The poem for Sandy Patch and her son Xanseki is beautiful and appropriate for the troubles they have had. They are determined to carry on.

Not sure if this should be here or in "Season's Greetings" thread, but I will post here.

I was doing a little tidying up (:eceek) around the house a few minutes ago and came upon a pretty (and empty) red tin......

And it got me to thinking  :igetit

So I wrote a little poem about it........  :ecwink

A Lasting Gift

by luvthebirds
01-10-10

My loved one he did bring me
Some delicious Christmas treats
Cookies that looked quite lovely
Though just a few I planned to eat

I waited a few days to open
The cheery big red tin
For I fear I knew what might happen
If I dared to peek within

“Thirteen delicious flavors”
The words on the tin proclaimed
Well then, how not to taste them
To eat just one would be a shame

And the treats indeed were yummy
Though at first just a few I ate
And I ignored my tummy
When it warned of my mistake

For once the box was opened
It emptied very soon
And I’ll be wearing Christmas cookies
On my hips at least ‘til June

I was in the chat a bit ago and someone (ken_r, I believe) was taking down his Christmas tree.  Mine, as I am sure you might imagine, is still in the living room.

So that got me to thinking......

And I wrote a poem about it....

A Brilliant Idea

by luvthebirds
01-10-10

The presents are all put away
The cards all long been sent
The tree though still is standing
Although it has no scent

So should I start to take it down
I wonder to myself
I could do it right away
Had Santa just left me an elf

I barely got it finished
Was already Christmas Eve
So it seems so very rash
To tell it now to leave

So I’ll wait a little longer
Don’t want to rush too much
Little by little I’ll remove things
That shouldn’t be so tough

The thing that makes me worry
Is my pace is so slow I dread
That I won’t be finished before
Next years carols fill my head

Well, that gives me an idea
It’s brilliant and so clear
I’ll just leave the tree in place
And be early for next year

Cute poem luvthebirds, it does make me think about how each year time seems to go faster than the last and how I joke to people that I don't bother to put the Christmas decorations away any more.. well, I do pack them away into boxes, but I keep the boxes handy because no sooner have they been stored than it seems we need to bring them down again.  :eclold

This afternoon driving up to our house, we saw a deer lying in our street.  He did not get up when approached and we knew he was ill or injured.  Mr luvthebirds stayed with him while I telephoned for help.  The humane society came (within minutes!) and assessed the situation.  To be brief, the poor deer's neck was broken and he was not about to recover.  The humane society officer put the poor deer to sleep while my husband stayed with him.  The deer was one we recognized from the herd that we see often on our property.  He was easy to spot as he only sported one horn this year.  The chatters today who commiserated with me are so very special and I thank you so much.  And just now I wrote a little poem for One-Horn.  Sorry it doesn't have a humorous twist, but some things require a serious approach.   :sigh

Just One Deer:  In Remembrance of One-Horn

by luvthebirds
01-12-10

Today we lost one of the boys
From the herd that roams our hill
When I saw him last he seemed just fine
But today his world stood still

Seems some careless cad
Had inflicted an injury so complete
That when we came upon him
He lay suffering in the street

At least in his last moments
He was with his human friend
So when he passed from this life
He was not alone for its end

I wonder how someone could be
So cruel to cause him hurt and fear
But like too many others
Perhaps he thought “it’s just one deer”

So he went on about his day
No guilt to overcome
Not knowing the pain he caused
So his day could just go on

But to me each life has value
Be it bird or whale or bee
And while I mourn for our lost friend
At least from pain he is now free

And I know i will go on to see
More deer I have no fear
But I know I won’t forget One-Horn
For he was more than “just one deer”

And now, to lighten up the mood, I played with the first paragraph of my tree poem to make a little ditty for today.   ;)

My New Tenant?

The holidays have ended
The money has been well spent
Yet the Christmas tree’s been here so long
I think I should charge it rent

Luv, that is so sad about the deer.  You obviously live in a rural spot with nature and beauty around you.  I am always amazed at how some people have no regard for animals. How kind of Mr. Luv to stay with him.

Like your revised 'ditty' about the tree.

Luv, your poem about the deer was so clear and vivid, I felt as though I was watching it happen.  Thank you for sharing this difficult experience with us through your poignant poem.   :eccry

luv, your poem brings tears to my eyes.
It just encapsulates what is so awful, & so good, in the human species.
One horn was well loved & treated by you for sure.  :heart
What a hard thing for you to have to go thru.
wooohoooo!

We had to take our jigga to a car dealer today, and the closest is up the road a ways...  So we got to see a little scenery on the way... and we were lucky to see a great many vultures in and out of their stand of trees on a grassy, foggy hillside.... and I wanted to remember it so I wrote a poem...

Foggy Morning Vultures

by luvthebirds
01-14-10

On our drive this morning
The fog was thinning in the sun
But it still clung in misty clouds
To the hills we glanced upon

The turkey vultures were rising
We saw as we drove past
With the fog heavy all around them
They’d not be soaring fast

The fingers of the misty fog
Rose off the lush moist ground
The green grass was enveloped
While the vultures went around

Some of the birds began to soar
Several more stayed on the roost
While others waited for thermals
To give them a needed boost

Those still on the gum trees
Held their wings open wide to dry
Knowing it would likely be a while
Before they’d be prepared to fly

I was sorry that we could not stop
As we had to get on with our day
I hope the fog soon burned off
And let the vultures go on their way
