains unchanged 'Xivindzi' meaning 'bold'.
  • male was named 'Chava', meaning 'shy'.

Since my return something was posted with a photo saying 'Karula, daughter Xivindzi' and 'unnamed' son'. I asked the group I watch the drives with when / why this happened.  I was informed that the guides didn't like the name,  because they use it so often in describing a condition of an animal at a sighting. It would be too confusing. ??

Archive videos for Djuma Safari do exist. Go to the drives site and click on 'Archives' above the screen.
http://www.wildearth.tv/wildearth-safari-game-drive-africa-presenter-webcam-live-01

The videos that have been made are labelled with title, date and time. But still unable to post a link to them.

The following were recorded while I was away.

1. Karula, female leopard with impala kill ~ 2011-08-26 at 07:42:52 PM

2. Induna, Karula and Cubs on impala kill ~ Morning Drive x 3. At 09:19, 09:29 and 10:13 PM

3. Mvula (Leopard) ~ 2011-08-30 at 07:05:10 PM

4. African Bush Elephants ~ 2011-08-03 x 2. At 07:01:56 and 07:02:44 PM

5. Yambilu-Jordaan with son Induna ~ 2011-09-01 x 3. At 10:57:14 a.m., 10:58:09 a.m., and 11:08:51 a.m.

6. Matimba Male Lions ~ 2011-09-01 x 4. At 02:38:30, 02:48:59, 02:49:08, 02:53:23

Sunday, Sept. 4 Morning Drive (CAT) with Tara and Becky.

Leopards from the get go  :biggrin3

Karula and the twins. Also while we didn't see him Yambilu-Jordaan was nearby. He had been seen earlier scenting an area where Karula had urinated, to see if she was in estrus? Too soon for another pregnancy, the cubs won't be a year old until late October / early November.

The youngsters were having a great time up and down a tree, running away from Karula who then called them.  A couple of times a hyena wandered by but both Karula (on the ground) and the girl cub in the tree were very quiet Tara had leave after about 90 minutes as more vehicles arrived.  I too left and was reading until I decided to do these postings. There was a brief sighting of them again before the drive ended.

6:07 a.m. Karula's cubs out on a limb. The boy cub jumped down and wandered off.

Sunday, Sept. 4 Morning Drive (CAT) with Tara and Becky ~ Part 3

After we left the leopards we saw a bird which we have not seen before in the this area, a 'Senegal Lapwing' or Lesser Black-winged Plover:

Also a pair of Fork-tailed Drongos. They were very close and singing merrily. Tara wondered if this was part of a mating ritual?

Monday, Sept. 5, 2011 Morning Drive (CAT) ~ Marc driving, Seb on camera and Tara in FC.

Not an eventful drive.

View as drive about to start

View before drive started by BBE2009, on Flickr

Marc spent time reminiscing about his childhood, life in the bush and wildlife in a general sense.

Spent some time with two giraffes.

Then we found about 8 or 10 ellies crossing the road and there were 4 youngsters in the group. My photo of the first pair was blurred as older ellie moved in front of them.

'Blue', one of the Admins sent me some info about a story in the September issue of National Geographic magazine. About orphaned elephants in Africa, how they were rescued and cared for by a group of 'keeper's. The keepers even stay with them at night. Eventually the elephants are returned to the bush and a family takes them in.

The story sounded very familiar. I found the magazine yesterday. I was correct it is about the Sheldrick Trust, now carried on by Daphne Sheldrick (who has also done major work in rescuing and saving Black Rhinos).

Links related to work done by David (deceased in 1977) and being carried on by his wife Dame (and Dr.) Daphne Sheldrick include:

http://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/] http://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/  This link will then lead you to additional info about David and Daphne Sheldrick, the Orphans Project and the 'Keepers'.

I've missed a couple of morning drives; but nothing 'major' (Karula, cubs or ellies) seen.

I think I forgot to mention that while I was away a couple of new hyena cubs were born. One has been nicknamed 'Teddy' I don't know why. He is a cutie.

Tara has written or update her blog for 'Karula and her family' on Saseka at:
http://blog.wildearthsafari.tv/2011/09/karulas-family-tree-her-daughter-saseka.html

I re-looked at my folder for Tara's blogs about 'Karula and her family' and also re-checked on WE Blogs. I don't see one for Induna. I'll be bold and ask her.

You may recall I mentioned that the three drive folks would take two weeks off every 6 weeks. They will be away the first two weeks of October.

There was a Fireside Chat after the afternoon drive on Sept. 1, 2011. Eugene, the assistant manger at DPGR was on camera.

Left to right - Marc, Tara and Seb

Sept. 11 ~ Marc, Tara and Seb ~ FSC by BBE2009, on Flickr

They each gave a brief synopsis of how they became interested in wildlife and found there way to Djuma via WildEarth.  There was chat about all the leopard and lion sightings over the past 6 weeks. They ended by doing the 'Chicken Dance'. Tara on leave to England met up with some members in London. They asked that Marc do the dance again for all to see.

1. Their first two week break is approaching:

  • Last drive will be the afternoon one on Sept. 28.
  • The first when they are back will be the 'AM in the PM' on Oct. 13.

2. All posts from now on are to be placed on the FB page for Djuma Private Game Reserve (DPGR) at:
http://www.facebook.com/djuma.game.reserve?ref=ts&sk=wall

Tara is entranced by Karula's 'bundles of joy',  she has posted a blog about them:
http://blog.wildearthsafari.tv/2011/09/meet-xivindzi-and-xivambalana.html

I will add the blog to my post two above this one.
