January 17, 2013

Life has been busy here, but this evening I have had a chance to read the grapevine on FB.

The questions are:
  • Has or hasn't Karula had her cubs ?
  • If she has had her cubs, she is already mating again - with Mvula.
  • Could it be that male Tingana who is Daddy-O ?
  • Or, might it have been Xivindzi who mvula was mating with?

My answer - I don't know.  :eclol

Cheetah Plains PGR (Private Game Reserve) posted this today (CAT)on their FB timeline:

January 22 eve. update re Karula

Well, confusion continues about Karula's activities  :eclol   According to Arathusa Safari Lodge's latest Rangers Diary two things are for sure, Karula:
  • Quote
Is displaying all the signs of having one or more cubs as she is heavy with milk and has suckle marks.
  • Has been seen yet again mating with the handsome young man 'Mvula'.

'la Diva' obviously has the cubs tucked away so they won't be found / seen until she is good and ready to let them be seen.

For all the news about sightings of Salayexe, Karula, Mvula, Saseka (Thandi) and Tingana (Shadow) check out the
Arathusa Safari Lodge's Rangers Diary for Jan. 13 - 19, 2013 HERE.

With many thanks to Elin of the 'Karula and Family Photos' group on FB, this her post with a quoted synopsis of Arathusa's latest diary.  :ty

Quote
Arathusa Safari Lodge, Ranger's Diary - Jan 13-19, 2013

Sunday: We managed to find one of our female leopards, Shadow, walking through the bush, scent-marking as she went. We followed her for some time, before she eventually started contact-calling. We were then greeted by an awesome sight as her two small cubs came scampering out of the bush to join her. We sat and watched as she groomed the cubs, before they settled down to suckle from her right next to the vehicle.

Monday: We did, however, find fresh tracks of a male and female leopard and discovered them mating in a thicket close by. As we drove onto the sighting, we identified the big, dominant male from the east, Mvula, with the female Karula. What is interesting is that Karula displays all the signs of having one or more cubs as she is heavy with milk and has suckle marks. We have no idea though where she is denning her offspring.

Tuesday: It was still raining this morning, but we managed to go out and found Thandi resting in a Marula tree.

Friday: After sundowners we found Mvula lying at one of the small dams, and were lucky enough to hear him give one loud territorial call.

What will happen next in Karula's life?  Stay tuned.  :eclove

After Arathusa posted the Rangers Diary (in my previous post) Elin contacted them to ask

Today (Jan. 24 NA time) she heard back from them. This is what she posted in FB' 'Karula and Family Photos"

Quote
Thurs. Jan. 24 Posted by Elin:

Response 6 hrs. ago from my question Tues asking if they can give us any clearer info on Karula. "Arathusa Safari Lodge On Karula, it was obvious when we saw her December that she had suckle marks so we concluded that she'd had her cubs. We haven't had a confirmed sighting of the cubs yet, since Karula has been extremely secretive and we've had few sightings of her due to the fact that we have very few vehicles driving around in the area in which she operates. Also with all the young males around, she is keeping a low profile. We believe she has not lost the cubs, but we cannot be 100% sure. Time will tell."

Very wisely Karula is keeping any cubs well hidden and keeping us on our toes.  :nod2

February 2 - Karula is being a tease  :eclol

Posted in the last few hours by Mika Hak on FB's group 'Leopards of Sabi Sands' a report from Nkorho Lodge:
Quote

from Nkorho:
31 January 2013
Evening
Our drive started off with a herd of elephants on our driveway busy feeding and the young ones playing around with great energy. We spent some time with the herd before moving on with our drive. Then one of the guides spotted a female leopard (Karula) resting next to one of the pans, then she got up and decided to move in to thick bush for us not to folllow. We had a lovely sundowners and made our way back to the lodge, suddenly we got impala alarm calling not too far from where we were. It was a male leopard (Lamula) busy moving through sent marking while he was on the move.

February 6

After the above report from Arathusa, Rosie Lam (an avid viewer of the drives etc.) must have messaged Arathusa re Karula and how she was looking. She has posted their reply:

Quote
A reply I had from Arathusa 6 hours ago :-
Arathusa Safari Lodge Rosie St Lam - Karula has been seen again - with obvious suckle marks. She has been elusive though, and since she is moving around a lot in wet areas, our access and sightings of her have been limited. Watch this space...when the bush dries up a bit, we may have more to report.

I have to be honest I was getting concerned as to whether the cubs were OK ?

Fingers crossed that perhaps we will see the cubs sooner than later.  :eclove

Thank you for the reports, BBE!  I have also been worried about whether Karula's cub(s) are okay.  If she still appears to be nursing, maybe all is well and she is just being a cautious mom.   :goodluck

BBE, in the Arathusa blog there was reference to a large leopard "Mvhula", as well as reference to Mvula.  Do you know if these are just two spellings of the name of one leopard; or is there indeed a Mvhula as well as Mvula?

Nice to hear that Xivambalana seems to be doing okay on his own.  Sounds like him to scurry away when the large elephant appeared.  :ecsmile   I sure wish there was news of Xivindzi....  Hope she is okay.

Hello Luv,

Welcome back, nice to 'see' you here. I have also noticed the spelling and from my understanding and reading about him his name is spelled 'Mvula'.  I guess sometimes the person writing the report /post is unsure of the correct spelling.  :ecwink

FB Timeline for Mvula states:
Quote
Mvula/Leadwood Male was born in Lion Sands to the Outcrop Female, sister to the Warthog Wallow female, in 2005. Sired by Tumbela. He is now carving out his own territory in the North/Northwest of the Sabi Sands.

Mvula, which means rain, was named after first being spotted in a tree during a heavy downpour in Elephant Plains traversing area.

Estimated to be about 5 yrs old - Dec. 2009.

Trying to keep Karula items together or even I won't find them   :ecwink

These two photos were posted today on Iren Juppa's FB page. She occasionally posted on the old Hancock forum's Africa section.

The two photos are of Karula in 2004 with her mother (blind in her right eye due to a fight) 'Safari'. They were taken in 2004 by someone known as Arnoud Quanjer.

What a beauty Karula was and still is.  :eclove

Hi Beth, good to see you here. Yes, those photos of Karula as a cub are beautiful.  Yes, Karula will be 9 years in mid March of this year.  Can you imagine being 8 years old with 8 children  :ohno

I have gone back through the pages of the Leopards topic and pulled out information pertaining to the births of Karula's litters.

2007:
  • Born in in early to mid-February.
  • Females.
  • Saseka (Thandi) meaning 'beautiful' and
  • Tingana (Shadow) meaning 'shy one'.
  • Karula allowed the rangers to see one of them on February 22.
  • Father was Mafufunyane.
  • 2011- Saseka and Tingana each have two cubs.
  • In most reports / blogs Tingana is referred to as Shadow; as there is a male leopard called Tingana.

2009:
  • On June 28 Karula's latest cubs made their debut on a WildEarth morning drive.
  • Mixo, meaning 'dawn' or 'elusive' and
  • Induna, meaning 'chief'.
  • Males.
  • Father is believed to be Yambilu-Jordaan.

2010:
  • On Nov. 23 WildEarth reported that Karula had given birth to her 3rd litter.
  • The cubs were first sighted on Jan. 27, 2011.
  • It took a few weeks before their sex was determined; so a delay in naming them.
  • A male named Xivambalana, meaning 'emerald spotted wood dove', on account of his shy nature, and
  • A female Xivindzi, meaning 'bold'.
  • Father is believed to have Yambilu-Jordaan.
  • As of Aug. 2012 Xivindzi has not been seen. On several occasions she would wander away from Karula and her brother. Karula would have to call home. Maybe this boldness lead her into a situation from which she couldn't extricate herself?  :ecsad

2012:
  • In the fall it was reported that Karula was pregnant.
  • In late December it was reported that Karula had given birth.
  • As I type this it has been reported that Karula has been seen mating with Mvula x 2, and while 'suckle marks' have been observed on Karula, no cubs have been seen. The speculation is that either the male Tingana or Mvula is the father of the litter (and most people are betting it is Mvula).

It reads as though Nkorho Bush Lodge Rangers have seen Karula and her two cubs  :eclove  This would be great news and photos (if they took any) have been requested.

This was posted today on their FB timeline as well as the FB group 'Karula & Family Photos' (which is wehere I have copied this from)

Quote
Nkorho Bush Lodge
‎11 February 2013
 Morning
We started off with a huge breeding herd of about 300buffalo just east of our lodge lying in a open area. We stayed with them for some time then got told that just after we had closed down the previous night a female leopard had killed a python and dragged it in the road. We decided to head that way and see if it wasnt in a tree somewhere hopefully still with the leopard. When we got to the area we saw where the struggle happened and some blood stains on the road. We then saw tracks for the female walking away and a short distance down the road coming back again but with tracks for 2tiny cubs. We believe these are for Karula with her cubs, its the 1st signs besides her suckle marks of them and hopefully someone will get to see them soon. Unfortunately there was no leopard of any size around. We then decided to head further west where they had found a female leopard and her cub playing around. On our way there though we picked up our own tracks for a female, male and 2cubs. We decided to follow them and after some time the males tracks parted from the female and cubs. We carried on a little further and found the female with her 2 3month old cubs walking down the road, we watched them stalking her and playing around and climbing up and down the trees it was awesome!! Great start to the day!!

Regards
 Nkorho Rangers

Fingers crossed.  :ecsmile
