Sabi Sands Game Reserves: Gen. Info & References
« on: September 12, 2013, 03:53:27 PM »
General information related to the lodges, private game reserves etc. in the Sabi Sands area is scattered throughout the topics here. The information was written to help folks when we were privileged to watch WildEarth's (WE) Safari Drives from Djuma (Nov. 2009 - Nov. 2011).

'Sabi Sands' area, is part of the Greater Kruger National Park (KNP) in South Africa. Within this reserve are many 'reserves', lodges camps etc. which welcome guests and most provide two 'game drives' every day.

The first map shows the various 'sites' from which information is generated and posted on Facebook. The smaller map shows the lodges, reserves we receive most of the information from.  We don't see much news directly from Mala Mala on the extreme right.

The advent of Facebook and the start up of timelines and 'groups' has drawn mega folks to see and read about the wildlife of Africa. The lodges, reserves etc. and their safari guides know 'we' are watching and they do an excellent job of posting photos and answering questions; especially 'which leopard' or 'which lion coalition/pride' are we seeing.

In addition there are many knowledgeable and helpful viewers who have watched the WE drives from the initial start up in April 2007. Many of them have the leopards markings down pat and can name a leopard if needed.

As of late 2011 the animals now have a much larger conservation area. The reason is that the borders/boundaries have been dropped between the three countries of Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe. A large group of individuals (including Pete Le Roux of Mashatu Game Reserve) all with a major concern for conservation and preservation of African wildlife have spent about 15 years working with the regional and national governments of the countries to bring this about.

With open borders the animals are free to roam where they wish. While we think of the lions of the Styx and the Nkuhuma lions and Karula (our favourite female leopard) as usually being seen a lot at Djuma, we know they roam to and from other reserves.

The new area is called: "The Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area" (South Africa, Zimbabwe, and  Botswana). Commonly referred to as the 'TCA' (Transfrontier Conservation Area).  This video explains more about what has occurred and the benefits of it.

The main live camera (24/7) is located on the Djuma Private Game Reserve property at:
  • Djuma Waterhole Cam.
The camera is operated remotely by members of the group ' Djuma Djunkies' who are called 'zoomies'. They do an awesome job.
  • There is also the Africam; with live cams from Nkorho Bush Lodge, Elephant Plains, Tembe and Idube (from who FB does occasionally receive reports.

References:
1. These two are located in this board:
2. Related to specific species:
3. Blogs and photos from specific lodges / reserves include:
4. Facebook (FB): each of the above (and some I've not listed) have their own timeline. In addition there are groups you can 'Like' and also request to be a 'groupie' so you can post:
  • Karula & Family Photos.
  • Djuma Djunkies.
  • Nkorho Bush Lodge.
  • Lions of Sabi Sands.
  • Leopards of Sabi Sands.

Ask any  :question and hopefully there is an answer.

:ecsmile

I have made this new topic a 'sticky' for a couple of weeks. And I finally removed the sticky for Karula and Her New Family.

Mon. Sept. 16th - Heads up

Graham Wallington (WildEarth.tv) has posted a new blog Our new website and player go into beta.

Quote
Since WildEarth's current video player and website were launched in 2010, almost three years have passed and in Internet terms that is a very long time. Lots of new developments have happened since then, most notably the rapidly growing use of mobile devices for watching video and of social media for sharing content.

His team has started from scratch, and the beta version is out on the internet for a trial run. It can be found   HERE.

Advantages: to quote Graham include:
  • The new player works on both Flash and non-Flash systems which means you can also watch the videos on mobile devices such as iPhones, iPads and Android-based ones.
  • We also think you will be happy with the much improved  and more intuitive archiving and videomarking functions which now includes thumbnails for easy searching for events and a much easier way of creating videomarks.
  • A third major change is the ability to register on the site with either your e-mail or by linking one of your social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc) accounts and directly share news, videomarks, or other info directly with your Facebook, Twitter and other friends.

And lastly:
  • Over the coming months we will be streamlining and perfecting the site, as well as add more features to it. And, as always, we would like to ask for your help in this by letting us know your experiences with the beta site: What you like, what you don't like, and what is missing or not working as it should. It's important to us to build the best experience for you as our viewers and for that we need to hear from you.

  • For now we will keep the old sites and players running but we do plan to take them down in the not too distant future, so give the new site a try and let us know your thoughts by email to  'feedback@wildearth.tv'

Note: You will be required to register with a new name and password for this new site.

As I understand the news, the change will affect all the WildErath.TV cams including:

No wonder my hair is becoming greyer  :eclol

And no, I haven't figured out videomarks etc.  :ecrolleyes
