Description:  original design based on a traditional Bear’s Paw block, measurements 51” x 58”, machine pieced, machine appliquéd, professionally quilted on a long-arm machine.

The quilt represents a chapter in the life of Lily, a black bear whose life and adventures are being studied by the Wildlife Research Institute.

Lily was born in 2007 and is the grand-daughter of Shadow, matriarch of her clan, whose family tree can be found at www.bearstudy.org

In January 2010 we watched and listened via live cam as Lily gave birth in the den to her first cub, a female named Hope.  The sounds of the tiny cub nursing gave delight to many thousands of people who became attached to the little family.

After leaving the den in the Spring of 2010, when Hope was quite small, she became separated from Lily.  Attempts were made to reunite mother and cub, but meanwhile a special formula was devised to replicate the nutrition supplied by bear’s milk.  It was a joyous day when Lily and Hope were reunited.

Meanwhile, Lily became pregnant again, and when Lily and Hope denned for the winter, two cubs were born on January 21, 2011 – Faith and Jason.  This gave us the rare experience of observing a multi-generational den – and what a total delight it was!  Hope at this time was still nursing, and Lily had a busy time feeding her and the two cubs – at times very noisy.

As the two cubs grew, it was thrilling to watch the interaction of the family.  Hope took great care of her little siblings and loved to cuddle them and play with them, sometimes only reluctantly surrendering them back to Lily for nursing.

In April 2011, not long after emerging from the den, Jason was injured and, sadly, died from an infection.  In September 2011 Hope was shot by a hunter.

In the winter of 2011/2012 Lily and Faith denned together in a rock cavity.  May there be many more chapters to Lily’s story!
