This is where you can find postings related to the Belcarra/#16-19 Nest territory.
This is a beautiful territory, on the north side of the Island.

Yes you do!  :ecsmile
Looks like an adult, whose breeding plumage is fading toward the more neutral winter garb.

Thanks wren!
i have much to learn.

Okay, we were out walking on this beautiful sunny day when we spotted this adult Eagle perched near the top of the Belcarra Nest Tree.
This was the first Eagle i had seen returned to this neighbourhood.

This Eagle spotted us watching right away.
& unlike the pair that is usually here, seemed not used to being in a neighbourhood, having people watch them.
So, perhaps this was a visitor, rather than one of the Belcarra pair?

We continued on our walk, & found this same Eagle in a typical Belcarra pair Perch Tree, not far from the Nest, & closer to the water.

This Eagle was doing a slow soar down the road above our heads.
Not sure if this is the same Eagle.
They almost seem to have dark feathering on their head & tail.
Hard to tell with the lighting & distance.

We were walking down the road right past the Belcarra Nest Tree & right across the road from us was this lovely Raven digging through someone*s nice tidy raked pile of Fir needles!
i thought it was sort of whimsical, watching the Raven scatter needles like this.
Usually they are quite shy, yet we got quite close & watched & i took this video.

Okay, out for our walk, & here is the Belcarra male perched in the top of his Nest Tree in lovely lighting!

Notice this Eagle has a distinctive beak on the right side!
i spotted this last year & posted about it here. (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1243.msg135378#msg135378)
Last year i called this the male, so i will call them the male again now.

In all of these fotos, he is perched on his left foot, with his right foot bunched up & tucked under his belly feathers.
A relaxed position that also rests & warms that foot.

Here he is later, in the same spot, in even beautifuller light!
That distinctive dip mark in the right side of the beak shows up well here.

At the beach access to the left of the Belcarra Nest Tree, we found lovely Harlequin Ducks!
Was there some vying for the female going on here?
Not sure if that happens, this time of year or not.

The same day, & here are the Belcarras, hanging out in a perch Tree near the water, not far from their Nest Tree.
i am a bit confused about who is who here.
They are perched close together, though it was hard to get them in one foto together.
Here is the first one, on the older dead branch.

november 27 2013 11:53 - Belcarra Eagle

(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7452/11391752146_28193507f5_b.jpg) (http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7452/11391752146_faf7cf415e_o.jpg)

i believe this one is not the one with the notch in the right side of the beak.
But to me, this one looks more male than female.

(http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3747/11391863333_0369bd08e5_b.jpg) (http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3747/11391863333_c546c93781_o.jpg)

To me, this one looks more female, & seems to be the one with the notched beak.
Is that a permanent spot mark on top of the head?
That would help with identifying one from the other.

Here are the Belcarras, a week later, on a nice sunny day on the top of their Nest Tree.
i believe the female is above, the male a bit lower down.
But who knows.

i keep seeing just a hint of brown still there.

Out on our walk this day, i spotted a Gull who looked a bit strange, just standing on the rocks of the beach.
i had also seen one fly overhead, & gotten fotos of a strange silhouette, kinda like an open beak with extra appendages that just didn*t make sense.
i believe the flier was just like this Gull, with a partly swallowed/digested Sea Star hanging out of their beak!
i worried that a Gull like this is terribly vulnerable until the Sea Star goes down, so it is good to know that they can fly with one still hanging out of their beak!

Notice there*s a poopshot right there on the rocks under the tail, so this Gull has been standing still for a bit.

There is an annual c*mas Bird count that takes place on Hornby as well as lots of other areas.
This year it was december 19, & i was asked to participate!
i was very interested to help, with what little i know about shore Birds.
i am hoping to learn more about identifying who is who.
Water Birds are very complicated, as there are young, then adult, then breeding & non-breeding plumage.
Very confusing, but fun to learn!
We started our counting at Tralee Point, then did a  long stretch of beach near the Belcarra Nest.
We were trying to decide whether these were American or Eurasian Wigeons.

Even though the Birds were mostly far away, i took lots of fotos, just to help me learn about who is who.
My more experienced friends had a telescope, & they were able to i.d. Birds quite a ways off.
There was a huge flock of Scoters, they counted over 100!
They called them all Surf Scoters, but when i look at the fotos from that day, i see there are also Black Scoters in there!
At first, they all look the same.
But now look for a Scoter who is all black except for a bright orange/yellow knob on their bill!
There are three in this foto.
i believe the brown Scoters are all female Surf Scoters.

Not a good foto, but an excellent example of the difference between a male Black & Surf Scoter.

This foto shows you the difference between male & female Surf Scoters.
But who is that, in the center of the foto, different from all the rest?

Here she is again, in the lower right of the foto.
Meanwhile, a male Black Scoter is in the upper left.
The rest are male & female Surf Scoters.
Aren*t they cool?!

That was a challenge!
Especially when a Sharp-Shinned Hawk cleared the yard for about an hour.

booni,  good lesson on the Scoters!  I have been going through the same learning curve on water and shore birds and am relying heavily on taking photos to study later. Every time I go to the local beach, I come home with another one or two species new to me. Last time it was the male white-winged scoter with the white "comma" under the eye. We are supposed to have black scoters here, too but I have not seen any yet.

Otters again!
When i see Otters, the word gamboling comes to mind.
i am happy enough to spot one, never mind a whole group of 7-9 like this!
They were bobbing around in the water, i kept missing them in fotos.
It was such dull light, their movements were often just a blur.
These are the best of what i got that day.
Here*s one just popping up out of the water with two Harlequin Ducks in the foreground.
Notice their tail!

This Otter is doing what is called spy-hopping, bobbing up high in the water to take a good look at something.
Orcas do this too.
Notice the diving one to our right.

i like to practice for photographing flying Birds by tracking planes as they fly overhead.
The Nikon P510 isn*t so good at this as my good camera, but this one came out well!
i love to see the detail of the planes.

So, *tis the season, & i am already getting SO behind in posting all the goodies i have gotten!
So, some of this won*t be in date order, but at least it will be posted.

Now, in the Belcarra territory there have been tons of Eagles of all ages that i have noticed hanging out in the Trees, flying over, & making lovely youngster calls.
So on a day off i went to investigate & found a dead Sea Lion on the beach.
This explains all the Eagles i am seeing!
A neighbour also told me that a road kill Deer was put on the beach in the same area.
i was seeing youngsters with blood on their beaks, so what a relief to know it wasn*t theirs!
i also saw a Raven taking off with a hunk of really red stuff in their beak.
i spotted this pair in the Periwinkle area, hanging out side by side in the wind.
How lovely!
There are two ages of youngsters here.
The one on the left is juvenile, i*d say, so not even a year old.
Their buddy looks more like one year old turning two in the spring.
Note how the younger one has more dark in the beak, while the older one is developing the golden cap on top of the head, plus the dark neck feathers changing suddenly to the whiter breast feathers of a two year old.

Very close to where the lovely pair of youngsters were perched, i spotted this adult-looking Eagle in the shadow.
They seemed to be pulling at food from their feet, & then they feaked.
The light wasn*t good, but the silhouette still shows what they are doing & is pretty cool!
There is noisy construction going on, so i had to stop the video.

Likely one of the Belcarra pair.
They don*t seem wet, so maybe they are just airing their feathers in the wind & the sun?

Okay, so i started this day of photography in the Nest #20 territory here. (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1444.msg148503#msg148503)
After spending time with that sweet, forlorn youngster there, i carried on, looking for more Eagles.
My eye was caught by this gorgeous blond-feathered youngster glowing in the sun in a perch Tree by the water!
Look how the younger youngsters have all that white mixed in with the brown of their body feathers.
Look at their lovely tail feathers, too.

i have left the last sweetie & moved on & found another.
i wish i could have recorded all the vocalizations going on that day!
Especially the really interesting sounds that the different ages of youngsters made.
i intended to, but this was the only time i was able to catch any on video.
Look at this young one, trying to keep an eye on everything at the same time, including me, but also looking to where all the different calls are coming from & to the new arrivals soaring overhead!

Yesterday i was near the Belcarra Nest Tree both morning & early evening, & both times i saw the pair perched side by side at the top of the Nest Tree.
About mid-day, one was right in the Nest, nestorating?, while the other was perched next to the Nest.
Later, both were perched in separate branches, on either side of the Nest.
This is the first time i have seen one in the Nest.
Will they be using it this year perhaps?
They seemed to have nested elsewhere last season.

A young sweetie spotted in Belcarra territory, peeking at me.
They still have a dark eye, beak still mostly dark but some yellow coming in, top of head golden, so perhaps a one year old turning two?

What a sweet face!
There is some Fish flesh stuck to the lower beak.

Here are some of the other Eagles who were perched in the Belcarra Territory on this day.

This one is a sub-adult, just about to turn adult & five years old! ♥
Lovely yellow beak & eye.
Head almost white with some head feathers next to the beak still brown.
& look at those gorgeous tail feathers!, turning white with beautiful dark brown still mixed in there.
& a few Fish scales on the beak to boot!

Here*s a better foto of them.
Just LOVE those tail feathers.
& look how there is a smear of dark feathering on the cheek, in a sort of crescent shape.
You can see more Fish scales on the beak in this foto.

Here*s the next beauty, an adult!
& such a sweet face on this one!
Is there just a hint of brown in the head feathers?
So perhaps a five year old just turning six?
Look at the scales on that lovely yellow beak.

Here*s another individual, & what a face!
Small, narrow head, this one looks quite different, to me.
Look at the smudge of brown under the chin & just above the left eye.
Maybe still a bit of brown in that outside left tail feather?

Another four year old, just turning five.
Beak not quite pure yellow, still some dark mixed in there.
Still some dark in the white head feathers.
Dark in the tail feathers too.

Had to wait for this one to peek out at me from behind that Fir branch!
Top of head is golden, beak is quite yellow, eye has lightened quite a bit from the brown of a younger Eagle.
Lots of dark still in the tail feathers.

Here are the Belcarras, still perched side by side in their Nest Tree, seeming to not have eggs yet?
The big Eagle on the left has Fish scales & goop on their beak so has had a nice meal recently.
This Eagle seems quite a bit bigger than the one on the right, so perhaps she is the female?

A youngster spotted in the Belcarra territory.
Looks perhaps three turning four now?
The eye stripe is fading, beak & eyes are becoming quite yellow.
Looks like a bit of blood on the left toe, so perhaps feeding recently?

Going back a bit in time, here are three more Eagles who were visiting the Belcarra territory on this day.
Haha.
We are peeking at each other through the branches.
Eye still brown, but getting to be lighter brown.
Beak turning yellow, but still some dark hiding behind the branch.
Top of head turning white.
Lovely orange feet.
Perhaps a two year old developing the eye stripe of an Eagle just turning three.

Another visitor that day, this one the same age, but a bit different.
Beak is more yellow, but still some dark in it, eye turning more yellow than brown, lovely dark tail feathers have some white on them, top of head turning white & eye stripe of three year old developing.
So a two year old just turning three.

(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3808/13670527173_74437171cf_b.jpg) (https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3808/13670527173_147c325fc3_o.jpg)

This one is a three year old, with the dark eye stripe fading.
Now they are considered a sub-adult.
The eye has that in between colour to me that is almost blue.
The beak is very yellow, but not completely.
What we can see of the tail feathers is very white.

We were up & down the road in front of the Belcarra Nest Tree on this day so i was able to catch a foto of the pair perched together once in a while.
Looks like the big female on the left & the smaller male to the right.
They both seem to have food stuck to their beaks.

i have heard how beneficial Dandelions are to wild Birds, but never seen proof with my own eyes until this day!
& AJL has written for us some good information about the benefits of Dandelions.
Thank you AJL!  :heart

One man's weed is another man's banquet.

The list of creatures that love and need dandelions (be it the nectar, leaves, flowers, roots or seeds)  is very long.  It includes  bees,
butterflies, grazing mammals (cattle, sheep, deer), bears, gophers, squirrels, ground birds (like grouse, quail and turkey) and songbirds.

Gold finches, Purple finches, buntings, siskins, towhees, blackbirds and sparrows agree that the delicious seeds are full of nutrients.

While most songbirds feed insects to their nestlings, Gold finches, Purple finches and House finches raise their young  almost entirely
on the unripe seeds of  'weeds' such as dandelion and native thistle.  Without them they could not breed, as mature (dried) seeds lack the
compounds that promote growth in these species.

The humble dandelion is also used by many humans as food and for its medicinal properties.
A Canadian research team has found that  dandelions may have cancer-killing activity!
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/windsor/cancer-killing-dandelion-tea-gets-157k-research-grant-1.1248382 (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/windsor/cancer-killing-dandelion-tea-gets-157k-research-grant-1.1248382)

Because so many dandelion consumers are sensitive to chemicals,  it is crucial to remove unwanted plants by digging up the roots.  If
you prefer to leave these important plants, you could always put up an 'experimental dandelion farm' sign, and enjoy watching the
butterflies, birds and bees partake. :mhihi

It was Spring & suddenly warm & damp & out came the Carpenter Ants in droves.
They start off with wings, then drop them & seem to look for hidey holes.
This unlucky one was caught by a Spider!
The red on the Spider was really noticeable & cool.
Anyone know what kind of Spider this is?

It was a hot sunny afternoon & the Eagles were soaring over the big yard.
This Bird was lower down & didn*t seem as big as an Eagle.
Could they be a Red-Tailed Hawk?
It is not every day you see one of these on Hornby!

Going by the stained feathering around the beak, this could be Mum Belcarra, as could the Eagle on the left in the post above.

At one point i wasn*t sure if i was hearing both the female & the male?
But definitely i am not hearing any fledged youngsters in this territory this year.
i am not even sure if they nested this year.
They certainly didn*t use their Belcarra Nest.

i got a call from people who live on the waterfront in this territory.
They do the water Bird count every month, so they are used to looking at Birds.
Some kids on the beach told them there was a sick Loon on the shore, so they called me & asked what to do.
i took this one assessment foto while the man went down there with the net to catch the Loon.
There was no question this Loon needed help.
The Loon barely moved from this position, & the man ended up just picking him up & putting him in the net.
On the beach there we transferred the Loon into the carrier, who then went back to a position like in this foto.
i zoomed down to the ferry to get the Loon a ride to Buckley Bay & lucked out when i found a couple willing to take the kennel there.
MARS was going to meet the couple at Buckley Bay.
What a beautiful Bird, you never see them on the shore like this.
Their legs are way far back towards the tail so they are not meant for walking on the land.

The Loon went to MARS, but they don*t have a pool to keep Birds like this in, so the Loon needed to be sent on to a place that did.
That place requires a certain body score before they will accept a Bird for care, & this poor Loon had too poor of a body score & needed to be euthanized, unfortunately.
