After getting cleaned and inspected, the cam was returned to the nest tree today (October 3) around 1:14 PM.

Just 10 minutes later, an eagle landed on the Babysitting Tree!!  This eagle stayed there until 5:09 PM ... a whole 4 hours.

Gosh

An eagle flew to the BST this afternoon (around 2:07), but no one thought it was Dad, partly because the trills did not sound like Dad and there was a tiny bit of eye-shadow that is not Dad-like.  And it sure was not Mom.

Later in the day (around 5 PM), an eagle flew to the Peters' Tree and sat there for an hour or so, then flew up to the BST.  This one was thought to be Dad!  He was still there when darkness fell an hour later.   :eclove

There was some interesting action today - be sure to check the video thread and if booni has time to post, she got some very interesting video and photos today.  (eta:  booni's photos are posted starting HERE (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1385.msg139916#msg139916))

This afternoon, it appeared that a large visitor (a female?) was sitting in the BST while Dad was also there.

At 6:57, the eagle that was sitting lower in the BST flew over to the nest tree! We thought Dad had been around for the past few days, and this eagle in the nest really does appear to be Dad. The other large eagle in the BST does not appear to be Mom.

Noon
It seems there are some visitors around - we have seen at least two visitors in the BST today.  A big eagle with "chuff chuff" calls sat in the BST off and on from 7 AM  (for well over 2 hours at one point).  A second big eagle landed near the first one, in the BST, booni reports that one is a subadult with dark tips on the tail feathers.  So far, we have not seen Dad today.

Dad and Another flew to the nest this afternoon. The other eagle was not Mom and she left very quickly.  Dad stayed for awhile: he scootched in the nest, then got up on the CU box.

That female sure reminds me a lot of the one that was after Dad last year, Pass. She is a little bolder now than last October.

Thursday Oct 10 and Friday Oct 11

The large female who-is-not-Mom hung around and followed Dad around both days. She even landed on the Peters' Tree while he was perched there.

Late on Friday afternoon, though, a familiar "cachunck"  call was heard and around 6:30 PM an eagle-who-we-think-is-Mom  landed on the long bare branch of the BST.

Saturday Oct 12
It certainly sounds as if Mom is home - she may have spent the night on the BST, with Dad on a perch a bit lower in the same tree. The video thread has a record of her calls (and Dad's ) before daybreak.  :eclove

It is so good to have the two of them back on Hornby.  They have been spending a lot of time together.  Yesterday early the two of them escorted another pair of eagles toward Sandstone area and later Dad was escorting another eagle near His and Hers toward the Niner territory while Mom watched from atop His and Hers.  Later in the day they spent hours in the babysitting tree together trilling, whooping and cachunking at what I suppose were visitors - no escorts and no chases - just lots and lots of talking.

Did you all see the "action"  on October 20?  A few days ago, yes, but my reaction time is getting slower.

Dad brought several sticks to the nest, including a really long one  ... but then he was pruning the shrubbery in front of the WA cam - Have we ever seen him here before?

This is amazing.
Any insights as to why he's doing this?
Of course, aside from last summer, there is no way we would have caught this behaviour before, except from the ground, and the odds of that would have been abysmal.

wren, I have no idea what Dad was up to!  I could see that he bit off some greenery (it fell through the front of the branches at one point) - but if he did not want the greenery for the nest, then I don't know why he did that.

Always something new to see through this cam.

Both eagles were in the nest around sunset.  The cam "swiped" to gray and we watched first one then the other leave.  Both apparently flew to the Babysitting Tree - they were sitting in branches that are much lower than we are used to seeing.  The cam operator said that Mom was on the lower left and Dad on the upper right (she could see Mom's dark back-of-the-head feathers).

Thanks, Sparky!

I looked at the archive video and took some screen shots, then AJL and I looked at them last night.   We think this eagle has a distinct "bandit stripe" through the eye and is possibly older than it first appeared (maybe hatched 2010 or 2011).

oh, boy!
Mom and Dad were on the Peter's Tree and flew off at exactly the same moment ~ were they going for food?
next, a youngster flew into the lower branches of the BST, but soon it gave a poop shot and flew off toward the nest ...
where an adult was flying in, possibly with a food item.

There was squealing and tussling. This is a slow-motion video that Paintnut made from the archive file.

16:06  Our two are in the BST when a  young(?) eagle comes in from the left. That eagle soars around and up to near the top of the BST - both eagles flap at it and then one takes off in a bit of a chase.  Not an angry chase, tho.

The archives were all chopped up into bits, this starts just after the first approach by the young one.

Eggciting News!

Based on Mom's behaviour, we believe she laid an egg on Sunday evening, March 30, at 8:19 PM.  Monday morning she and Dad did a classic switch, which serves to confirm that there is an egg in the nest.

Tuesday

Mom and Dad incubated all day yesterday, with several exchanges taking place. In the evening, when Mom returned to the nest, Dad flew off, but Mom stood for 1.5 hours. As dark fell, we were concerned about her.

This morning, she seems better, but we are keeping a close eye on her.  Also, Maj from the Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society will be monitoring Mom as well.

This video is from early Tuesday, when Mom got up and left the nest (Dad came in to incubate the egg).

Mom seemed good today, not at all lethargic as she was last night.  Booni went out and got some video and pictures of her, posted here (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1385.msg150327#msg150327)  Thanks, booni!

Thursday Night, April 3

What happened at 19:11 last night? We believe that Mom Hornby stood up to lay a second egg. The first minute of this 5-minute video shows the lead-up to her standing. She laid the egg at 19:12, then stood for several minutes to allow the egg to dry. Last night, the wind had us wondering if that was why her feathers were ruffled up, but a review this morning - plus the way she and Dad are now rolling the eggs - more than suggests a second egg. Congratulations, Mom and Dad!

We have a hatch!

Mom stayed on the nest for 22 hours yesterday (it was raining, but it seemed maybe there was something else going on ...).  This morning, when Mom finally agreed to leave, dad approached the eggs  and settled in a way that seemed to indicate maybe one egg was now a hatchling.

then ....  at noon, Dad brought a fish and Mom fed the wee one:

12:08 dad in with a fish; mom and dad just admire their new arrival for a bit; mom takes the fish from dad's foot; dad flies off to the right and we hear him trill; mom takes the fish and 12:11 is the first feeding

PS. This is most likely the second egg.  The first egg would be 40 days today, the second one is 36.  So, we will probably have only one hatch this season.

for those wondering about Scootch this morning ... Wren reported last night around 9:45 that she had phoned Gregg who said that he saw Scootch on the branch, saw her miss-step, hit the branch below, and then fly off toward the ocean, accompanied by two other birds, probably Mom and Dad.

Maybe they're having breakfast on the beach this morning?  :nod2

We spent all day Saturday looking for Scootch (booni and wren on the ground, the rest via the cam) and did not spot her.  It seemed that Mom Hornby might know where to look so we have also tried following Mom.  She spent time on the nest apparently waiting to see if Scootch would respond to food that she displayed in her beak and then appeared to eat; on a tree on the far edge of her territory (Mishi's Tree); and then in late evening she was low down in Constable's Tree.

We will keep looking on Sunday.

Come home, Scootch.

booni did an exhaustive search on Sunday afternoon - up and down the tree line along the beach from His&Hers tree to Big Rock and back.  Then she searched along the adjacent road. She did not see any sign of Scootch.

On the cam, we have not heard any sounds from Scootch all day.  Mom has been on the babysitting tree since 2 PM (it is now 7:30). She has not called as often as she did yesterday.  We have not seen Dad all afternoon.

SCOOTCH IS HOME, SAFE AND SOUND!!

Around 7:40 this morning, someone landed on the cam tree (Gregg's Tree).  A few minutes later, screetching was heard as Mom flew to the nest tree stump with food in her beak.  She displayed the food, hoping to lure Scootch to the nest, but in the end went to the branch in Gregg's Tree to which Scootch had fledged on Friday.

booni rushed over to the location and found Scootch in the very tip-top of Gregg's Tree!

Scootch later flew to the Babysitting Tree, then to the WA support, and as I write, Scootch is down in the nest eating a fish.

Mom and Scootch are still on Hornby Island.  apparently Mom is not yet sure that Scootch is ready to follow her off-island to the salmon runs.  Any day now, though, they might leave.

Here is Scootch on Constable's Tree.  She flies right toward the camera and then up to land on the cam tree (Gregg's Tree).
