not direct, but related...

Madrona went to the Qualicum River area today and saw good signs of the herring spawn - see her post HERE

Sunday March 3 was a busy day - a "juvie" was seen flying near the nest more than once, and Mom chased more than once.  The herring spawn should soon move in, and that might make things even more tense.

Monday, March 4
There were several visits to the nest, with Dad bringing in a number of sticks, plus three or more silvery fish (herring?) as food gifts for Mom. Two matings, one on the His&Hers Tree where it seemed they fell off! and about 45 minutes later on the Peter's tree. A young visitor landed briefly on the Peters’ Tree. Dad brought at least 2 (maybe 3) food gifts for Mom - at least 3 herring (silvery fish, not too big)
• 7:48  Mating in the HH tree (they fell off)
• 8:26  Mating on Peters' tree.
• 8:54  Dad flies to the nest with a big branchy stick.
• 9:07  Both eagles flew to the nest, one came in from over the water; Mom ate
• 9:19 Mom flies to the nest; Dad arrived with 2 fish (herring)
• 1:31 Dark-headed visitor sitting on the Peters’ Tree
• 2:40 Dad brings a (herring) fish gift
• 3:00 Having eaten well today, Mom and Dad sat peacefully in the nest for several minutes

9:19  It looks like Dad had 2 fish - one in each foot! He drops one just as he lands and mom is quick to accept the gift

one fish?

two fish!

2:41 Mom gets another food gift

Tuesday, March 5

It appears the herring spawn has started on Hornby! At first light, we could see patches of pale turquoise water, and by later in the morning such patches were visible from Sandstone to Grassy Point.

Nancy, that is such great news. Thanks for the great pictures-I just love the one of Dad with 2 fish!

(Your entry could be followed up with a red fish and a blue fish if Dad is a Dr. Seuss fan!)

hmm, Fairie - remember one time Dad brought maybe 4-5 herring at once?  I think that was for Hope (2009) (I can picture the eaglet eating but am fuzzy on the actual date)

If you look at the you look a the videos for this morning starting HERE you can see just by the cover photos how interesting and beautiful it is this morning on Hornby.

But!  there were two visitors there! The younger one on the right flew off shortly after the cam found them, the older one stayed a bit longer.

I was thinking herring spawn near, mating near and eggs soon, when Mom was calling to Dad to bring food and he was bringing food gifts.

Dad is bracing up the nest edges in anticipation and feeding Mom. Excitement building for us all. :wub
