Title: Helping Camper Fly
Post by: NancyM on September 02, 2014, 06:35:49 PM
This video tribute to Scootch and her parents is a recap of the 2014 season. At the end, there is the story of another Hornby Island eaglet, Camper.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iac6pK8Vfs0

Camper was rescued from Tribune Bay Campsite on Hornby Island in early July 2014. He had been seen walking down the road with no parents in sight.  HEART rescued the eaglet, one of the smallest and youngest that they had ever held - he still had woolly down showing through his feathers. Read about his rescue HERE (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1468.msg153910#msg153910).

MARS found him to be very thin, dehydrated and covered in parasites but not injured. A few days later, Camper had a friend from Quadra Island (Hy) join him.

At the end of July, Camper and another eagle rescued on Hornby Island were sent from MARS to NIWRA, also on Vancouver Island, so that they could build their flight muscles in the large pens available there.

It is expected that Camper will be returned to MARS for release later this fall. HEGPS is making a donation to MARS and to NIWRA in thanks for their care of Hornby Island wildlife. In addition, HEGPS is sponsoring Camper's release in memory of our friend Mojo.

If you would like to join us in sponsoring Camper's care, or in dedicating his release to Mojo's memory, contributions can be made to
Hornby Eagles Projects Society http://www.hornbyeagles.com/support.htm (http://www.hornbyeagles.com/support.htm)

or directly to MARS https://www.canadahelps.org/dn/10210 (https://www.canadahelps.org/dn/10210)

Please mention to us, or to MARS, that Scootch sent you.

This is one of the juvenile eagles that was transferred to us from Mountainaire Avian rescue and was nicknamed 'Camper' as he/she was found at a campground unable to fly. He/she is now flying well and is socializing with two other rescued juveniles and two adults.

YW, s/he is looking pretty good.  Hopefully we'll get a chance to visit Camper & friends prior to release.

It's lovely Camper gets another chance with a lot of help from many. From rescuers to rehabs to release.  :ecsmile

One more photo of Camper from NIWRC.

HEGPS is pleased to announce that we have added three new designs to our Cafe Press shop created by NancyM. Two of the designs celebrate the soon to be released eaglet “Camper”, rescued near the Tribune Bay campground by HEART July 5/2014.

HEGPS is sponsoring Camper’s release in honour of Mojo, our dear friend and HEGPS member who passed away last November. Story of Campers rescue. (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1468.msg153910#msg153910)  All profits from the sale of the Camper design products will be donated to  MARS  (http://wingtips.org/)

The third design features the delightful Scootch, this season’s eaglet!  It features one of boonibarb’s fabulous photographs of Scootch.

All three designs are available now at the HEGPS  Cafe Press Designs  (http://www.cafepress.com/hornbyeagles)

The shop also has products that feature Mom and Dad Hornby and several of their offspring.

We are thrilled to announce that "Camper", a Hornby Island eaglet that was rescued by HEART, is ready for release back into the wild.  He will be released at the First Nations at Qualicum River Tuesday, November 4, 2014.  There will be fish in Rivers and Eagles about!!!

HEGPS is sponsoring Camper's release in memory of MoJo.  Several members of HEGPS that reside in BC will be attending the release and we will hopefully have great pictures and video to share with you soon.

Many of you generously donated to MARS for Camper's care  in memory of Mojo.  These funds will also be presented to MARS at the release.  Thank you so much.

It was a perfect day for a release!  A small group of local HEGPS members gathered at the Big Qualicum river, to witness Camper's release, and, of course, to remember our dear Mojo.

Here is a short video of the event.

Opening the carrier.

Camper took only a little while to turn himself around in the crate and hop out - but it did seem like an age!  I was struck with how calm he appeared to be, and how great he looked.

It was lovely to watch Camper fly so strongly, circle around, and head off towards Hornby!

The very last glimpse of him he was a distant speck in the sky and he appeared to be over the water, heading in the general direction of Hornby - he really looked like he knew exactly where he was heading.   :eclove

Arrow shows Camper as a distant speck!

ETA: Added last sight of Camper as he became a distant blur - but I am sure there will be other photos.  All of the photos I have used were 'stills' from the video, to show the sequence of events.

I went walking on the Big Qualicum estuary earlier in the morning, while the tide was low and the eagles were still feeding. There is a lot of water in the river but still a good number of fish carcasses on the bank. I took this photo from the bridge, just as the clouds were starting to clear. We ended up with beautiful weather.
This was the setting for Camper's release. He flew from the south shore, which is on our right.
There are six eagles within view, and a few more outside of the frame. There are also seals lounging on the shore, geese, a heron, some mergansers and gulls and several other kinds of seabirds. (Click on the picture, then click again to see them all.)

Now we skip to early afternoon... A MARS volunteer has picked up Camper at NIWRA and brought him to the site. Camper, after a long hesitation, steps out of his carrier and into full, unrestricted daylight.

He looks around for a few seconds more...

(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3939/15528170979_9feaf971ed_z.jpg) (https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3939/15528170979_4d7aa86c60_k.jpg)

Then he's off.
(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3943/15094676573_0d7424a3cd_z.jpg) (https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3943/15094676573_f02ed7292c_k.jpg)

As he crosses the river into the unknown it strikes me, possibly at the same time as it strikes him, that he's never flown this far before, ever in his life. His wings pause, but there is no wall now, no need to stop. On he goes, around the far clearing and out of sight. A feast of fish will await him here on the next low tide.

I am in the process of posting more photos about the area where Camper was released. (I doubt that he undertook the crossing to Hornby, by the way. I saw him round the corner and glimpsed him heading left again through the trees. He probably gave his wings a good try and then found a tree nearby to rest from all this excitement.)

To learn more about Camper's new home and fishing buddies, check out the postings, starting here. (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=637.msg157777#msg157777)

I should add what was for me the final touch of my time at Big Qualicum, right after Camper flew off, carrying with him our thoughts about Mojo.

This is what I saw next. I don't know if anyone else noticed.

You have to click on the pictures for sure, to see the colours.

I did notice, I thought something had startled them to flight. Did not realize they were red-winged black birds. Way cool. They were probably migrating? I wasn't fast enough with my camera to catch them.

Good one Wren.
