Belo Monte Dam

Belo Monte would be a project bigger than the Panama Canal, flooding at least 400,000 acres of rainforest, displacing 40,000 indigenous and local people, and destroying the priceless habitats of countless unique species -- all to create power that could easily be generated through investments in energy efficiency.

Pressure on President Dilma against the dam is rising, the President of Brazil's Environmental Agency just resigned, refusing to issue Belo Monte a construction license and challenging strong political pressure to go forward with this disastrous project. Environmental specialists, indigenous leaders and civil society, agree that Belo Monte will be a massive environmental scar in the heart of the Amazon.

Construction could start next month - let's raise the pressure on President Dilma to stop this dam! Sign the petition now, before the bulldozers move in -- it will be delivered to Brasilia!

Raptorman,

Thank you for sharing this with us. The power and distruction caused by our thirst for electricity may be to the earth's peril. Every living creature is a part of the great wheel of life. This is scary.

Thanks for the link Raptorman; muchly appreciated & am forwarding to as many as I can.

Boodle - fyi I didn't have any problem signing the petition, but did experience a bit of difficulty in forwarding info etc. to friends & famiily.  It worked out in the end but was a bit of a fiddle - I wondered whether it was just the volume of signatories?

I'm glad you brought this up, Raptorman.  That country probably doesn't have a Natural Resources Defense Council, as we have in the U.S.  So any help we can provide would be good.

Thanks for signing the petition   :thumbsup

It's hard to believe that they would wipe out all those fish and other animals and displace the people and destroy the trees that help produce the very air that we breathe. It makes me angry  :gaah

There have already been some violent protests in Brazil. Hopefully if enough people sign the petition there won't be more violence and the 40,000 acres will be saved.

Thank you Raptorman.  I just signed the petition.  That whole project is enough to make such a huge disaster, it's hard to comprehend!   :eceek
