Title: WE Game Drives Are Back - Nov. 2, 2014 - ?? 2015
Post by: BBE on October 19, 2014, 11:09:06 AM
Hi there,

I have since April been keeping an eye on Karula (the female leopard) and her growing family (now has grand-babies) from our time with WildEarth and game drives.

There has been talk about a new set of drives, with two vehicles ('Jigga' refurbished and a new Land Rover 'Wendy') and oodles of guessing as to the site and who the presenters etc.  We do that Jigga and Wendy will be there today.

Graham Wallington has been posting a lot of 'teasers'.   One of which we would have a chance to see Karula, and some of her large family.  A few of us are betting on Arathusa Reserve??

Stayed tune to this spot as on Monday. Oct. 20 there will be an announcement as to when, where, and who.  I'll have to find more time in my busy schedule to watch sometimes.

Back home, again!  A beautiful day here and even more beautiful with the following post about 6 hours CAT (Central African Time - 9 hours ahead of PT).

Posting was on FB on WildEarth.TV at https://www.facebook.com/WildEarth.TV?ref=br_rs (https://www.facebook.com/WildEarth.TV?ref=br_rs)    It is my understanding that this is where posts re drives will be.

From WildEarth.TV Oct. 20 p.m. CAT   :yeah
Quote
Jigga and Wendy are ready for the journey to their natural home: the bush. Tomorrow they will travel there with Graham and Peter to start the on-site preparations. Those whose guessed Djuma and Arathusa were right, the drives will come from those properties, starting in early November.

Pete (Braat)will also replace the Djuma cam with a new one and another one will be installed at the dam in Arathusa.

 Watch this space...

Once Peter B. has cam fixed at Djuma waterhole - this is the link to it:
 http://beta.wildearth.tv/cam/djuma-waterhole (http://beta.wildearth.tv/cam/djuma-waterhole)

Wow - both Djuma and Arathusa (they do overlap) and I guessed Arathusa (as someone posted somewhere0 drives likely in north east Sabi Sands.  Djuma waterhole cam has been down for several days now.

I will try between now and then to sort my pics since April and post updated pics and news re Karula and family.

 :hooray  :biggrin3

Hi MaggiesMom,

I had forgotten you were in Africa in April.  Would love to see your videos.

Yes, 'Thandi' (Saseka) is the mother of two cubs from her latest litter. I need to check the date.  They are both doing well.
You may recall that her daughter from previous litter was killed by one of the Styx pride. 'Bahuti' the male cub survived and is one handsome and big male leopard.

Also 'Shadow' (female Tingana) had a new litter around the same time as Thandi and so far so good.  I believe I am correct in saying that the cubs from her first litter did not survive.

My mind has not retained all the information so some major searching is needed.

Cheers  :ecsmile

P.S. I almost typed your first name in my greeting.  Would you prefer to remain as MaggiesMom here?

MaggiesMom,  thanks for your post. You have had an extremely busy, emotional year and now a drive across the country. Good luck on the drive.

Photos from Africa will be welcome whenever you have the inclination and time to post.

Earlier today I was checking the assorted groups I belong to on FB. The leopards are all moving around Sabi Sands !

Does anyone here subscribe to National Geographic Wild ??  Narrated by a Pieter Pretorius who was born and raised in Namibia. 'Our' Pieter fits that description. Would be great.

A few minutes later:
Yes it is 'our' Pieter. I think Nat. Geo beat Graham Wallington in letting 'the cat out of the bag' re the new drives. Read to the end of the article above to see info:

First drive for WE and we are live with Pieter. He looks great.  Rumour that Pieter and Leischen had a son a few weeks ago is true.  On his FB page he apparently on his FB page said he now 'has a lion - Ragnar-Ngala'.  Ngala is Shangaan for 'lion' and Ragnar is Swedish and means 'strong counsellor' or 'strong army'.

We did see Hayden (driving the other vehicle) on Arathusa. Like Pieter, Hayden has extensive experience.

Two teams per drive, one :

A quick view of a hyena. And then more at the den. Seb would have been in 'Hyena heaven'.
I missed getting a photo of them and an ellie or two.

Hayden is a wildlife expert who reports from some of the wildest and most scenic places on earth. He has worked and traveled throughout the world, filming across the African continent and in more than 35 other countries. Hayden is known for his private safaris, exclusive escapes and expeditions throughout Africa, Asia, Australia and the Middle East. Hayden's philosophy is that the most effective approach to conservation is through education, technology and inspiring people to care for the planet, coupled with understanding people's different perceptions of wildlife.

Great to back on Sabi Sands  :biggrin3  Some glitches which will be worked out - some stop and start of feed, and presenters were hard to hear at times.

Hi Tigerlady, nice to see you here.

I have only just checked in on both links and both have some buffering etc.  I am using the National Geographic WILD link at  http://www.wildsafarilive.com/ (http://www.wildsafarilive.com/) some buffering on it and the WildEarth one too.

When you use the Nat. Geo. link click on 'Live Drive'.

Hope this helps?  :ecsmile

Nov. 3 Morning drive had started by the time I arrived on the scene. Some buffering of stream, but volume of presenters voice is improved..

Pieter and Hayden both driving on Djuma. Hayden needs a hat; he is already balding on the back of his head.

Big excitement when a leopard was spotted. It was 'Quarantine Male' (so called as he was born in Quarantine area of Djuma). Also referred to ass 'Q-Male'. He is one of Karula's two boys from her 4th litter. Born late November - early December 2012.  He is starting to figure out where he should make his turf. He has a Facebook page at:
https://www.facebook.com/Quarantine.Male.Leopard/info (https://www.facebook.com/Quarantine.Male.Leopard/info)

His littermate is known as 'Kunyuma' (who is not seen very often).

When I first saw Q-Male stalking through the brush and cam was stuttering.

Then we had some dreaded black screen (at least I did) and just a few minutes ago when I finally came back, Q-Male was resting.

Nov. 3 PM (CAT) drive with Pieter and Hayden found them on Arathusa. I was unable to be duct-taped onto one of vehicles! Things to do and places to go.     :eclol  Hayden was ecstatic about see a pride of lions.

Hayden has his own Wikipedia page at   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayden_Turner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayden_Turner)

Pieter and Hayden set to head out on drive.

From what I have read there was a fair amount of stop and go. They did come across a 13 member pride of lions. They had obviously made a kill as they were stretched out and sleeping with full bellies. 4 adults and 9 younger ones. They were the Breakaway Pride from the Tsalala pride. I wonder if they are the group who was renamed in Aug. 2013 as the 'Mhangeni (Taslala/Breakaway) Pride'?

Tues. Nov. 4 Afternoon Drive

Lucky the rain appears to have lessened, but some power outages. Muddy roads. I wasn't here for entire drive.

Blacked-bellied Koorhan was seen. As were a moderate sized breeding herd of ellies which pleased Hayden- before he lost power. Viewers switched to Djuma Waterhole cam to see them. Beautiful sunset

Nov. 5 Morning drive.

Pieter is in Jigga on Arathusa and 'HT' (as Hayden is known; last name is Turner) is on Djuma.

Pieter found a small breeding herd of ellies at red Dam, which is on Arathusa. One ellie appeared to be wearing a collar (usually used for tracking purposes)

Feed was bad, and then went off. I was tired and started for bed.

Nov. 5 Morning Drive: Part 2

Cam back up and we from HT that there was a leopard on Djuma. Needless to say Pieter went and joined him.

Yes, indeed a female leopard.   HT, Pieter (and many, many viewers) could hardly contain their excitement.

:hooray :woohoo2  the Lady of Djuma in person. Karula hasn't been there for sometime now.

The following all happened about 30 minutes from the end of the drive - but true to form Pieter said we'd stay to watch as Karula was stalking a meal.

She rubbed a tree and kept coming down the path. She stopped and was looking very intently at? Karula was to Pieter's right and a few metres to his left were some Nyala (ladies I think). K. started to stalk and stop,, then inch closer and stop x 3 in total. Then the Nyala sensed something was wrong and started barking. Karula decided to give up for now and sauntered away.

Here comes Karula
(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3937/15530022438_9cf97d88e8.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/pEkqBy) (https://flic.kr/p/pEkqBy)

Looking very intense - she had spotted the Nyala
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7572/15530022498_2a9e883267.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/pEkqCA) (https://flic.kr/p/pEkqCA)

Stalking closer to prey.
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7569/15530022558_c9d865836c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/pEkqDC) (https://flic.kr/p/pEkqDC)

And a little closer

Nyala spooked, (perhaps by Pieter moving the Jigga) and started barking and Karula moved off.

And an ecstatic Pieter waxes poetic about his time with his favourite leopard and says good bye until the afternoon drive. I am sure one of them may be out before the afternoon drive to see if Karula is still around.

(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7560/15530022578_5ab823c981.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/pEkqDY) (https://flic.kr/p/pEkqDY)

And I was going to go to bed early and sleep in until about 9 a.m.  1;16 a.m. but I will set the alarm for afternoon drive.

What a wonderful drive with Karula. Bush drums must have told her to go to Djuma.  :heart  :eclove

Hello, life has been a tad hectic the past week; as I have added two game drives to my daily viewing.

We have continued to have excellent sightings and hopefully more leopard sightings to come. We did have one drive which was emotional and draining for Pieter and HT as well as those of us watching. Wild Dogs/Painted Dogs (WD) have been around Djuma. Two or three drives ago two of WD pups were intently watching something. Turned out to be a pregnant impala and she was swimming trying to escape them. The impala was becoming more and more tired and while she would get close to shore the dogs were there. She did her best to get on shore and leave. But the pups had other ideas. One went to fetch the 2 adults and other 4 pups. As you can guess the outcome was not what we would have hoped for.

We have seen magnificent Mvula, and yesterday Tingana (Shadow) was seen under a tree in a gulley. A guide from Arathusa who came by that they have seen her now almost 3 month old cubs, but not out in the open. We hope she will bring them to us?  Then we need her twin sister, Saseka (Thandi) who also has cubs, who have been seen elsewhere, and the male Bahuti and Xivambalana.

Ellies and babies, impalas and babies, Giraffes, Cape Buffalos, Zebra and some of the birds have also been seen.

As you know I love the drives, but find I am finding watching two a day difficult. Life is busy here at 'The Maples'.  I have to also acknowledge that once I sort, choose, resize, upload pics to Flickr and then post them here with a narrative is taking too much of my time. Also the eyes don't like all that computer time.

I wish to make my life easier and am opting to post links to videos being done by three people. They are a combo of full drive, part of a drive etc. They are very good at what they. Also a few 'Video marks', from the WE cam site.

The links to the YouTube page for three people are:
And - - - - - I haven't forgotten about my post of other leopards we may see. I have been scrounging up photos for the post.  :biggrin3

Thank you Ann

While we didn't see her 2 cubs; they are about 2.5 - 3 months and have been seen by the Rangers. Sadly she didn't move from that spot, and we didn't see her cubs.

The 10 AM drive was difficult for me... I saw the sweet baby before the wild dog came and then had to turn away... It's one think to watch predators eat prey they already had brought down before-hand and it's different (for me) to watch it happen.   :eccry

I know it's part of the circle of life....but...

The dating under each picture is year/month/day. I think the time is the time elapsed since drive started.?

Nov. 11, 2014  AM drive

Two videos for this drive.

Part 1 = Hippo. Nyala, and Ellis.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElSUHypUGuw

Part 2 = Giraffe(s) and two beautiful male lions.  Taxon from Arathusa told HT they were the Styx. So HT kept referring to them as such.

People on the Lions of Sabi Sands (LoSS)FB page (and they know their lions) said they were two of Birmingham Male Coalition (there are 3). They obviously had had a 'contretemps' with other lions or ?, as face scratched and one had some hair missing.

They have been working their way down from Manyeleti (north of Sabi Sands)to Sabi Sands. A few days ago they had met up with Selati Males and had a minor tussle.

The LoSS group sent emails and Tweets to both HT and Pieter. But Pieter wasn't responding.

The long and the short it = Birmingham Males (2) confirmed on the next drive.

They are beautiful/handsome lions for sure.  Enjoy.

From Nov. 12 a video of Karula walking about. The big debate has she had another (5th) litter or not. She is certainly looking slimmer than a about two month ago and one avid fan of hers has indicated she does see teats in this video.
The answer - will be if / when she shows off cubs sooner than later??

The drives have been not so good since my last post due to sound, picture issues and rain!  Right now it seems that the server is down in London, UK.  None of the African WE cams are working.

As National Geographic is tied up in this venture, I am sure they are not amused.

Just heard that the power is off on some of the underground in London.  That is serious as it is ciurrently the morning commute.

I am posting some photos from drives that occurred, partially occurred.

Nov. 15. AM drive Found us with several of the Nkuhuma Lion Pride. They had brought down a buffalo for a meal.

Nov. 16 PM drive cancelled due to rain. But before that happened Pieter chatted to us: about the drives and Karula and her Mother Safari.

Pieter's face just lights up when he talks about Karula

Nov. 17 AM drive - Hyenas and a steenbok - before the rain cancelled the drive.

The buffalo carcass - all bone and no flesh was still lying about. It was visited by two adult and one hyena pup

Kunyuma is the twin brother to Quarantine Male - now almost 2 years old. They are the two boys from Karula's 4th and most recent litter.  Kunyuma is very shy, so seldom seen.  He was around Djuma Waterhole this time.  Before or after the drive his brother was also seen.

Stay tuned for more of Kunyuma

Nov. 18 AM drive

There was considerable starting and stopping of the feed and the same with the sound. The drive was cancelled after about an hour. We were informed that a serve was down in London, UK (as well as London having power outage during their morning commute).

Before losing the drive totally, we were lucky to have brief glimpses of Kunyuma in a tree.

Nov. 18 PM drive

I didn't get on the drive until almost 90 minutes after it started. I gather not too much was seen.  Then WOW - HT had a call from Pieter on Djuma and cam switched to Pieter.

There was the leopard Kunyuma; no longer shy. He walked about, then up into a tree for a few minutes and back down and with only his tail tip showing off he went into the bush.

About 6 minutes later Pieter found him again and we had an encore performance - up and own a tree and fade to black as drive time up.

I am heading out and won't be back to computer until late. Please be patient to see photos, as it might not be for a day. OR look for video on YouTube or on the drive videomarks.

I so wish we could load pics here as we can on Facebook - click on camera icon and it goes to your photos.

Nov. 20 AM Drive

Wow, awesome, incredible.

We watched two Wildebeests give birth to a calf within minutes of each other.  :heart  As with other animals here they have their offspring up on their feet, ealking, mini jumps and suckling within half an hour or less.

Too many photos - so here is the video from the drive.

Pieter and HT named the calves 'Wium' and 'Brian' after their cameramen.

Enjoy

A couple of days ago, Pieter saw Karula in the Quarantine area of Djuma.  She was going deep into the bush. She is pregnant and Pieter guessed that a litter is very imminent. This is the area were she had Quarantine Male and Kunyuma.

It would lovely if Pieter was able to see the cubs before he leaves on Dec. 7th.

I watched the "Big Cats," live on National Geographic Wild, featuring Sabi Sands with Pieter and Scott this morning (at 6 a.m. PST).  The Birmingham Boys (Flat Cats) and a male leopard made it a good drive!

The Safaris at Arathusa and Djuma will be on that channel for both drives for a week, according to the schedule.

Hi Tigerlady,

I hope you enjoyed watching Big Cat Week on National Geographic Wild TV. Unfortunately I don't get that channel, but reports are that the viewing was great.

That drive was awesome.

I moved your post into this topic (from 'Nov. 2014 Update on Karula, Her Family & Other Leopards.')

The drives with Pieter and Hayden (HT) ended on Dec. 7. Marc and Scott are now doing the drives.

Please accept my apologies as I have been unable to maintain this topic or making a post related to the other leopards we now see or read about.

To those who pass this way, I wish you a Merry Christmas / Happy Holiday and all the best lfor a happy and healthy 2015.

Hi Ann and other friends.  The safari drives are still on twice each day.  The guides right now are Marc (an excellent 'friend' from the old drives) and Scott, new to WildEarth, but experienced as a guide.  Alex gives the two guides a day off, as needed.  Otherwise he's the director in 'Final Control' and tries to keep the live stream going.

This is the rainy season in South Africa, so sometimes they have a talk with Q&A instead of getting the cameras wet.

The morning drive yesterday featured a beautiful young leopard, known as the Quarantine Male because he was born in that area of the Sabi Sands reserve,  He's one of Karula's sons. She's a favorite of regular watchers but she has new cubs and is hiding them for a number of weeks until she thinks they are ready to be out and about with her as she teaches them how to be leopards.    :eclove

Very sad news to share with you all.  On the Dec. 31st morning (in Africa) drive we found Karula.  We were so elated.  She led up to her tiny, tiny cub!  But tragegy struck when two hyenas showed up.  Karula did her best to fight them off (and she got in a good swipe on one), but was not able to save her cub, which was taken away by a hyena.  Karula seemed stunned.  We were all heartbroken.  From joy to grief in just moments. We stayed with Karula while she sat where her cub had been.  Latest report is that she has moved from that spot as her tracks were found leading away from there.  Thankfully, Karula did not appeared to be physically injured.

Here are two things I wrote today for Karula and her cub:

In an Instant
(A Tribute To Karula’s Tiny Cub)

We saw the tiny leopard cub
For only a short while
A quick glimpse of the young cat
Brought to our faces smiles

The cub was a beauty to be sure
Like its mother we hold dear
We were delighted to be with them
As we bid goodbye to another year

We let our dreams begin to shape
Imagining watching the cub grow
Enjoying her playing and thriving
Karula’s cub, we would get to know

Alas, the dreams were not to be
They shattered oh so quickly
The hyenas came upon the scene
And we now were feeling sickly

Please NO, do not harm the cub!
Or its mother we so adored
But the hyenas paid us no mind
They were on a mission we abhorred

In an instant the tiny cub was gone
Despite its mother’s brave fight
Hyenas took the sweet young cub
It won’t live to see another night

As the reality began to set in
We could not ease our grief
Karula too, seem stunned
We sat with her in disbelief

Yes, Nature can be cruel
We know that to be a fact
But to witness it at times
Truly sets one’s self aback

Karula, we’ll be with you
In our hearts as you move on
Glad we shared a special moment
With you and your cub, now gone

Dear little cub, you won’t be forgotten
For the brief joy you brought us all
We’ll see you safe in our memories
And in rainbows, after the rain falls

The Leopard Waits
(Karula’s Lament)

The leopard sits in a small depression in front of a fallen Marula tree.

If you just happened upon her, you would be awed by her beauty, her magnificent facial markings, which on closer look describe your first impression, “WoW”!

You might be taken by her calm demeanor, she is, after all, called “Karula”, which means “peaceful” in her area of South Africa.

You might wonder, “For what is she searching as she sits and stares ahead?”  Yes, you might wonder, but those of us who have been with her today know.

We who love her and feel joy in her presence know there is something different in her gaze today.  We know for what she searches.

We had come to see her tiny, blue-eyed cub; for but a moment or two.  We took in the scene, the striking mother leopard and her young cub, and rejoiced.  This was just what we had been longing to witness.

We watched the two of them, oblivious to the danger that was to come; we smiled and shed a few tears of pure joy.

Our reverie was broken as the scene rapidly changed. The mother leopard was suddenly alert and the cub out of our sight. Then we saw the hyenas.  We held our breath and our hearts raced, dreading what might happen.

Karula courageously tried to fight off the pair of hyenas and save her cub. She snarled; she used the fallen Marula to launch an attack from above, getting in a swipe at one hyena.

There is only so much one brave leopard mother can do to protect her cub from determined predators.  The hyenas took the cub, leaving us, and Karula, absolutely stunned.

Karlua continues to sit and wait for her cub, though she knows, deep in her very heart and soul, it will not return.  We share her grief, her shock, her knowing.

There is nothing that will turn back time or change what has happened. So we simply sit and wait with her.

We sit with you Karula, and silently wish you well through our tears; hoping you can feel our love from all parts of the globe.  We sit and wait with you, it is all we can do.

Karula will eventually move on, as so will we; that is what we humans and other animals do.  Yet we will not forget the beautiful young cub who is gone way too soon, nor the mother leopard who sits and waits.

Sad news today from the morning game drive. Just before the drive Marc announced that Karula had been seen. He and Scott did find her with a cub by an old Marula tree. The cub was playing.  In the blink of an eye two hyenas appeared and while Karula put up a fight they made away with her cub.

WildEarth.TV posted on their FB site:
Quote
As we follow Karula we catch a first glimpse of one cub. Only minutes later disaster strikes as two hyaenas appear and manage to chase Karula up a log and grab her cub. No graphic footage, but very sad event.
http://wildearth.tv/videomark/karulas-cub-found-and-lost (http://wildearth.tv/videomark/karulas-cub-found-and-lost)
wildearth.tv

From reading the posts etc. on Facebook Karula was stunned and sat by the Marula branch for about 20 or more minutes before moving away.

Since Karula gave birth to this her 5th litter (maybe 2 months ago) it is the first time anyone including rangers / guides that a cub has been seen. She has always been extremely protective of her litters and has carefully 'stashed' the cubs well away from predators / preying eyes.  She has usually brought one cub to a site, but the other one remained hidden until she called for it to appear.

Many are asking the questions (1) did she have one or two cubs in this litter? and (2) if two is the other one alive and safe?

At this point Karula has done a remarkable job as a Mother in keeping her cubs safe and raising 8 or 9 of her 10 offspring to adulthood. I say '8 or 9' as we do not know what happened to Xivindzi (sister to Xivambalana, who is a handsome male and seen frequently usually around Nkorho or Arathusa).  There have been rumours that Xivindzi is in Kruger National Park and seldom seen. ??

Time will tell whether Karula still has a cub to raise.

A sad day for all those who have watched Karula since the first WE drive way and where privileged to see her first litter 10 almost 11 years ago.

This is the link to a post by 'LuvtheBirds' (one of our long time viewers) who must have seen the event unfold which includes two haikus / poems which she wrote today. Here are two things I wrote today for Karula and her cub:

Luvthebirds,

Thank you for your post and the words you wrote for Karula. I sit here with misty eyes as I re-read them.

You obviously watched the event unfold?  A heart-breaking moment for Karula and all who have watched and loved her for so many years. I did not see the drive.  :ecsad

Thank you Luvthebirds, for beautifully telling this tragic, true story about what many of us saw happen...first in delight to see the tiny new cub for the first time, and then suddenly with no warning, in horror.  Karula put herself in danger to try to stop them, but one mother leopard is no match against two hyenas.

Karula has never lost a cub before now, although Mixo did lose the white tip of his tail to a hyena while we watched a number of years ago.

It's still hard to think about the newest cub...but it was shared with many kind online friends, which helped many of us to try to sort out what just had happened.  It was comforting to be in a chat room with other wild animal lovers who also were stunned and who wanted to talk about their feelings with one another.

(((Hugs))) to all who love animals...

Yes, BBE, I was on the drive.  Thank you for your words, Tiger and BBE.

The sadness continues, Karula has returned to where her cub was taken and has been calling and searching.  :eccry   This is happening now on the drive and my heart is truly breaking.  I feel for her so deeply right now.  I know things like this happen, but watching Karula in her heartache is an awful lot to take.    :ecsad

Hello Linused,

Were you watching the first drive for 2015 (CAT)? I was at the Residence's NY Eve do until about 9:45  p.m. and then on the drive with Scott until the end.

Dear sweet Karula was up in the tree looking all about, sawing and calling for her cub. Then she ventured down, walked around the area one last time (quite close to Scott at one point) and headed back to a tree (I think the original event one). She looked as if she might go up it but settled down under it and was grooming as we left her at the end of the drive.

To me she does look tired and sad. I wonder if there is another cub tucked away safely or if she only had one cub in this litter. Time will tell.

Misty-eyed soul that I am, I also feel extremely privileged to have seen the past hour of the drive and watch her.

Off to Flickr to upload and post some photos.

Ann  :eccry

Good news now.  Karula spent a lot of time in an old Marula tree and our safari guide stayed there so we could watch her most of the drive time.   She frequently did the vocalization known as 'sawing' because that's what it sounds like.  I've never heard her make those sounds before...

I took many screen caps and will post a few here soon.   :nod2

Hi Tigerlady,

Thank you for your kind words. I hadn't seen your post on the Karula topic before I posted my photos on the drive topic.

It has been a real treat to see Karula on these drives.  I haven't missed seeing her as much as others, as I do read about and see photos of her when she has been spotted.  I belong to a group on Facebook 'Karula & Family Photos'. The Rangers / guides from Nkorho, Arathusa, and Cheetah Plains have become our friends and post in the group about their sightings.

I use the WildEarth link for watching the drives at:

Re chats, I haven't changed too much  :ecwink   I still don't 'do' any chats.

Holding thumbs to hear from Marc or Scott shortly as Jan. 14th A.M. drive starts re Shadow and her cub.

On the PM drive for Jan. 13 CAT.

Shadow had made a kill. Hyenas appeared, cub and kill taken up to tree and Shadow on the ground 'shooing ' away hyenas. When last seen that was still the situation.

Off to check the afternoon drive for update.

Update from PM drive re Shadow and her cub. Sounds like Shadow and cub made it safely away in the night. 'Holding thumbs' this did happen.

From FB Group 'Karula and Family' - Pamela Miller posted
Quote
They (Scott and Jason) are on the edge of their signal area so feed will be in and out for a bit. Hang in there. Also the cub and shadow are gone and they hyenas are still there which could be a very good sign they got away safely. We can only hope.

And SuzHar has posted a video.

Hi Cali, Lovely to 'see' you here.

Just thinking out loud (so to speak). If Karula did mate with Mvula that likely answers the question re whether she had one or two cubs. ? I'll do some checking.

Best wishes to you and 'J'.

Ann

Later Wed. eve. My memory was in order when I was thinking that if indeed  Karula did mate with Mvula then she may have had only one cub who was taken by the hyenas. Or if two cubs, then something also happened to the other one.

Female leopards wait to mate (after giving birth) until her offspring are 18 - 24 months old. At that time she will  'shoo' them away to be become independent. Then seek out some males for mating.

Jan. 15, 2015 PM Drive

With Marc and Jason.  I was not on the drive, so the following is from viewers.

I don't know how long the drive had been on when major untoward event occurred. Marc an Jason came across a small breeding herd of ellie. An elderly female, two or three young ones and a couple of older ones.  The matriarch started toward the stationary vehicle in what appeared to be a mock charge. She did back off  and the ellies move away as did Marc. A few minutes later he went back and this time it was definitely not a mock charge.

The matriarch's tusks did damage to the vehicle. Marc and Jason were really shaken, but physically unharmed; although Marc appeared to have a minor scrape on his right hand.  His concern was what Graham would say.

Prior to seeing the ellies time had been spent viewing the Birmingham  Males. I read that the lions had been roaring - which may have been what set the matriarch in a protection mode.

First clip is a videomark and takes a few seconds to start.

Jan. 16, 2015 (CAT) Morning drive with Marc and Scott

Marc appears to be in good shape. He chatted about the encounter he and Jason had with the female elephant on the Jan. 15 afternoon drive.  I had some trouble hearing him; but I think what he was saying was that they had approached the breeding herd carefully and were not too close.  He felt that the female was in a protective mode as there had been lions nearby earlier. Also that she might not have been too familiar with vehicles.

If Marc said anything about the vehicle damage and repairs I didn't hear that.

I watched the drive for about 90 minutes.

A beautiful misty morning as the drive started.

TY BBE, for the updates and video with Marc.  I was watching the WE safari live when it happened and it was scary!  The matriarch ellie's head filled the whole cam screen as she reached the vehicle.  So glad Marc and Jason are ok and that she didn't turn over the vehicle.  She easily could have done it.   :eceek

Hello luv,

Thanks for your post re drives continuing. I only just heard the news.

In case some here don't have an FB account; this is what was posted.

Quote
We know you have all been eagerly awaiting news on whether or not drives will continue beyond the end of January. We have been just as eager to share information about this with you, but could not as things were not certain yet. While they still are not 100%, we feel we can no longer delay sharing that we are very, very close to being able to continue the drives for at least another three months, and possibly longer!

We will at least continue for another two weeks in February while we work on ironing out the final details of this longer extension. And we promise to share more with you as soon as we can.

Some of the crew will still be leaving at the end of January because they have other jobs or activities to go to. Scott, Jason and Wium will therefore still be leaving us. Marc, Bryan and Alex will stay on and some new faces will arrive soon too.

Many of you have requested the creation of a tip jar and we are happy to oblige. As before this would work through PayPal and donations can be made to the e-mail address crewtips@wildearth.tv. 50% of the received amounts will be split between Scott and Marc with the other 50% going to Jason, Wium, Bryan and Alex. (Note that the response might state you have sent money to Petrus Henricus Maria Braat. This is because we are using Peter's PayPal account to receive and disburse the funds.)

Due to changes in crew and us having to move to a new camp there will be no drives on Sunday, February 1st, but we will be back on Monday morning with Marc, Bryan and Peter.

Feb. 3, 2015 AM Drive from DPGR - Part 1.  And Tara is back for two weeks. She looks and sounds great. So happy to be back at Djuma and on drives. Same great smile, laughing and chatting a lot. Many memories brought up.

Feb. 3, 2015 AM Drive from DPGR - Part 2.

Marc and Tara met up briefly and chat for several minutes, before going their separate ways.

Short video from 'SuzHar' of the brief meet up.

Tara drove for little longer. Saw a crested Francolin on the road, and then hald way through she drove away for this drive and Marc took over.
Sky looking very ominous

Marc came across 6 bachelor Kudus and spent some time watching and chatting about them.

And I left about an hour before the drive finished - to get the drive synopsis here.

Truly wonderful to see Tara again.  :eclove :nod2

You know me by now - I will not be up in 6.5 hours to watch the PM drive.

Thanks for posting the new updates, BBE.  Nice to have Tara back.  She was well-received by the chatters on her first drive on Monday (Africa time).

Looking forward to learning more from her.  She's going to start "Who dung it?" quizzes. (Inside joke about her interest in animal poo and what can be learned from it.)    :nod2

Feb. 4, 2015 - AM Drive - Tara and I think cam-man was Andrew?

A rather quiet drive. We spent considerable time at a hyena den with a spotted hyena pup, Mom and older sibling (?). Pup was only about 2 months old - so no spots as yet. Very active, running from hole to sibling, Mom and into the bush etc.  Tara chatted about 'Teddy' for a few minutes.

Pup very curious when we arrived - but in the bush. Then Tara drove around to other side.

Wildebeest and several young calves (still slightly brown)

Impala
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7408/15824601084_7aba226a44.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/q7ndzJ)

Wildies and Impalas both cause about a 5 minute road block.   :eclol

Wahlberg's eagle  WE cam needs to be worked on as some pics I needed to darken.
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7351/15827087413_dae929bf42.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/q7zXFt)

Tara did her first 'Who dung it?' and even I guessed correctly - 'pachy-candy' (elephant).

Both the following ladies are continuing to post synopsis and videos. Beth has now completed the January synopsis'.

I may not be watching all the morning drives as life is a tad too busy for me these days.

We don't need another topic - so while not on a current drive - good news of Karula.

Chitwa had reported this leopard as being Thandi. Now corrected to say it was a couple of days ago from Chitwa property, posted on FB by Cheetah Plains - Karula. She looks well.  So Mother and daughter were in same area??

Feb. 6 AM Drive with Tara and Andrew

I had to leave shortly after the drive started. Missed a long visit with one of the Matimba Lions.

Here are 'SuzHar's' 5 videos of the event. 'Hairy Belly' was so close to Tara and Andrew.

Feb. 8, 2015 AM Drive - Tara and Andrew

Tara and Andrew spot a bull ellie in musth coming down the road.  They promptly stopped the vehicle and sat still to see what might happen. No charging behaviour.

Tara was extremely cool and even chatted quietly as the ellie checked them out up very close and personal, then kept on walking.

His tusks were very long and if ticked off would have caused major injury and much damage to the vehicle.  Um - I wonder if ellies in musth can differentiate the sex of humans?

Opens with Tara and Andrew fixing tire. Then about half the drive with Q-Male who was playing hide and seek with 2 - 4 hyenas. Then up a tree he went of security and back down after a while. Moved onto a dazzle of 6 or 7 Zebras who entertained us with their 'Hi-Jinks'.  Dwarf Mongoose, Kudu Bulls were also seen and a Lilac-breasted Roller and a Hammerkop.

I left after the zebras!

I have some sad news, but also some good news re leopards.
I have added the news to their respective areas

The sad news is that one of Thandi's two cubs has been killed.  HERE. (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1558.msg157740#msg157740)

The good news is that Karula was seen in her old stomping grounds - Quarantine, close to Cheetah Plains who reported the good news with a photo.  Scroll down the bottom of the bio about Karula HERE.  (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1558.msg157733#msg157733)

May Thandi and her one cub and Karula stay safe and continue to be well.    :pray

Added Feb. 11, 2015. at 11:42 p.m. PST.  Several people on FB expressing concern that it may not have been Karula who killed Thandi's cub. No-one actually saw the event happen - so no confirmatory proof.

Hi BBE! Hope I find you well. I have been watching Tara on the drives this last week. I thought I heard her say that Thandi's cub may have been killed by Karula. Have you heard the same? It's a tough life those animals have, for sure.

Hi 'dizzymom' (aka 'M'). Other than a few aging aches and pains I am doing well. How about you?

Re Thandi's cub. All I know is what I posted above your post. However one member of the Private Group I belong to on FB (folks from Hancock days) read somewhere on Wed. that it may have been a snake that killed the cub?

A lot of speculation but no confirmation of what occurred and who saw what and when. This sadly reads like a recent press story in which the information had not be sussed out and verified before going to the media. And it was not true.   There must be absolute confirmation of details before reporting on a story before one 'opens mouth and inserts both feet'.  And the reporter, company etc. lose credibility.

We may never know the truth of what happened.  A sad event in any case.

Ann

Handsome "Quarantine Male" was the star of the show.  Stayed with him for the better part of two hours! He tried hunting, but the prey (an Impala and a large bird) saw him in time to get away.

I have made a post twice with some pictures from the quiet Sunday morning drive. I obviously hit the wrong key to 'Post' it.  Will try once more  :puzzled2

A very quiet drive except for now two female hyena and 4 pups.  There was a small breeding herd of ellies, but clear enough through bus to take a pic. I did take one of the YBHB - but very dark as in a tree. These are pics of pretty well all we saw. I left 40 minutes before the end of the drive; but nothing happened after that as the odd rain drop became more and Tara headed for the LHP.

Tara ready to head out on the drive.

I was not 'on' the PM drive. The jungle drums have been in overdrive since it ended.

As it turns out PM drive was Tara's last drive. Scott was to be back today, but is either not coming back or delayed. A new person 'Brent' will be doing a tryout on the Monday Feb. 16 (CAT) drive.

Tara will pop in at the beginning of the drive to say 'farewell' to all who were/ weren't on the AM drive.

Tara, it has been lovely to have you back with us and I know I am not the only one who hopes you may come back again - soon.

Good luck with your work on the Ingwe Leopard Project and also on your 'big' paper:

Tara says goodbye.

Feb. 16 - AM Drive with Brent

Tara was on camera for about 30 seconds to say a final good bye. We all wish here continued success with the Leopard Project and receiving her Ph.D.

She then introduced Brent.  Brent Leo-Smith has worked at various lodges and in the bush in several of the countries in Africa - Botswana, Chad, Gabon, Namibia, Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe (or Zambia) to name a few.  He certainly is well versed in African animals, birds and customs.   He has quickly learned to repeat people's question and name.
A keeper in my books.  He has two FB pages and his photography is amazing and interesting.

Scott, Brent and Alex will be returning to join Marc. I am so delighted that Brent has been asked to come back.

Brent and Scott went to high school together.

Feb. 25 AM Drive  - which I missed.

Mvula and Karula were both seen. At different times on the drive and going in different directions. One can but hope ?

In the past week we've seen Karula, Mvula and yesterday Kunyuma.

Then I just watched all but the first part of the AM Drive for Mar. 8. Matimba and Nkuhumas near Gowrie Dam - exciting. They all look lean and hungry. The A cape Buffalo and later a Kudu escaped being a meal

Suzanne has done two videos so as I type this:

Part 1 (an hour)

Part 2 (half hour)

WE SAFARI DRIVE TIMES CHANGING

April 8 sees time slots changing to accommodate the winter months in Africa - related to sunrises and sunsets.
http://blog.wildearth.tv/2015/04/safarilive-has-new-timeslots.html (http://blog.wildearth.tv/2015/04/safarilive-has-new-timeslots.html)

I believe there is some incorrect information in post re changes.  In Canada there is Eastern Time Zone and Atlantic Time Zone. When I have time I will check The groups on Facebook for more info.

Hi BBE and all. It sorts out to this: their sunrise drive will be 12:30 am to 3:30 am EDT, and their sunset drive will be 9:00 am to 12:00 pm (noon) EDT. Good thing I am a couch napper, lol!  :couch

Hi Martha/ Dizzymom,

How are you doing these days?  I hope your weather is on the uphill swing. The past few days have been sunny and glorious.

Thanks for your post. I guess my problem was with the second listing as they didn't have 2 hours between Eastern and Central.  Also Canadian Eastern is not the same as Atlantic!!!

I'll just turn the computer on in the general time frame. Have company at present so ?? I'll be able to watch.

I also have a stack of photos of the various leopard sightings in the past month. But nned to creat the better part of a day to sort, upload to Flicker and post back here!

Suzanne Hettenvan-Wolf (SuzHar) has set up a new group on Facebook for lovers of the WE Safari drives. As of today this is where she will be posting her photos and videos from the drives. This move saves her having to post them in several places.
Safari LIVE Vids and Pics. (https://www.facebook.com/groups/285908028199464/)

 Many thanks Suzanne

Hello,

While I haven't been watching drives I have, on occasion l have been looking at 'Safari Live Vids and Pics' at:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/285908028199464/ (https://www.facebook.com/groups/285908028199464/)
I had to stop and think making a link !!!

Many changes in presenters and lions busy trying to displace some of the older lions.

As of December I am NOT re-newing my Flickr Pro subscription. However I will still have a free program and am told all my photos will still be visible.

Best wishes to all still here watching the nests and drivesI.

Ann

The days are never long enough are they? I hope U R keeping well?

I see that even though I re-read my above post several times I omitted the word 'NOT' in relation to my Flickr Pro subscription.

G'night - Ann

It has been a little over a year since Karula lost her cub to hyenas.  We have been hoping for evidence of another pregnancy as she has been seen mating several times since the loss.

Now for the good news.....

Karula is a mom again! :eclove :eclove  She gave birth to at least one cub on February 1st!  Quick view only for confirmation and the den site off limits for a while so she and the cub(s) can have privacy.  Probable father is Tingana, but Karula has also mated with the Anderson male, and possibly the shy northern male and Mvula.

The safari drives continue to get better and better, and the Nat Geo Wild TV broadcasts in the US in December were fabulous!
If you haven't been onboard for a while...... it's worth your while!   Mutliple platforms now, including YouTube (channel SafariLive live stream, Wild Earth live stream), Ustream, Nat Geo Wild (www.wildsafairlive.com (http://www.wildsafairlive.com)) and Wildearth.tv.
