Title: Little Tribune Bay Nest - 2014-2015 Season
Post by: boonibarb on September 18, 2014, 08:50:46 PM

This is what wren had to say when she started this topic for the last season here. (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1512.msg153847#msg153847)

This topic is for discussing and documenting the Little Tribune Bay Nest, which can be found in the southwest corner of Little Tribune Bay.

Last year, the eagles of this territory seemed to be sitting on the nest for a while but we saw no offspring. You can see the posting from that season here (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1288.msg124513#msg124513).

I found this nest, with one eaglet on it, in 2012 after booni told me she had heard an eaglet in this area previously, but had not yet found a nest. The observations of that year are posted here (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1197.msg114262#msg114262).

Click here (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=367.msg19059#msg19059) to see the discussion from 2009-2010, which is when booni discovered the existence of this territory.

Today i was driving on the main road that passes by this Nest when i spotted large wings flapping!
i assumed this was a Turkey Vulture, til the Bird flew right over me & i could see clearly that this was a young Eagle!
i spotted this one just inland of the Nest Tree of this territory.
They flew towards the Trees of Tribune Bay & i lost sight of them.

For three days in a row in mid-January, I went walking around this territory, looking for a strange gull that an island birder had spotted during her monthly seabird count. The gull had an all-white body and mantle, black wingtips, pink legs and a bill with a red spot. The observer thought that maybe this was a Thayer's Gull with partial albinism. We were both hoping to get photos, but chance decided otherwise.

I don't always find what I seek, but here's the lovely part of being in nature: you often find things you hadn't sought to start with.
So here are two Killdeers on the beach, letting me quite close to them.

When I arrived that day, an eagle was perched above Beulah Creek, a few hundred feet inland.
A second eagle was perched right by the beach just west of the creek's mouth.

Here is that second eagle.

I thought these two might be the pair from the Little Tribune nest, but then further along, closer to the nest, were two more eagles!

If these ones are the Little Tribune eagles, then who were the other two?
Visitors, maybe... Or the Nest 24 pair, Camper's parents? I really don't know where the boundary is between their territories.

The first eagle I had spotted by the creek disappeared somewhere.

After a while the second one took off, headed for the water.

Then one of the pair nearer the Little Tribune nest took off also. Just one remains perched now. Gulls are taking off from shore too.

Then that last eagle is off, and three eagles and a few gulls are circling the bay. After a couple of minutes of this, all the eagles start calling, making a big racket.

Then everyone quiets down. The lone perching eagle goes back to his or her perch.

(https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8648/16183466449_82ac4f3865_z.jpg) (https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8648/16183466449_6c091dc885_k.jpg)

Of the pair, one lands nearer to the nest and the other disappears further into the territory.
The gulls land back into their flocks.

Looked like a whole lot of drama, but really not much happened...

Here's the Little Tribune nest seen from the beach. The nest itself is of a good size, but this must be the smallest and skimpiest nest tree on the island.

I can't find the reported white gull, but of course I'm finding other things...

Lately I have noticed that a few Wigeons often forage in the shallow pools of the upper intertidal zone as the tide retreats. I have startled them and been startled enough times now... I'm learning to spot the likely areas from afar and to find cover behind some large boulders and sneak up to the ducks.
It also gives me an excuse to show you the subtle colours and textures of this watery landscape.

Coming back from the area of the nest, within a single clump of trees I see a Pileated Woodpecker, a Northern Flicker and a Downy Woodpecker.

With a little bit of patience I get some closer views of the little Downy.

I'm wondering which territory this one might belong to...

Turns out it's an immature!

I still don't know if Beulah Creek is in this territory or in Nest 24's.

This territory does have the great advantage of having a thread open already...  :biggrin3

So here are some eagles I found perched on both sides of the creek, between Central Road and the beach, this afternoon as I made my way home.

This one, from behind, looks like she's the same colour throughout!
Actually, now that I'm looking at the full sizes, that's her belly we see, and her head is turned around to look toward the water. I see some toes among the greenery.

He's sitting on the snag where I found the Peregrine Falcon on my last visit!

From where i was working, i could see this Eagle perched on the top of this Tree from a long ways off.
Would they wait for me to finish & get down there?
Yes!
From a distance, this looked like an adult, but as you can see, this is a sub-adult.
Looks like another three year old turning four, the three year old eye stripe will be fading in the next months.
Notice the gorgeous tails feathers!

Well, darn, i got one foto & then they flew off.
So i went down to the parking lot & turned around to leave, & there they were in a different Tree!
They had their wings hanging out & were preening, & perhaps showering in the light rain.

Yesterday, just as i turned the corner from Central Rd. onto Seawright Rd., an Eagle was passing by overhead!
As i looked up, i noticed their tail looked dark, so i figured this was a sub-adult, as the head looked very white.
But as i got a better view, i realized the dark i was seeing was dark grasses, clutched in the feet!
Nesting material!
Likely heading for the Little Tribune Bay Nest.

Today I stopped over to check this nest.

I could hear eagles calling, high and low.
As I approached, it sounded as if the calls didn't come from the nest tree. They came from another tree, maybe a hundred feet to the right of it as you look toward the water.
That tree looked suspiciously thick at the top. It seemed to me that it didn't use to be that way. It was a perch tree and you could see the top. :puzzled2

So I made my way to where I had a better view of the nest.
That nest has always looked skimpy, in its small scraggly tree, but today it seemed skimpier than ever. There was a spot near the middle where I could see daylight coming through.

There didn't seem to be anyone on that nest.
Then there were more calls from that second tree. I couldn't see the top of it.
I got busy watching little birds, waiting for the big birds to give me some hint.

An eagle flew in, disappeared into the too-dense top of the second tree. Did that tree use to be like that?  :puzzled2
Around that time, the wind that had blown all day calmed down for a bit.
And then I heard it. Faint, quiet, a sound I would recognize anywhere.

Squee, squeeeeeee, squeeeeeeee....

What???
An eaglet. Or more than one.
In that second tree?
I moved to where I could get a better look.
A white head, stained, moving about over the newly-thick part of the tree.

They moved the nest!
AND, they've got a hatchling, maybe two!

I went down to the beach to see the tree from another angle. Against the sun, but still it was obvious: the eagles have built a new nest a few trees over. Most of the branches are still green and they blend with the top of the tree.

I still can't believe I heard the little ones from the ground, so early. That tree isn't all that tall, I guess. The breeze was just right. Usually we don't hear Mom and Dad Hornby's eaglets from the ground until early June.

Photos will follow once I work my way through the backlog... But I wanted to post the news right away.

A feeding in progress, do you think?

Then here's what that tree looks like from down on the beach. Hard to tell for sure that it's a nest; all the branches are green. But it didn't use to be thick like that at the top.
It's a definite move up from the starter home next door.

wren, that looks like the same Nest i spotted all those years ago when we first discovered a Nest in that corner.
i remember you*d wanted me to post fotos, so that you could do the stats, & i never did get around to it.
Do you remember what year that was?
Maybe i could dig through my unposted fotos & find the ones i got way back when?

Booni, thanks for remembering!
Here (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=367.msg21904#msg21904) is the posting of when you mentioned having maybe found the nest (it seems from the writing that you weren't sure, and now that I've seen the tree I understand why).

i had decided to gas up at the Co-op Gasbar, & as i left, i was scanning the Treetops, as usual.
Over behind the Co-op parking lot i spied a very unusual shape!
Too small for an Eagle, too big for a Robin, not the right shape for a Great Blue Heron.
Who WAS that?
i drove over there & parked in the exit driveway as no one was behind me, to get the best view of this Bird.
i took a few fotos & noticed the yellow feet!
i exited the parking lot & went to where i thought i*d be able to see this Bird better & with better lighting.
A Peregrine Falcon!

She kept making these very distinctive screechy calls that you can hear by clicking here (http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Peregrine_Falcon/id).
Scroll a little way down the page & play the sound file under where it says Typical Voice.
Here she is, making those screechy calls.
She was focused on something elsewhere.
She wasn*t noticing me at all.

& here she is blasting off!
She is so fast, even my 1/320 of a second shutter speed isn*t fast enough, so she is a blur.

i guessed that she had flown to Little Tribune Bay.
i often see Birds there, that i don*t see in other places.
i went there & scanned the Trees, but did not spot her.
i walked up the dirt road towards the main road, as i was hearing those strange calls again!
This time there were TWO Peregrines, perched in the same Tree!
Here is the one who was in the top of the Tree.
i believe this is the same Bird as i have already photographed.
The lighting has changed & my settings are making my fotos too dark, so these needed lightening.

Here is the Peregrine who was perched lower down.
Now, like Eagles, the Peregrine female is larger than the male.
So this is why i am calling the first Peregrine spotted a female.
To me, the second one appears smaller, & he has another Bird in his feet!
Perhaps this is why the female was making those calls?
Here he is, blasting off with his prey.

Here she is, in the top of the Tree.
She is watching him go, & now she is about to blast off herself.

i am thinking that these two have a nest with nestlings somewhere!

On July 1st I took a walk from this nest to Dunlop Point and back. At both ends of my walk I spied on this nest for a while. I thought I heard some screeps a couple of times, but not clearly from the nest. Maybe an eaglet calling from the back side of the nest, away from me, or else this eaglet has flown the coop too, like at Nest 25.

There certainly seems to be plenty of white poopshot and bits of down clinging to the branches.

On the return I found an angle where I could get the new nest and the old one in the same photo.
New one closer to us on the left. The old nest is not quite as easy to see, but it still occupies the whole top of the tree on the right.
