Title: Discussions from LIVE CHAT
Post by: Blue on December 27, 2009, 09:44:55 AM
This thread is to discuss topics that came up on the webcam Chat.

Sometimes, we can't get on the Chat but can add something here or continue a discussion here.

edited Sep 19 to include posts about problems with the Wild Earth or ZapLive chat rooms. ~NancyM

I think the bird we were hearing around 9:15am today was a Hermit thrush.  The song started with a clear note followed by beautiful lilting notes.

I also think passerine was right, that there were finch songs there too.

I don't think it is a H. thrush.
It's song beings with staccato notes (up to six depending on the song) of the same pitch, followed by a quick swoop up to a note that is about 1/2 octave higher. DeeDeeDeeDeeDeeDee DEE.

I had a lot of static but AJ mentioned it could be heard with chickadees & nuthatches. The Brown creeper hangs out with those birds.

Big discussion this evening on Chat about a curling poopshot.  The segment was right after Mom gave three calls while brooding on the nest.

Two screeps heard, Mum replies with three cries
Broadcast:  09:22 - 12 April 2010 @ 00:04:58

http://www.wildearth.tv/web/dch-hornby-01;jsessionid=F5244FBA60B28D2D779E82A180913D0B.node3?streamId=dch-hornby-01%2F2010%2F04%2F12%2F2010-04-12-09-22_dch-hornby-01.flv&bspId=76696&start=298

I am pretty sure it was a vehicle going down the road where we first see it on the bottom left, travelling towards the center of the screen.  If you watch the video, the "vehicle" travels along the direction of the road until no longer seen between the branches and sticks.  It can still be seen at center-screen.  It does not fall like a poopshot would.

White blob appears, lower left:

Travels in direction of road below:

Just a trail left here:

Could it be Raptorman leaving a trail of dust with his motorbike down there?

Blue and I working away together. With help of several features.  To me it looks like a flat bed truck heading toward Doug and Sheila's house or beyond.  I think I heard a 'truck motor' like sound as it approached and passed nest. ?

Same but circled

38 sec. video just on the left hand lower corner of the video; Truck passes through at about 33 sec.

 :eclol  The Hornby chat poop sleuths summary:

The taped recording was the 9:22 A.M. segment. Booni made it because she heard two notes that sounded like screeps, to which Mom replied with three notes.  Foldi noticed movement behind Mom and voila, there it was.

The poop shot occurred at about 5:16 minutes into the tape. It can be seen spiraling up from just left of the end of Mom's tail, from below the nest rim.
The vehicle drove past the nest at about 5:41 minutes into the tape. It certainly was not the 'movement' we were evaluating.

Who screeped and pooped?
At about 9:14 A.M., Dad chased a large dark bird past the nest. Doug went outside to look, but by that time Dad was on the Babysitting tree in full guard position, as Doug put it.
It was unlikely that a third eagle would be allowed to land on the nest tree for a poopshot, just below Mom, given that the eagles were vigilant and aware that there was a large bird in the area.
After reviewing the tape many times and looking at Booni's photos of the branch just below the nest rim, we determined that the screeper and pooper was Dad, guarding the nest from a different vantage point.

Again, look behind the left side of Mom's tail to see the poop shot.

I think you were looking in the wrong spot, Blue and BBE!  It is visible at this point on your video (I have circled it in red).  Start looking from 16 on the slider and you will see it appear and curl upwards.

Wow,  for sure Madrona and AJL have 20 / 20 eyesight

:investigate2    With my trusty sleuth's magnifier honed in on Blue's video;  I do see a 'white blob on the move' at about 16 sec. mark.

Well done ladies.

Great job, as always, by all involved.

Sequel to follow, I'm sure.

Thanks, Madrona.  That was a wild goose chase, not quite literally.

On Chat it was described as being to the left of Mom.  I see the poopshot now and would describe it as being directly behind her tail and below the nest - BEFORE a vehicle went down the road.

What we need now is a Super-Secret Invisible Poop Shoot Protector Screen so that nothing keeps us from being able to see the eggs and chicks with the CU cam.   :binocs

Something like that must be available.  And it will help with Charlotte Dinner's smudges, too.  She's not a very tidy tenant.    :ecnono

Laurad (London, England) has relatives, the Fletchers, living not far from us on Hornby Island.  A couple days ago Sheila thought she saw Alan Fletcher on the ferry, but we agreed it couldn't be because he was in London visiting Laurad.  Yesterday at the Cardboard Bakery (the pizza place), I thought I was seeing a ghost - looking just like Alan Fletcher.  Hesitantly, I approached him, "You are Alan, aren't you?"

Puzzled, he said "Yes", obviously wondering what this was all about.

"You are supposed to be in London visiting Laurad".

"Oh, that's my sister Jose who is visiting".

Today, while walking around Helliwell Park we saw what looked like a big black bear ahead of us.  It turned out to be a woman walking a dog.  We learned that the dog's name is Sasha and not only that, but that the owner of the dog is Jose Fletcher (who is visiting London).

So hand it on to Laurad and Jose, that Sasha is very happy.

Doug, what an interesting day for you! Indeed it's Jose and her sister Penelope (who lives in Paris), who have been in the UK visiting, the latter staying with me. Alas, I have not seen Jose, but I did speak to her and she leaves tomorrow, so I probably will not be able to pass on the message about Sasha. We're hoping Alan may visit again one day soon - they are all cousins of my husband. It is indeed a small world and I have been to Hornby Island once, many years ago, long before I was even aware of Bald Eagles.

Answering Arizonafan's post in Doug's updates:   Thanks for your comments and congratulations on your first post.  I was so frightened of posting, I sent any comments in to Mary Jane by e-mail and she would post it for me.  After a year and a half I finally got brave enough to post myself.
I am quite pleased with my dahlia planting this year - planted 120 tubers.  Previously I would dig 120 holes and end up watering each one by hand with a hose.  This year I planted the tubers along trenches and laid down soaker hoses.  Now I just have to turn on a tap for 15 or 20 minutes ....  and turn it off again.  It makes me smile just to think of the ease of it all.  Do you grow dahlias?

It's so nice to have you in the chat room with us, Doug.  Everyone enjoys it when you chat with us.    :eclove

That looks like a much better solution to watering the dahlias and it'll give you more time to enjoy them and do other gardening.  When they are blooming, please make a video so we can see them, too.  If you include a few close-ups, maybe we can make a jigsaw puzzle or two.

A colorful flower filling the whole frame is what I have in mind.   :ecsmile   The best shots for puzzles are not centered...makes it more interesting if the flower's center isn't in the middle of the picture.  Does that make sense?  I hope so.  If not, please let me know.   :nod2

Many thanks for sharing the eagles, your lovely garden and beach scenes, and for both of you being such kind and generous people.

I was having difficulty signing into the chat.  I didn't want to go to facebook to sign in each time.  On the separate registration, a cell phone # was required. I didn't want to give it out, and figured many other people might not want to give it out either. I sent an email to webmaster there and got a reply from Peter and Graham, saying that question would be removed in minutes.  That it was a remnant of before.

Wonderful response and response time, too!

Basenjimom, maybe you need to unblock the ads again to register for chat. They have worked hard to remove any possible way to avoid the ads.

The new site is definitely interesting - but no one in chat to test that out.  Also, my old log in for the chat does not work - is anyone else having that challenge?  For the cell phone - I just used 1111111111 and it took.

I still have ad Block off but do not have the WE or FB option in the chat box in which to sign in.

Edit:  just tried the main site log in, but it logged me in as my first name, not my chat name.

I faked the cell phone number too. I am in there njoyneagles. I don't know why I don't see you.

PLEASE READ:
If you cannot log in, it will require you to re-register. Your email address is required and they ask for your first and last name. What you put in the first name box will become your Screenname. Beware.

PS. I post this now as things might change throughout the day. So, let's go with the flow.  :heart

Funny thing is Raj, I already re-registered with the New WE site through OM a couple of days ago.  It gave me the option of a chat name and it has been working fine all weekend as basenjimom.  I plugged in the new login info at Hornby and it uses my first name.   I just went back to OM and I'm still basenjimom.  Must be a glitch at HE site.

BTW, not complaining, just stating this in case the information is useful down the line when they work on the kinks :)

Edit: in chat right now and am all alone :(  Raj you still there?

njoyneagles - I believe the cell phone issue is being handled - both Graham and Peter commented on Facebook that it was an error and will be removed.

I might give it some time and see if the chat issues get resolved - if not, then it seems that the more people they hear from (respectfully, of course), the more they will realize that other issues need to be addressed. I can imagine that with a big change like this, it will take some time to smooth out all the bumps.

Graham's Facebook page might also show you what else people are saying:
http://www.facebook.com/graham.wallington?v=wall&story_fbid=106319742761759

(I can't even get the cam or registration page yet  -  I just a flash of black and then a white page)

k i registered to the new chat as
typoscount2
fake last name
only the email needs to be a working one

i got in , my chat did not work well , but i see i am there with an invisable person, that being the moderation bot program i am assuming, as there is a one line flood control set up in there already.

soo , once they hook all their servers up to set things in motion all signed in will likely see each other , but till then, i am hanging out in the old style zap version cam /chat.
i cant see the fb , does wildearth have a fb open to anyone page with some kind of report?

TL, others have had that problem - Graham posted on FB:

The DOB is important because our advertisers need this information to place ads. The DOBs go back to 1920 on a scrolling drop down menu. Try again and see if you can get it right.
Please always remember that WE will never tell anyone how old you are. This info is kept in a database and is only used for ad tracking and only in the future. Its not like WE are going to display your age to humans. :)

BBE,  Graham posted on his FB page:  the new site does not use any old log in info. You will need to either log in afresh or use Facebook Connect.

Someone replied that they were able to get in through Facebook Connect, but did not want to do that - and Graham replied:

I don't know if this helps you, but the registration process at the new WE site needs to be a new registration. Your old reg is not recognized. Hope to see you soon.

Just a reminder, too, if you do not know and trust the person who posts a link in chat, do not click on the links. People get their kicks in strange ways and "infected" links are a nightmare.

We have a great tutorial for the chat here:

Hope that helps.  If that doesn't help, it could be that the programmers are working on the problems??

Message from WE programmers re: fixes they are currently working on. And we have more things on a list for them too. lol  Don't despair, it'll get worked out.

Since so many of us are having trouble with signing in, registering, etc., it probably would be a good idea to just not try to do any of those things until at least tomorrow...or until WildEarth can sort it all out for us.   :eclove

You might try some of our ONZ forum jigsaw puzzles, made from our members' and relatives' nature-related photos (with their permission).   :ecsmile

This evening some of us have been seeing different colours and such in the chatroom. First we were seeing some blue banners and some gray banners, without spaces between the colours. Then we saw various shades of blue flowing into each other, and then blues plus white. Then it changes to various colours with dark lines. This is one of the new 'looks':

It would be nice to have less color...I hope they get rid of all that blue.

URGENT!  If you intend to view the Hornby camera through the zaplive site/chatroom be warned that it is currently under attack by a troll/hacker.  An individual is 'flooding' the chatroom with huge volumes of copied text from the new WE chatroom which causes your computer to 'freeze' and might possibly cause a crash.  Do not attempt to go there - and if you are there and see attempts at flooding, LEAVE IMMEDIATELY - if you can.  I just managed to exit that site when it happened a couple of minutes ago - even so my computer stalled and it was an anxious few moments.   :mgritted

Madrona.  Is it possible for you to add your last post, URGENT!  If you intend to view the Hornby camera through the zaplive site/chatroom be warned that it is currently under attack by a troll/hacker.  to the Forum news heading? i.e.,

News: Beginning on Saturday, September 11, we will be doing software and hardware upgrades to the computer on Hornby Island. The chat room should be up and running but the cam will be down for several days. The cam is planned to be up and running before Mom and Dad Hornby are expected to return in October
.

I don't know what the protocol is for that News headline, or if you can have more than one, but just thought that if people who sign into the Forum could see the headline immediately, they wouldn't have to search and search different topics to try to find out what is wrong with the chat room.  Just an idea.

Thank you for the WARNING, and for all you do for us.

Another morning like this one is definitely not needed.

With the Zaplive chat under attack (which froze my computer when the chat was flooded, and I couldn't get signed out or do anything - even turn off my computer) - and the colour/visual problems at the new WE chat unresolved, I will no longer be chatting except through the forum.

If anyone wishes to communicate with me please either send me a PM on the forum or an open message like this one.

Over and out until we are notified that the problems are resolved.

Using the chat thread we have is not quite the same, but it is a good alternative.  Remember - there is a report to moderator function at the bottom of each post - and don't be afraid to use it if a troll should happen by.  We do have control over the forum and will delete and ban people who misuse and abuse it.

I was just there too, and it looked to me that it was not "xxxxxxx" who posted that, but someone without a real name.  Where our names are to identify the poster, this one was just "---" three dashes and no name.  Then it went all crazy and I got out just in time before it froze up my computer as it did once before.  I am so furious that people like this have nothing better to do with their time than to be mean and disruptive to others.  They must have a pretty pathetic existence and I guess if it didn't make me so angry, I should feel sorry for him/her.  I haven't heard whether this has become a problem yet on the new site.  I've popped over there a few times, but there aren't too many people using it.  It looks a lot better now, without those colourful "balloons."

The chat rooms have had many problems lately - someone is "flooding" the rooms with posts and causing our computers to freeze up and making it impossible to use the chat room.  Hopefully this situation will be fixed soon and we will be able to resume using it.

Dizzymom, thanks for posting the screencaps. I haven't been in the chatroom lately so was curious what was going on. That's sad ... but I liked Raptorman's response and wish it were true. I don't know why hackers do what they do, but my guess is it's just because they can. Or it makes them feel smart that they've figured out how to disrupt something because they're no good at creating something. Or they don't have anything better to do. Or they desperately need attention, even from people they don't know. Or they're just plain dumb. Or all of the above. They're the kids in the back of the room shooting paper wads instead of dropping out of school and doing something they love or getting some help with their disability.

Thank you for posting that notice, sal.  It does appear that ZapLive is ending their broadcasting as of October 1.

WildEarth has said that they will be making archives available- it would be great if we could confirm that they will be archiving the 2009 Hornby files as well as the 2010 archives.

The WE blog had a recent post by Peter Braat and I have reproduced some of the text here

Original post:  http://blog.wildearth.tv/2010/09/brand-new-web-site.html

~~~~~~~~~~~~
<snip>
Now, if I would try to summarise your feedback so far in one sentence I think it might go something like this: "The new site looks great, but where are the archives and could you change ... on the new chat room?"
Firstly, the archives. To paraphrase a favourite action here of mine: "They'll be back!", and bringing them back has the highest priority now that the site has launched. One important point to note is that while the archives are currently not accessible on the new site, the recording continues so no sightings will be lost.
Also, as those of you who've used the archives, and especially those that have been creating seek points/hotspots know, the 'old' system was not very user-friendly. Therefore it would not do to simply try to rebuild it as it was. This is a unique opportunity to come back with something much better, more intuitive, something user-friendly and simply plain fun to use! More information on this will follow soon.
The bottom line of the zap notice, other than they won't be available free after Oct. 1.. Is that if there is something that we see on a cam now, we need to save it ourselves for the time being.  There isn't archiving available for now, for making hot spots, or saving the cam feed.
Title: Re: Discussions from LIVE CHAT
Post by: NancyM on September 22, 2010, 06:22:31 PM
emc, WildEarth has said that archiving will continue and nothing will be lost. However, because WE has to build a new program to let us see the archives, it will be an undetermined amount of time until the archives are actually available.
The links to ZapLive will no longer work, as they have shut down their tv broadcasting section as of this afternoon (Wednesday, September 29).
The cam and live chat are available through  http://www.wildearth.tv/#/Home
LauraD has FTPd the new chat page to the Hornby Web Server.
This can be our new chat page while WildEarth continues working on improvements of their chat host:
Hi, I'm sorry if this has been discussed before but I'd like to suggest that since we're staying on this new chat location for a while, would it be possible to standardize on some things? It is very hard for my eyes to keep up with the many type styles and colors in the chat. I notice a lot of the HEG people put a "hornbyeagles" at the end of their nickname -- that really helps. Do all the HEG and "experts" do that? Could we ask all the HEG people and knowledgeable people to use the yellow background, to help them stand out? And then ask other people not to use it?
I would also love it if we could encourage people to not use the italic-style fonts and to stay away from the dramatic colored backgrounds -- stick with simple bold face type instead. Those wild colored backgrounds boggle my eyes. But that may be too much to try to control...  Again, I'm sorry if this has already been discussed. Thank you for your consideration! :-)
Hi Lida.
you are not the only one that doesn't like the colors and fonts.  You can turn all that off with the little "x" at the bottom of the chat box.  Hope that helps.
Also...the hornbyeagles folks DO use a bright yellow or orange color, Booni...AJL....Doug...Sparky.....however, if you have the colors and fonts turned off, you won't be able to see that.
But Hornby Eagles folks are not the only ones who use the yellow background. I like the "hornbyeagles" ending on HEG members user's names. It does help to clarify a bit.  :nod2
 :gaah  i had a terrible horrid pornographic message/long story  sent to me through chatngo today. i dont think they are a eagle watcher as i did not recognise the name/numbers they were using. i have my profile locked down as far as im aware and only am supposed to get messages from people who are on my friends list. i only have one person on that list and she is a very respected lady on our nest so i know it did not come from her, even in another name. if anyone gets a message like what ive just received please report them because it tells me they will not get banned unless many people report the person. i have deleted the message and banned them from doing it again to me but it means they are still free to send to others.   :mgritted
I’m offering some suggestions about chat. Today AJL was trying to explain some things in chat and was unable to make her points because chat was flying in spite of her asking for people to slow down. As is always the case, most people don’t see the request or are unable to sit on their fingers. What she was saying was important: She feels the fears raised in the chat room quickly spread to others and create panic, and this plays a big part in making mountains out of molehills -- which makes all problems harder to solve and some impossible.
1. Make a 2nd Hornby chat room for socializing, recipes, health concerns, talking about other nests, reminiscing, etc. and reserve this chat room exclusively for talk about Hornby Eagles. Make this clear in the labelling and all links to chat. Call it the Hornby Auxiliary Chat or The Hornby Annex or whatever.
This would require mods in the main chat room to firmly direct chatters to the 2nd chat room and then if they did not do so, kick/ban them. That means hurting some feelings. That is part of the deal when you’re moderating a chat room, you have to hurt some feelings sometimes.
I suggest that all mods be in a large bold font along with your yellow dresses, and require other chatters to NOT use that font, so that they stand out.
The mods can post reminders every five minutes or so, a prewritten script they can post into the chat reminding chatters to please take non-Hornby discussion to the other chat and that people who don’t will be booted without warning. (Obviously it would be impossible to eliminate all non-eagle conversations, but it could greatly reduce it and thus slow things down.)
It’s very easy to make another chat room in Chatango, and people are logged in already so they don’t have to log in again. A person can be in both chat rooms at the same time and can have both windows open side by side.
I would suggest the Annex would be unmoderated – clearly posted as such, that no attempt is made to moderate it and people enter at their own risk. Schools could load only the main page.
2. Mods can post an update “Today in the Nest” every five or 10 minutes, briefly stating what everybody wants to know when they join. Example: “Welcome to all joining. Today the eaglets have eaten twice. Mom brought a small fish which Alexandra got, both eaglets got some of the other fish. David flapped and jumped. All is well in the nest.”
I realize this is small potatoes compared with the current issues, but I am just offering it as food for thought, in the event that this all continues. No need to reply.
Thanks for all you do, all of you.
Thank you for the thoughtful suggestions, LidaRose9. A lot has been learned this year so I am sure that the chat will be better next year.
