Nest # 16, 17, 18, 19 - 2010 season
« on: April 08, 2010, 09:23:27 AM »
This is the thread for posting fotos, videos & discussion of Nest # 16, 17, 18, 19.

This nest is on the north side of the island.
Last season i went around the island with Doug*s map & tried to find all the nests that i could to document them with my camera.
i went looking for all these four nests, & couldn*t find them.
Then i talked to Doug, & the neighbours of this nest, & i learned that this is actually just one pair of eagles that have built multiple nests.
i can hear this nest from the yard of a place i work every week, but i can*t see it from there.
There are neighbours of this nest that have a lovely view of the action from their deck!
They have followed this nest for years, & love the eagles very much.
So i paid them a visit one day & watched the action from their deck.
You can barely see the nest from their deck, as there is a big tree right in front of the view, but you can sure see the comings & goings & hear the sounds!
These neighbours had never seen this nest, for all that they watch it.
So of course i was determined i would get a foto of it!
i had to do a lot of bushwhacking & neck craning to find it.
It would just about appear & then another tree would block the view.
i finally found the nest & got a foto of it & the neighbours were just thrilled!
One day i want to have them tell all their eagle nest tales while i take notes.
They have so many interesting stories to tell.
Last year, this nest had two eaglets.

nest # 16,17,18,19 - august 6 2009 plus eaglet!

When i took this foto, the Mum or Dad had just brought food into the nest.
This eaglet had fledged, but the other one was still near the nest.
The eaglet was NOT going to miss out on the food!
Here he has just taken off from the perch branch behind him, & his landing gear is still down!  :heart

The determination on this one*s face to get at the food reminds me of a certain someone!  :mhihi

i was driving to work & spotted this eagle in a tree beside the road & across from the water.
i just pulled over & rolled down my window & photographed them from my van!
Maybe they are an adult from this nest, but who knows?
A nice looking adult, for sure.

Thank you booni!   :eclove  Your photos/information are always a welcome treat!  So many wonderful eagles on Hornby, maybe Hornby Island should be called Eagle Island!

i was working on wednesday near nest #16-19.
i heard calls coming from the area of the nest tree, so i wondered if these eagles were sitting on eggs?
Last year they raised two lovely eaglets, as you have read above.
But whenever i was outside, i saw eagles flying around.
i got out my camera before i left & managed to capture a few of them.
In this first foto, is a juvenile or an immature.
Perhaps from last year!
Notice how they are missing some wing feathers!
In the next foto, i believe i caught two young ones & one adult.
Again, possibly one parent & the two young from last year?
(Be sure to click on the foto in this post, then when the bigger one appears, click it again to see the eagle up closer.)

Here is one of the adults who was soaring around.
Notice one of their wing feathers is unzipped right to the shaft!

Here is an adult & one of the young ones again.
Notice this young one has some unzips on their right wing primaries.

Here*s a nice one, i*m thinking this is one of the juveniles from last year.
Notice the nicks in the right wing primaries.

Here there are two adults & one young one.
i wonder if the nest #16-19 pair have eggs this year?
Or are these other adults?

Today i was working near this nest.
At one point i heard an adult calling from the nest tree area.
As i watched, two adults flew over.
i took this to mean, again, no eaglets on the nest.
No one was chasing the third adult away.
Were they family?
But then i hear a familiar sound!
Screeping!
There is at eaglet in this nest!
The more i heard it, the more i realized that i was hearing more that one screep.
This nest has two eaglets!
i went to the house where i was able to watch the goings on at this nest last year.
From there, again, i could hear two eaglets screeping.
But the sounds weren*t coming from where the nest was last year!
It was coming from more to the right.
So, i went bush whacking with the woman of the house, & we found the bases of two potential trees.
Beautiful tree bases.
At the base of what i thought was likely the one, i found nary a poopshot.
So, i checked out the base of the second tree.
White poopshots everywhere, covering the leaves of the salal.
i also found a possum skull & a large fish jaw bone.
Apparently, the nest they are using now, they haven*t used for three years!
So these were nestovers from three years ago.
The whole time we were there, you could clearly hear two eaglets.
i went bushwhacking again by myself, to see if i could spot the nest.
This is a very densely forested area.
i couldn*t even tell which tree it was, never mind spot the nest.
But then i saw a clearing, with grass growing where the sun shone in.
The rest of the forest floor was dead needles & branches, crackly dry.
So i headed for the green spot, thinking if the sun came in there, maybe i would get a view out.
i spotted something that looked like a nest!
i got the binoculars on it & sure enough, i saw the edge of a nest.
But was it the nest that was being used, or another older unused nest.
Then twice i saw a wing flap!
So now i know where the nest is!
i*ll have to show wren.  :nod2

Booni, congratulations on locating the nest!  What a great sleuth!    :eclol

In all the kerfuffle, i forgot that i had something to report about Nest #16-19!!
i was nearby working on wednesday, & never heard a thing all day.
i went out into the yard after work with my camera, & just sat down then lay down in the grass, seeing if i could hear something.
i finally did!
An eaglet calling!
Then a second eaglet calling, one on top of the other!
i was glad to hear that these two were okay.
i talked with the Tree neighbours, & they said that that morning, early early, from their pillows, they had seen an eaglet landing in a tree that they could see from their bed.
So, it seems that at least one of these two eaglets has left the nest, & is trying out their wings!

Yesterday i ran into neighbours of this nest & they wanted to report on their eaglets!
In their words, they think the eaglets look SMALL this year.
They aren*t as noisy as they usually are, but they are flying really well.
i asked them to please keep an eye on them for me, & to call me if they see anything off.
wooohoooo!
