Title: Help keep the Hornby cam broadcasting!
Post by: NancyM on January 19, 2016, 07:54:31 PM
January 2016

Dad Hornby returned to his territory in September 2015 but despite our hopes Mom Hornby, whom we last saw on cam March 16, 2015, has not returned to join Dad. We are unsure of her fate, but if we don't see her again we will continue to rejoice in having known and learned from her. We witnessed the strong pair bond she and Dad shared and watched them through several years of breeding successes and sorrows. They have enthralled us, made us laugh, made us cry, and taught us much about eagles and nature.

HEGPS would like to continue to broadcast the Hornby Eagles Nest and Territory cam to see Dad's life journey continue without his longtime mate. Unfortunately, our current funds will allow us to broadcast only through the end of the 2016 season (September 30). Thanks to the generosity that Hornby Eagle fans displayed when we last held a fundraiser in 2013, we were able to fund the project well beyond our goal at that time, but those funds will soon be expended.

Our costs for one year currently run at least $5500, distributed between expenses directly related to the webcam and indirect expenses related to hosting the forum and website. Direct cam expenses are roughly $4000 (tree climbs and supplies for cleaning, insurance, technical support, telephone, and internet). Indirect expenses are about $1500 (website and forum web hosting, government registration fees, bank fees, post office box rental, postage, and miscellaneous supplies). This minimal amount does not include funding for any major repairs or potential replacement of the camera system, nor does it cover annual donations to local wildlife rehab facilities or expenses related to wildlife rescues carried out by HEART.

Please note that no member of HEGPS receives any remuneration for working on this project; it has been a labor of love for all of us.

If you have loved watching the Hornby Eagles, learning about nature, making new friends with a shared love of wildlife, and sharing the highs and lows of an eagle pair's lives, please help us to continue bringing the cam to you.  A donation of any amount is greatly appreciated. Please visit our Support page (http://www.hornbyeagles.com/support.htm) for information on making a donation by cheque or PayPal.

If we are not successful in fully funding an additional year of the broadcast, we have two alternate plans. One is to continue to maintain the Our Nature Zone forum, which we believe is an invaluable resource for information about eagles and other wildlife on Hornby Island, but the cam and website would be closed. If we cannot maintain even the forum (minimum costs are about $60/month), then the entire project would be ended and any remaining funds would be donated to the Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society (MARS).

Thank you for your support over the past several years and your continued interest in the Hornby Eagles.

I know how hard it is to keep it all. I'm sorry I could not help enough, due to the devaluation of money in Brazil. But I'll help. It is very sad to imagine that we are no longer here. In fact, I can not imagine how it will be life without the cam and chat Hornby.
I just have to thank HEGPS for everything you did. Thank you for showing me a new and wonderful world, wonderful people, wonderful friends.
Hornby know and everyone changed my life.
I will suffer much without all this, although we understand all the difficulty that exists.
I'm even without words.
I love, love all you  too and Hornby.

I've been sad about reality all day.....  I've decided if I can sell my painting of the Great Horned Owl that I painted for our local art exhibit, Animalscapes,  I will donate my earned percentage to the Hornby cam!  30% goes to the local arts council, if it sells during the exhibition, but if not and I can sell it to a bird lover, the amount going to the cam would be $850.  Some of you have seen the painting.... not sure it will post here......   There have been chatters who have expressed interest.... and if they know the $ will go to our cam, that will surely help! :-) :eclove :eclove

Mom & Dad Hornby ©boonibarb.

Do You Remember?
The first time you saw Mom or Dad Hornby on the internet?  How exciting it was to realize you were watching the eagles in real time?  How amazing it was to witness the eagles' activities and interactions?

Did You Know?
HEGPS cam operators volunteer their time to provide the views of Dad Hornby and the other eagles and wildlife in his territory.  But there are costs of over $5500 per year to maintain and operate the cam.  The cam is aging and may need to be replaced.

Can You Help?
HEGPS needs funding to keep the cam broadcast online.  If you want to continue to view the cam, and are able to do so, please donate HERE (http://www.hornbyeagles.com/support.htm).  Thank you!

I first saw Mom and Dad in April of 2009.  It was love at first sight!! :eclove  I got hooked! I smiled and cried along with so many others my first season with Mom and Dad.  I remember the trajedy with Echo, but also the success of the amazing Hope.  What an eaglet!  And boy, could she wrap Dad around her talons!  She was an eaglet who really knew how to use her voice...... SCREEP, SCREEP, SCREEP!! :chick

my first view of Mom and Dad was  around the  26th of March  2006,

there was very little organized public interaction , but quickly the group that  provided the
internet stream , set up a little forum and it began, people posted what they saw, ( is that blue in the corner, sky or water?,
and what they heard on the cam , ( grunty sounds , a hippo? no one person said they had heard hippos in Africa lol and that wasn't them)
other forums as well started sharing topics and chats started.
The people watching counted switches, when the parents took their turn to incubate.......
hundreds of people , from all over the world who had never seen such an event where glued to
their computers,  the cost of  streaming and the servers needed grew.  As one person lost their
connection to the stream, another watcher came out of the deep dark black  hole,
and the Circle Of Doom ,(the buffering symbol for  dreaded COD)   ruled  , refresh became the mantra .

Nightly news  and  news papers did stories on the eagles , the providers and the people who became
hooked on the eagles....
And  more people became aware of the need to  get involved in the world around them, have come
to know how to give aid to their wildlife,  even though they became  connected through a computer, never
having been able to see and be out in the wildlife areas

Love your recollections, Imp, of how this nest and these eagles have drawn so many to the world of Wild Birds and other wild life!!!  It is so amazing, how close we feel to these eagles after seeing close up on a nest how they lay eggs, hatch them, raise the little bobbleheads to be big gallant eagles!  Now with the whole territory to see,  our knowledge continues to grow! It's singular and fascinating!  Thank you to HEGPS!!  I'll do as much as I can to add to the fund and help keep this cam going!  :eclove

Learning a whole new language?  Watching the Hornby Eagles make “nestorations”, Dad Hornby “scootch” in the nest bowl, Mom Hornby protecting eaglets with her “Mumbrella”, Eaglet Hope “screeping” for food?  Please feel free to share your memories!

I have been trying to remember when I first saw Mom and Dad on Hornby and I think it was toward the middle of the Hope year.  I was a Sidney watcher and folks had been mentioning this Hornby nest in their chat so I decided to go take a look.  I peeked in on and off through that year and then started watching more the next spring when the egg was laid that became Phoenix.

I didn't chat at all (at either nest) but more and more reading the chat at Hornby kept me coming back.  I was learning there and absorbing everything I could learn and then going out and trying to find more and more information.  It became more than being entertained by a pair of eagles and an eaglet - it became a search for knowledge about eagles and the environment they live in.

I remained a lurker until Phoenix left us - I was bereft.  It was then that I opened up and decided to join with this group of people who showed how much they loved this young eagle who never had a chance to fly.  The rest is history.  I am continuing to learn and to become active in local enviromental issues.  In short, this nest truly did change the way I think and in some ways, my life.

Thank you all - we are making progress up the thermometer!

And I couldn't believe it when Hali took off to the right - holding my breath and hoping she could fly.  It was so unexpected - she had barely flown and fleaped around the nest and off she took.  What sheer joy for all of us to see her on what has become known as the Hali fledge branch.  In fact, it is the branch that Dad landed on last night on his way to his night perch on the babysitting tree.  When he landed I thought that is an odd place for him to land and then remembered Hali landing there on her first flight off the nest tree.  What a wonderful memory to have been recalled - thank you luvs!!

When Scootch fledged, took a misstep, and was away from the nest for three days?  How worried we were, then joyful when she was found and the cam operator showed her; safe and no worse for her adventures?  How well Scootch was being looked after by Mom Hornby?

Mom and Dad Hornby successfully fledged twenty-two eaglets in their years together on the nest they built in 1989!  Some years, there were no eggs, eggs did not hatch, or an eaglet died; but there were so many successes!  The OurNatureZone forum has a Reference Center for information on the Hornby Eagles at http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?board=26.0 (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?board=26.0)  It costs over $5500 per year to operate and maintain the cam and associated websites.

Just saw this and was glad to make a donation.  As far as I know, this is the oldest Bald Eagle cam.  I first saw it in March, 2006.  I can't remember who sent me the link!

Sunny,

Many thanks for you contributions and your question.  I am quoting part of the first post in this topic (you can read the whole thing if you click the link).  We had enough to carry us through October this year (2016) and thanks to generous donors, we will be able to extend for  a year beyond that (October 2017).  Time (and donors) will say if we keep going after that ...

January 2016

Great to see such a wonderful response to the appeal. One year I used the Hornby Eagles as a project at school. The children kept a diary of the happenings at the nest. There was much sadness at the passing of Phoenix. We all wrote how it made us feel and something we loved about the eaglet, then buried our messages under a big rock and left flowers. One young boy spent the next couple of weeks sitting up on the rock and thinking about her. The eagles have taught us all so much, bless them. I miss Ma and hope she is happy wherever she is, maybe with Phoenix. Thanx so much for all the wonderful pics and videos that you share across the world and big thanx to HEGPS for keeping the camera going. Long may it continue.  :ecsmile :ecsmile :ecsmileWhat wonderful people you all arexxxooo

Thank you for writing about your children and their experience with the Hornby Eagles. They have reached into the souls and hearts of so many. I hope that the children will carry all the good that they learned with them. Thank you also Gillie for being a wonderful teacher.

Gillie, we'd love to see examples of your students' work.  We have a place to share and you can make a page for your former/future classes here:

Thanks such a great idea. Unfortunately the children concerned have left primary school along with their eagle diaries but next year if Dad and Em return I think we will do the Eagle diary again. Hopefully there will be an egg :ecsmile
They will always remain in so many hearts.
