Shingle Spit Nest - 2018-2019 Season
« on: September 25, 2018, 07:52:52 PM »

The Shingle Spit Nest is very close to where you get off the ferry that arrives at Hornby Island when you come over from Denman.
The Nest is a bit hard to spot, but you can see the Eagles coming & going & perched in Trees near the ferry.
This is a beautiful spot, overlooking Shingle Spit, a really cool formation, the waters of Lambert Channel, which run between Hornby & Denman, Denman Island itself, & an almost never-ending spectacle of wildlife including Ducks, Great Blue Herons, Eagles of all ages, Orca & even Humpback Whales, as well as Cormorants, Black Oystercatchers, you name it.

Today i had my first sighting of an Eagle for this new season!
i haven*t seen an Eagle since back at the beginning of august or so, my last fotos of them go all the way back to the end of june!
Today we went for a walk on the bench trail, which overlooks Shingle Spit & the ferry & the view out to Denman & Vancouver Island.
We had seen a few Turkey Vultures flying past, but at one point we both said, hey, what was THAT!
A dark Bird with a large size & wingspan, but they weren*t a Turkey Vulture!
They made as though to land in a Tree top & spread their tail to do so, but then changed their mind.
The tail had the colour banding of a young Eagle!
My first sighting this season!
Then, on the drive home down Mount Road, i looked up & there was an adult Eagle circling with a Turkey Vulture!
So perhaps the Eagles are beginning to return!

Now cali & i are down at the ferry/Pub, looking for action.
We were walking out the wooden pier when this Great Blue Heron flew in & landed on this Tree!

Pretty sure they knew i was watching!
Lost track of where they went & what the heck they were up to in there in the shade.

We were aiming to get close to the Cormorants on the pier.
They didn*t seem to mind us tiptoeing closer.
There were also other people doing the same thing, that day.
