Title: The Periwinkles
Post by: boonibarb on May 22, 2013, 08:19:51 AM

i have been seeing this pair of Eagles hanging out in the same perch trees almost every time we go to this beach access point.
This area is right beside the Belcarra territory, towards Whaling Station Bay, halfway between the Belcarra Nest & Nest #20.
Because of the staining on the facial feathers on the female, i can tell these aren*t the Belcarra Eagles.
i*m not sure how long they have been together.
In the past i would have called these the Belcarras, & considered this territory to be theirs.
i have no idea if this *new* pair has a Nest.
i am copying over some posts, to start with, from the Belcarra topic.

Meanwhile, down the road a ways to the right, in territory i would have guessed to be the Belcarras*, i spotted these two who appear to be attached at the hip.  :heart

Sometimes i think these two are Siamese twins!
They are a GORGEOUS couple.
The female is noticeably larger than the male, & look at the staining of her head feathers, likely caused by eating dead Seal/Sealion.

We were at the Periwinkle beach access hanging out in the sun with the Geese & their Goslings.
There were a few fish boats out on the water, & there seemed to be something out there that Eagles were flying way out there & fishing for.
i watched this youngster fly in from out there & land on the Periwinkle Perch Tree.

i would peg this as a just-turned-one year old Eagle.
They are getting the golden head cap feathers, but they don*t have that distinctive dividing line between the white of their breast & the dark of their head feathers like a two year old would have.

While we are sitting here, i often see an adult from the Periwinkles, the Belcarras or Nest #20 fly out from their perch Tree & make a grab at something they have spotted in the water.
With the P510 it is hard to catch this action, so i was happy to get this foto on this day, showing that the Belcarra or Periwinkle adult had made a successful catch!

We were at the Periwinkle beach access & i was photographing the Periwinkle female in her usual perch tree.
The Raven fledglings in this area have formed a gang!
They all fly around together, looking for trouble.
Not sure if they are all from the same Nest or if they have joined ranks together.
Anyway, female Periwinkle had focused her attention on something.
Meanwhile, the youngster Raven landed next to her & seems to be trying to get her attention!
But she is having none of it!
She is like a statue, her attention on whatever it was does not waver an inch.

Love the big fluffy stuck on her beak.
How scary is a big old Eagle with a fluffy stuck to her beak.
Still some facial feather staining visible.

On the beach the orange of this Robin really stood out.
i thought maybe they were something different, but nope!, a Robin with a winged Bug in their beak!
Looks like this one has someone to feed.
They were hopping all over the beach, getting a full beak.

Apparently they are meant to scare Birds away by looking like a Snake!
They even rear up their heads like one, when necessary.

That kinda string, coming from their right side, i thought they were entangled in the strap, but they do this to hang from, usually attached to a branch or leaf.

When i rescued the injured Great Blue Heron in the Shingle Spit Nest territory, i had chased him through bush & stream, just to have him end up where he was in the first place.
When i climbed out of the creek with my towel, THIS is how he faced me off!, kronking too!  :eceek
All i remember are those two eyes, & how the beak disappeared.
i told him he was tough, & that i was scared, which i was!
You can read the rescue story here. (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1247.msg136586#msg136586)
Look at the lovely stripey neck feathering.

Look at the triangle of yellow on the upper beak near the face.
Lovely eye colour!

It was a hot hot day on the beach when i spotted this lovely Great Blue Heron again.
The heat waves were distorting the Heron, so only a few of the fotos i took are passable.
Look at the lovely setting for this beautiful Bird.
You can even see their reflection.
