We tried to sneak up on the Eagle, the net coming from the right side, from which she didn*t seem to be seeing.
i distracted her from the left side, creeping up closer with my capture towel, so that she was looking at me & not the person with the net coming from her right side.
i thought i got fotos all the way to the right eye, but i didn*t.
i fear the worst for that eye, as she seemed to not be seeing out that side at all, but we used that to our advantage to capture her.
She was perched quite low to the ground, but was still high enough up that the net couldn*t reach over her head.
It got her to jump down, though, to the beach, where we were able to catch her with the net & then wrap her with a towel & carry her out wrapped & with her head covered.
She is at MARS now, & let*s hope she can be helped!
Thank you to the person who called me about her!

Miigwetch booni...to you and your assistant Gregg for taking this eagle call.  What a mess that poor girl is.   If she has any chance at all....Your capture and getting her to MARS is the very best chance she has!!  Although the pictures are hard to see, I am grateful that you were able to document her injuries to better assist MARS with treatment.

Good work, booni!

Were you able to see any damage to her right eye? I hope MARS will keep you (us) posted on her condition.

Wow...poor thing. Sure seems like battle injury. I wonder how the other fared, if indeed that was a fight?  She seems to have blood on her beak and if she was hungry, perhaps not a recent meal, but results from the battle.

Thank you for being there for her Booni!  Sure hope MARS can help her.

awe, hate to see a bald eagle in that condition.  Thank you Booni for all that you do.  If she gets a chance to survive, she is certainly in the right place.

Last Saturday I went out on the water past the territories of Nests 21 and 22. Somewhere near the boundary of the two territories I saw a group of eagles on the beach. As I got closer I could see what they were interested in. Looked like a carcass on the beach.

There were about 12 eagles around this area.

In the little bay where I was drifting and taking photos was a strange-looking rock. As I drifted closer to it, it moved! It wasn't a rock, it was the elephant seal. I've been seeing this fellow on most of my outings in this area since late December. (See other pictures here.)

If you were to tip your head way back until your nose points to the ceiling, and look at the wall behind you that way, you would be looking at the wall the way this elephant seal is looking at me in this photo: upside-down. I guess it's the easiest way for him to look at me with both eyes.

Then he turned and looked at me sideways.

And then looked a me upside-down again.
12:23

Then he closed his eyes and I paddled on quietly, leaving him to his nap. When I returned an hour later, giving that little bay a wide berth this time, he was still at the same spot, hanging out in shallow water.

On the next headland were two more eagles, feathers blowing in the wind. Waiting for their turn at the carcass, or else resting from fishing. There simply are a lot of eagles around these days.

In my new kayak, Cali...  :ecsmile

Went out two days in a row, so I'll have more from that area soon.

I've also had the great good fortune of being invited to paddle two kinds of canoe in that area from time to time. The first elephant seal pictures were from one of those trips. I can hardly believe my luck.
