Title: Nest #9 West Carmichael - 2014 - 2015 Season
Post by: boonibarb on October 17, 2014, 07:55:54 PM

This is where we will post observations, videos, & fotos of the Nest #9 Eagle Nest territory.
This territory is right next to Mum & Dad Hornby*s, to the left as we look out the webcam.
This Nest is hard to view, it is in a huge, beautiful old Fir Tree, so the Eagles are more often spotted in their perch Trees in their neighbourhood.

Last year*s topic, a highly-detailed map of Hornby with all the Nests marked on it made by wren, & links to previous seasons in this territory may be found here. (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1391.msg140585#msg140585)

So far, there hasn*t been much evidence that the Niner pair have returned.
About a week ago, i heard a trill that sounded like it was coming from the Nest Tree area.
Then a few days ago i heard another trill.
But that is it.
i have not seen the Niners yet at all.
i am in the habit of scanning the two large Trees i can see from my yard, one is across the street from me, the other is at the back of my yard.
On this day, it wasn*t an Eagle that i spotted in my back yard Tree, but someone smaller instead.
i took a foto to figure out who they were.
These are gorgeously-coloured Birds!
The male has that lovely stripe below their cheek, the female does not.

i came home on a rainy day & when i looked up at this perch Tree, FINALLY there was an Eagle perched there!

october 18 2014 12:21 - Eagle in the Tree across the road

i was showing ekf fotos taken of an Eagle in this same Tree & she exclaimed *My what lugubrious eyes that one has!*
So of course i had to ask her what lugubrious MEANS!
Then of course we made a point of using lugubrious in a sentence, as often as possible.
i agree that there is something about one of the Niner Eagle*s eyes that is just different.
To me they are huge, compared to other Eagles i am used to.
The series of fotos i was showing her can be found here. (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=128.msg10231#msg10231)
Check out the eyes of the Eagle in that post.
Now, to me, the Eagle i was seeing on this day also has such eyes.
To me, very distinctive.
& lugubrious, a very good description.

i must admit, the Niners often don*t tolerate me taking fotos of them.
i get a foto or two, & then they take off.
But this one put up with me for a long time!
This one has mutton chops like Dad, but they are kinda like mutton chops on steroids.

You can see the rain slicing by in this foto.
My camera is fogging up again, or maybe it is water drops on the lens.

The neighbourhood Ravens have had this Tree to themselves for weeks!
They are not impressed that an Eagle is there now.
i think if it were really Mum or Dad Niner, the Ravens wouldn*t be able to chase them away, which is what happened next & of course i couldn*t get my camera to focus in time.
Here the Eagle is watching the Raven fly in.
Later, i heard trilling near the Nest #9 Tree area, & the squeeing of someone who was being chased off.
There was also trilling & disturbance around this time at Mum & Dad Hornby*s Nest territory as well.

i heard trilling, & when i looked out, this Eagle was perched in the Tree across the road from me, but in a branch lower down than the one they usually perch in.
My camera was misbehaving, not focusing at all, & this was the best foto i got of the Eagle.
Two more Eagles flew past while i was out there, so there was an extra one around.

Well, i am very sad today.
Yesterday i was lying in bed in the dark, listening to the huge wind & rain storm outside, when i heard a HUGE series of cracks & then HUGE thud.
A Tree had come down near me.
Good thing it didn*t hit my house!
When i looked out as it got light, i didn*t see anything different.
But then the neighbours called to say one of their old growth Trees had fallen across my fence & onto my property.
It took a few minutes for it to register.
No!
It couldn*t be!
i looked out, & it is still hard to believe, but my beautiful back yard perch Tree is no longer there.  :ecsad  :eccry
i walked out there in the rain & only about 20-30' of it is still standing, the rest is lying across the back of my yard.
i feel such a huge loss, for myself & the Niner Eagles, & all the variety of Birds who have been in this lovely Tree.
RIP, most beautiful perch Tree.  :heart
i still can*t believe you are gone...

i take Otto for walks along the waterfront of the  Niner Nest territory.
They were perched far over to the left, from the cam.
Looks to me that the female is on the left.
She looks like the Eagle i spotted in the Tree across the road from me, here. (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1543.msg158942#msg158942)

Booni!  so sorry for the loss of that beautiful perch tree.  Has it done much damage to your lovely garden?  I have many happy memories of watching the ravens in that tree.  I can't imagine how different it must look now - it will change the patterns of light and shade, surely?  What a shock that must have been for you!

booni, huge loss to have the perch tree down! I remember seeing a merlin and band-tailed pigeon in that tree when I visited you. The tree was a welcome perch for a diversity of birds- your photos are wonderful.

Is there much damage to your fence and garden?  Will you leave the fallen part of the tree alone? or ...

In the photos of the Niner pair - the male (on the right) has a Dad-ish look about him - wonder if (how) they are related.

Booni   I sure feel your loss of your perch tree. I especially remember your video of the raven pair. Beginnings and endings can be tough.

Gosh Booni what a loss for you and the niner pair.  Hope it didn't do a lot of damage and your diversity of bird life finds other nesting and perching areas nearby.

So, the only damage to my garden was the back corner of the fencing, which the Tree is lying across & on top of.
From my house, i can*t even see it.
It is really wet back there, & the trunk is huge, so i*m not sure how they*ll rescue my fence from underneath.
It is the neighbours* Tree, & they probably will remove it for firewood.
If they don*t, i don*t mind it lying there, just as long as they repair the fence, which they say they will do.
It turns out the Tree was rotten inside, all the way down to where it broke!
Who knew?

I'm pretty sure this is the Niner pair, the same pair Booni photographed on December 6.

I took this photo from the water. The nest tree is almost directly inland from this perch, which is often occupied when I pass by.

i was going to take Otto for a walk on the beach in front of Niner territory.
We were all ready to head down there when i noticed that my boots were unlaced, so i bent down to tie them up again & for some reason my eyes were drawn to the Tree beside us there on the road!
No wonder!
14 eyes boring holes in our heads!  :eceek
Here are 12 eyes, to begin with.
Look at all the different ages here!
i literally gave my head a shake!
i thought i was seeing things.
Imagine if i hadn*t looked up, what i would have missed!

This is Eagle #8.

Here*s a closer in of the three Eagles at the top of the Tree that had seven Eagles perched there.
i forgot to mention that it was misting heavily, so the camera was getting soaked, else i*d*ve run home for my good camera.
Not good conditions for photography at all, but still, just had to share, as it was quite exciting.

(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7481/16124075700_eee1b27683_b.jpg) (https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7481/16124075700_e2254e3329_o.jpg)

Here*s a close up of the Eagle who was lower down in the Tree with seven Eagles.
Looks adult, but then look at the dark tail tips!

This is Eagle #9, i believe there were ten in all, all in this tiny space, in three Trees in one yard.
Perhaps there was something to eat down on the beach?
This Eagle seems to have a full crop, which is pushing out the white under-feathering.

(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7576/16124132090_9dd12e27b7_b.jpg) (https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7576/16124132090_01e50e1535_o.jpg)

We went down to the beach to investigate, but the tide was right up to the bank, so we couldn*t walk there.
Instead we walked to Grassy Point, looking for more Eagles, but the only ones we found were Mum & Dad.
All the other Trees were empty of Eagles, but for this one tiny area.  :puzzled2

After our walk to Grassy Point we walked back to the car & all those Eagles were still in that perch Tree.
It was misting too hard to stand out in it with my camera, so i took this video of them all from inside the car with the window rolled down.
You can see the misty rain blowing past the Eagles, & the water dripping from the Tree & their feathers.

Yesterday i was out in my yard, noticing vocalizations that sounded like a Raven, but not quite.
The Band-Tailed Pigeon is back, & i remember them making a surprising vocalization, so i was thinking maybe it was them.
They arrive every Spring, usually a large flock of them, but this year i am only noticing one.
They are getting hit by a terrible spread of disease down in California, so i hope that is not why i am only seeing one so far.
Anyway, i was getting out my camera, thinking to record video of the vocalization, when the true source of the sounds flew over my head.
The neighbourhood Raven pair!
They had been in the old Maple Tree, & one & then the second flew over my head carrying huge clumps of Moss in their beaks!  :heart
Perhaps they are getting close to laying eggs?

Later in the afternoon on sunday, i took Otto to the Niners* beach.
The whole hour & a half, the wind was roaring from the left & Eagle after Eagle of all ages were soaring against the wind, heading left, while Mum & Dad Niner trilled from their water side perch Tree.
There were at least three dozen fly overs.
It seems like a bit after this, they all showed up in Mum & Dad Hornby*s territory, following a Herring ball to the right.
i believe wren said there were lots of Eagles at Collishaw Pt.?
So maybe this is where they were all headed, then they came back to the right, as the Fish ball moved along to the right.

May 5, I paddled to Collishaw Point shortly before sunset.

This is a favourite seaside perch tree of the Niners and this one eagle with a stained face sat on it.

May 5, 7:39 pm

Halfway between that tree and Nest 7, here was an eagle pair! Meanwhile I could see another eagle perched on Nest 7, so this is not the Savoie Farm pair. I wonder if it might be the pair from the Syzygy nest, Nest 8. They have to hold a piece of shoreline somewhere. I know so little about this nest that I hesitate to even start a topic on it.

I can't make sense of the white visible under the female's back feathers. She seems to be drying her wings, or maybe she's just cooling down. This was one of the first really warm days.
Both eagles started calling, but I couldn't see who provoked those calls.

She's got a stained face too. Plus, it looks like a dark-brown mark on her outermost tail feather on the right.

There were vocalizations going on between the Nest & this Tree.

i took some of the HIP Trippers to see the Niner waterfront territory.
We right away spotted this Eagle in their perch Tree on the road, near the water!
This is the Tree we used to be able to watch from the webcam, before the cam got raised.
They were saying that this was one of the Niners, but i was saying no, look at those dark head feathers!
This is a sub-adult!
But then i looked closer at my fotos.
Yikes!
This is an adult, who has dipped their head into something bloody while eating.
Looks like someone we are hunting for, eh?
They even have her skinny toes.
But unfortunately, it is not.

i was hearing one Ninelet loud & clear, especially one day when they thought they were being delivered food!
& then it went totally quiet & i began to worry.
Then two evenings ago, i heard a Ninelet again!
Yesterday, i am pretty sure i saw them flying over my street.

i*ve been concerned about the Niner whom we found covered in blood during the HIP Trip.
But i*ve had no luck spotting them til yesterday.
i was outside & heard the Ninelet calling, then looked up & an adult was flying over, going from Niner territory into the webcam territory!
Not sure who that was, so i went out to scan all our perch Trees, but found no Eagles there.
i DID find both Niners in their water side perch Tree however.
Whoever it was that was covered in blood, has cleaned up a lot, & i don*t see any injuries there.
The Ninelet is still calling from the Nest Tree, so i made a mistake when i said they had fledged already, above.
That Tree is so hard to ob.
i keep looking for the Ninelet when i hear them, but there are too many Trees in the way to see anything.

Haven*t managed to get my eye on where that one is, as there are too many Trees in the way.

I paddled past this territory yesterday and the day before, and each time I went by there was an adult eagle on one of the perch trees. I heard an eaglet pretty constantly further on, and saw it once, between this territory and Nest 7, so I'm not sure if this is the Niner or an eaglet from the Syzygy nest, which is further inland.

Here is a photo of the adult in this territory, August 10.
This tree is near the water, maybe a hundred metres from Grassy Point. I have never spotted it from the cam; possibly it is obscured by another tree.
The eagle would be hidden by the trunk as seen from the cam. This seems to be the favourite spot on this particular tree.

On the water near that tree were a few Bonaparte's Gulls, fishing.

This is where I saw my first California Gull of the season. There were many more on Collishaw Point, newly arrived from wherever they nest. (I just asked Mr. Sibley and he said inland: mostly in the Canadian and northern US prairies but also in the mountains or interior plateaus of Washington and Oregon.)
The California Gulls are easy to tell from the other large gulls by their yellow legs and long wings that stick out well past the tail; the adults have a black and a red spot on the bill.

Yesterday i was still hearing the Ninelet on the Nest Tree, only this time, i actually got my eye on the little sneaker!
When i went back with my camera, gone again.
So this one is at least branching, i am not sure if they have fledged yet!

On my return trip, still on August 10...
Another eagle on another one of the regular perches, at what I've been thinking is the western edge of the territory.

August 10, 5:52 pm
(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5793/20589858079_884cb90551_z.jpg) (https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5793/20589858079_124994ac3c_k.jpg)

And closer to Grassy Point there is still someone perched where I saw them on the way out.

Then on August 18 and 19, I could hear screeps from my house, coming from Niner territory. When I look at the map, and draw a line in the direction from which I heard the calls, it takes me right to the nest. That's one loud eaglet.

I could simply repost the second photo from my last post to describe what I saw at sunset yesterday. Same tree, same branch... Same eagle? Possibly.

Just now I biked through the neigbourhood. No eagle perched on that particular tree. But as I approached the nest, I heard some screeps... And I found the Ninelet, still perched on a branch right by the nest!

Got some photos though the light was bad... Will post them when I get a chance.

i, too, lucked out, & finally spotted the Ninelet PLUS had my camera on me, & some decent light to boot.
Looks like this Eaglet is on the same branch as in wren*s foto.
This is quite late for an Eaglet to still be here!
i am glad that wren is still spotting one of the adults in the neighbourhood.
i am also glad that the very full crop has gone down by the next morning, as you can see in wren*s foto.

i keep forgetting to post that i am still hearing the Ninelet at or near the Nest Tree.
Just last evening, i could hear him very near the Nest Tree, but didn*t spot him in his usual perch branch.
This is very late for an Eaglet & their parents to still be on Hornby.
i fortunately saw one of the adults in the Tree across the road from me this morning.
