i was asked to looked after a BIG DOG named Tank/Hank for three nights.
i just heard big dog & my brain fogged over.
What was i thinking?
Turned out he was fabulous.
But messy.
He had long hair so he brought half the garden in with him, every time he came in the house.
When you petted him, which was 24/7, according to his insistence, he drooled.
He also liked to sleep in the muddy wet creek...
i*d be like, where*s Tank?
We*d look & look, me thinking he*d escaped somehow, but then there he*d be, snoozing in the creek.
So my nice clean house quickly turned into a disaster.
& it smelled like a swamp.
But he was really fun & easy & i was sad to see him go.
i thought he might want to stay with me, but when his family showed up with the leash & said let*s go for a walk, he didn*t even look back at me...
Ah, well.
But it seemed he appreciated the accommodation, because he gave me a $50 gift certificate to one of the local nurseries!
What better gift could one think of, for me.
So, i*d been saving this, thinking it was perfectly timed to find something to plant Otto*s ashes with.
But nothing was jumping out at me.
Where the nursery is is kookoobananas with tons of extra people in the summer, & i avoided it whenever possible.
in september, when things were a bit quieter, i biked there to stock up the Natural History Center card stock in the shop.
On my way in i noticed Giant Calla Lilies.
i already have two plantings of Calla Lilies.
There is a place where they have gigantic ones, & i figured mine would get gigantic as the years went by.
But they haven*t.
Who knew there was such a thing as Giant Calla Lilies?
So i got three pots of them, thanks to Tank.
My garden fairy dug the holes for me, & added bone meal to them.
Later in the day, when i was alone, i battled the root bound plants out of their pots & surrounded them with used potting soil.
Then i sprinkled Otto*s ashes around them.
& covered it all in with more used potting soil.
This is all right next to my lovely Bird fountain, & close to my kitchen window, where i can see, & have Otto close, which he loved to be.
Two of the plants even have blooms coming up!

Nearby, in the fountain, is a potted Canna Lily.
i have never seen it bloom, but it was showing signs of blooming just as i was leaving for 12 days, darnit.
My neighbour minded my garden & Bird feeders while i was away, & i asked her to take a foto of the blooms for me.
Not the same as seeing them in person.
But now, like the Giant Callas, the Canna is blooming again!

Thank you for, booni, telling about your Calla Lilies and how you made a tribute to wonderful Otto.    :heart

Callas are one of my favorite flowers and I've seen them in pink and in white, but never that lovely orange!

What a lovely tribute. When I was reading about the big dog and his ways, I wondered about Otto. So glad that you were inspired to plant a Canna Lily. :hearts2

Tank was definitely a character, but Otto?  Now he was one special guy!  He loved macaroni and cheese and cheese and cheese and kibble!
A wonderful gift from Tanks mom and dad and a fantastic choice to honor your special friend.  I miss him, I miss you, and I miss Hornby❤
