FREEDOM FOR DECKER

Decker in the NIWRA flight pen

Decker, the Hornby eaglet, will be ready to be released in three or four weeks!

It has been a long road to recovery for Decker. He has grown new tail feathers to replace those missing when he was found in a malnourished condition on Hornby Island last August.

The Hornby Eagle Group Projects Society (HEGPS) is sponsoring this fundraiser in recognition of the long care that North Island Wildlife Recovery Association (NIWRA) has given Decker.

He will be released in the name of HEGPS and Friends. NIWRA would be happy to have any of us present when they free Decker. They will invite us to meet them at the chosen place, somewhere between the NIWRCentre and Hornby - but not on Hornby. They will choose a site that is within Decker's natural territory and a time when weather conditions are favourable for him. Food sources will be plentiful then and this year's babies out of the nest.

There are two ways to donate:

1) by donating directly to HEGPS at the Support page of our website - be sure to specify it is for Decker - http://www.hornbyeagles.com/support.htm (http://www.hornbyeagles.com/support.htm)

2) by purchasing a Decker print or other items with Decker on them at SmugMug. Information is here: SALE: "Decker" prints & merchandise

It all began with H.E.A.R.T. (http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/3300/loveki.gif) (http://img64.imageshack.us/i/loveki.gif/)
Please help us sponsor Decker's release to freedom!

Doug fed Decker salmon while he was stranded on the beach; boonibarb and winterwren captured him; he was transported by boat to Denman Island and then to MARS for the first stage of his rehabilitation. He was transferred to NIWRA in September.

The Hornby Eagle Advanced Rescue Team (HEART) did several rescues of fledgling eaglets last season and many came forward to help - Booni, WinterWren, caring residents, 'Enviro Mike" from Denman Island, Dan the tree climber, Jason, Sheila, and a wonderful helicopter pilot, Norman, who does rescues. What a great team!

You can read about these rescues in the Around Hornby Archives 2009-2010

DECKER IS READY TO GO!

He is in the company of other eagles in NIWRA's huge flight pen and waiting for this years' eaglets to fledge and settle down before joining them along the coast near his territory of Hornby Island. His release is now anticipated in about a month.

Robin Campbell and his Assistant Manager, Julie Mackey, are looking forward to this celebration of Decker's freedom. Robin says it will be a lot of fun and they are planning on taking video of the event.

We are looking forward to seeing Decker get his freedom at last!

The Freedom For Decker fundraiser has come to a successful conclusion. We are pleased to announce that $3,000 will be presented to North Island Wildlife Rescue Association (NIWRA) in appreciation of the long care they have given to Decker since September, 2010, getting him ready for release - also for the work they do with wildlife, in particular the continued care of other rescued eaglets from Hornby Island last year.

The combined total of $3,000 comes from direct donations to the fundraiser “Freedom For Decker”; from the sale of prints of Mary Jane Harman’s drawing of Decker; from an overflow of funds raised by Mishikeenhquay and her group to purchase a Bow Net and Ready Kit for the Hornby Eagle Advanced Rescue Team (HEART); and the balance from the Hornby Eagle Group Projects Society (HEGPS).

Thanks!  :eclove

When NIWRA has decided on a date and location for Decker's release, it will be announced here and elsewhere in the forum, including the News Banner at the top of each page. It is hoped that as many local members as possible of HEGPS and Our Nature Zone will attend. For those unable to attend, there will be photos and videos posted in the NIWRA topic (in Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation) so we can all rejoice in his freedom.

Blue, that's wonderful news about the $3,000 donation to NIWRA on Decker's behalf.  It was touch-and-go for him until he was rescued by our H.E.A.R.T. team and transferred to MARS for evaluation and care.

So many people were involved, including Booni, Wren, Doug, Sheila, Ajl, the people who transported him, and many more at NIWRA and elsewhere that we don't know.    :heart

(((((Contributors))))) made this possible and we have a great group of chatters, viewers and forum members!  The extra money raised above what was needed for H.E.A.R.T., by Mishi and her group, helped bring the total up and HEGPS added a generous donation, also!

Mary Jane deserves special thanks for drawing a lovely picture of Decker and donating the proceeds from the auction and print sales.

There always is a risk of leaving someone's name off when listing who was involved, and I hope that I haven't forgotten anyone...It wasn't intentional.

Great team work, everyone!

Not the least of all are those people who donated directly to the Freedom For Decker fundraiser. Your generosity will be gratefully received by NIWRA.

FREEDOM FOR DECKER

11:00 a.m., Friday, July 29th has been set for Decker's release.

"We plan to do this at the beach right across the hwy from the Union Bay store along the old Hwy 19. We will be there in our truck which is marked so people should find us. Robin knows this area well and feels it is the perfect site to let Decker free:).

Cheers,
Julie Mackey
NIWRA Assistant Manager"

We will make a presentation of our donation cheque and hope that many of us (and friends) will be able to attend this exciting release.

* Please remember that photos of people should not be taken without permission. (Decker won't mind, though.) This will make people more comfortable about attending.

I hope so too, auroradawn.  :ecsmile  Get an early ferry to Vancouver Island!

Union Bay is one of the oldest seaside communities in this area, along the scenic old Island Highway.

NIWRA has recently admitted two of this year's new fledglings to the flight pen so Decker will be an old pro in there, ready to go!

Darn - I will be in Vancouver.  I was so hoping to see Decker released. His rescue was so amazing and I got to see him at MARS where my daughter took those great photos showing his ragged feathers.

He has had the best of care and rehabbing and it is thrilling that he will be released soon.  I will be there in spirit.  Joyofdogs

If the weather doesn't cooperate for a picnic lunch, the Fanny Bay Inn is just 10 min south.

I'll be there with my camera whirring for MARS. I believe Maj is going, also. I'll try to be careful not to get people in the pictures or video, but please let me know if you see me whether you're okay with being on MARS' FB, anyway. And I will be asking, in any case.

I've never seen Decker in person so I'm really looking forward to this! Lunch at the FBI sounds good to me!

See you all there!

This long-awaited event is going to be so exciting! It looks like we will have good weather.

Just a reminder:
It is not OK to post photos of members anywhere on the internet without their permission. Most people won't mind if photos are taken at a reasonable distance. I will be making a presentation of our cheque and you have my permission to video that. Please clear all photos and videos with members before posting anywhere. Thanks in advance.

The Fanny Bay Inn sounds like a good place to meet afterwards to sit down and chat. I am looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones.

Thanks, Cawatcher.  :eclove

P.S. I will not have change so... it will be $20 for the 2009 and 2010 DVDs and $10 for the Helping Heart one.

Google Maps Directions says it is 1 hour and 21 minutes to get from Duke Point to Union Bay.

I will PM you my cellphone number and if you have a cellphone, you could call me when you leave the Inland Island Highway, turning right at Tsable Road to access the old Island Highway #19 and maybe we can wait for you. At least I can tell you what is happening.

They get fish in the flight cage Faerie & I believe vitamin type supplements too. Decker will be fed, pasisite free & in better health than most wild eagles.

Robin explained to me that different birds and different locations call for different ways to handle a release. He said that Decker was not the kind of eagle that you take out of the cage. He does what is best for the eagle.

I can understand that Blue, and I do trust in the people who spend so much effort and time with rehabilitation, but to see a young ealge held in the arms of a person, often at an awkward angle.. then flung into the air for take off, whether the eaglet was ready or not, seems wrong to me. Anyway, to know that a release took place is a matter of great joy.
