Title: Phipps Point nest - 2014-2015 season
Post by: winterwren on December 13, 2014, 01:10:16 PM
This thread is for discussion of the Phipps Point nest and its territory.

Phipps Point is the site of the old ferry ramp; it is now a quiet beach with a large intertidal zone, a good hunting territory for eagles. Phipps Point is also a very nice bird-watching area.

Last year this nest produced two healthy eaglets.

Click here (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1400.msg141063#msg141063) to see last year's postings about this nest.

Yesterday I stopped by to check this nest. We have had two big storms in a row and I'm checking my regular haunts to see how the nests have held up. This one seemed fine.

I went down to the beach to look for the eagles but did not find them.

Instead, I ran into this ferocious predator!  :heart

A Ruby-crowned Kinglet! With his crown shining bright! It's usually hidden under the green head feathers; this was the first time I had seen it. This little guy flew right at me. Turns out I had parked my truck in his hunting area.

He was fly-catching; I had never seen a kinglet do that. Fly-catching is when they launch from a perch, catch an insect in mid-flight, and then return to perch (not necessarily at the same spot). I had only seen kinglets glean for insects among vegetation.

Shortly after, he moved across the path and started gleaning among the brambles and grasses in the usual way.
We can still see his ruby crown here, partly tucked in.

Thanks Cali and Sandor!

Here are a few more photos of His Royal Highness. (I just can't resist.)

Still gleaning bugs from the grasses here.

Now he's back on top of the bramble pile, flycatching again.
It turns out that the way I used to draw birds when I was 5 years old was completely accurate! A roundish blob, eyes and a beak, stick legs.

This series is from back on November 1st. Another day when I didn't find any eagles at Phipps Point (they're around; just not when I come out with my camera). But found other birds.

A flock of Surf Scoters had been feeding in the shallows. I parked myself behind a log and eventually they started disregarding my presence and came in closer on the flood tide.
Among them, a surprise: three Black Scoters, with thinner bills and pale cheeks. These are either females or juveniles; I can't tell them apart. The Surf Scoter (also a female or juvenile) is the one with the big schnozz.

March 6... Still no herring spawn at Phipps Point either, but a handsome eagle perched on a tree up the hill...

I walked down to the water, and soon this eagle flew off his perch and moved closer to the water too.

I thought this was Mom Phipps, because I heard a low gulling call from time to time... But his mouth is closed! There is another eagle nearby, so this, I'm guessing, must be Dad Phipps.

Here's his mate. And this is either the top of the nest tree, or of one very near it. She gulled again while a youngster flew low over the beach. Dad held his peace.
This is the only shot I got where the branch isn't over her eye. Just!

On March 13, when I walked the beach back to Phipps Point after the observations posted here, (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1591.msg162338#msg162338) I noticed quite a few eagles resting around this territory also.
There were a few lined up every few hundred metres on the beach. Some perched here and there. A good bouquet of them in two trees near the old dock.

Meanwhile, on the rock pile at the end of the old dock, a Great Blue Heron is fishing.
He has nice new long head plumes, his bill is bright orangey-yellow and he's got a clear blue loral patch... Breeding regalia.

Catching up on not-so-fresh news...

May 8, 6:58 am... Eagle in the Phipps Point nest seems to be tending to someone.
(https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8827/17601773796_153ec3f765_z.jpg) (https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8827/17601773796_437ddd6a54_o.jpg)

There are a few poop shots on the nest rim, too.

Soon after, the eagle flew off and to a nearby perch. Then started making strange calls, like the reassuring huck-huck call but more strangled and with beak wide open.  I'm pretty sure I am the object of this particular displeasure, so a couple more photos and then I got out of their hair - um, feathers.

After that visit, I was only able to check this nest once, in late May. On that quick visit I saw an adult eagle nearby and that eagle was clearly unhappy with my presence so I made myself scarce without any other evidence of what was in the nest.

Around June 16 I got a call from a neighbour. She was concerned because she wasn't hearing anything from the nest and hadn't seen any eaglets yet. At that point the eaglets had not been clearly audible from the ground for very long, but nevertheless I decided to go check as soon as I could.

The occasion came 2 days ago, on June 20. I went to my favourite viewing spot and saw a beautiful eaglet standing tall!
One of the adults was perched right by the nest. This time they didn't seem nervous like they'd been last time. Still, I only stayed long enough for a few quick photos.
This nest usually has twins; last year I didn't see the second eaglet until both were branching. So there could still be some surprises at this nest.
