Title: Discussion ~ Hornby Eagles Nest & Territory Cam 2012-2013
Post by: NancyM on September 29, 2012, 01:41:40 PM
Welcome to the discussion thread for the 2012-2013 season of the Hornby eagles. This will be the first full season with HEGPS' Nest & Territory webcam, which gives us a broad view of Mom and Dad's perch trees as well as the nest tree.

This cam originally came on line in April 2012. In September, Dan and Dale of Whiskey Jack Tree Services raised the cam another 25 feet to a higher position on Gregg's Tree. This video shows part of the cam raising and some of the spectacular views that we now have.

The View
Winterwren has prepared a map of Mom and Dad's Territory, with all the perch trees labelled:  http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1151.0 (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1151.0)

Labelled views from the camera can be found here:  http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1152.0 (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1152.0)

Season 24
The eagles built their first nest in this tree in late 1989, and as far as we know, the same pair continues to nest here. The first nesting season was in 1990 and 2013 will be nesting season #24.  Answers to many basic questions about the nest and about Mom and Dad and their offspring can be found in the Reference Center of this forum: http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?board=26.0 (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?board=26.0).  The Ground Observations topics for the last few years also have a rich visual history thanks to boonibarb, a resident of Hornby Island.

A few screencaptures and videos from years prior to 2010 can be seen on our website: http://www.hornbyeagles.com/gallery.htm (http://www.hornbyeagles.com/gallery.htm)

Arrival on Hornby Island
Each year in late August, the eagles leave the Island and go in search of the salmon runs, where they feast on the spawned-out salmon. Each year, they arrive back on Hornby in early October, having been away for roughly 6 weeks. We expect Mom and Dad Hornby to arrive back any day now and are having a contest to see who comes closest to the actual date of their return, as seen on the webcam, and their first visit to the nest. Contest link: http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1229.0 (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1229.0).  October 2 is the day they are usually spotted in their territory, and they usually visit the nest within a couple of weeks after that (see Doug's Timetable:  http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=38.0 (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=38.0)).  In 2011, their return was a bit later (Oct 10 for the first sighting of Dad in his territory).

Please feel free to discuss the eagles and what you see on the nest in this thread - plain screenshots or links to videos from the broadcasts are welcome here also.

October 5
Eagles visiting in Mom and Dad's territory. One (at least) is spotted on the BabySitting Tree and the Peter's Tree, both are heard calling and trilling. At first, we thought these eagles were Mom and Dad, but close scrutiny of booni's photographs proved otherwise.

The large eagle that we first took as Mom (but isn't) has a unique voice - sort of a "chuff, chuff".   This video clip from Oct 5 and Oct 6 is a sample of her voice.

October 16
Eagle on BST flies to nest at 6:58 PM - Mom Hornby is clearly home.

October 17
Mom Hornby is on the nest around 7 AM, Dad is in Foster's Fir (re Ground Obs, Mishi).  Mom and Dad toured the territory all day, visiting their various perch trees (Foster's, BST, Peters', His& Hers, Mishi's Tree, and the nest) and communicating with neighboring pair(Wiigs)

October 23
First delivery of nest materials.  Mom and Dad both bring clumps of grass and a fir branch.

November
A large (female?) eagle was chased by Mom and Dad. I *think* what happened was that an eagle - not one of the Hornbys - landed on the BST and was immediately chased off by Mom, who flew in from the left.  Dad landed on the CU box but then joined the chase.

Title: Re: Discussion ~ Hornby Eagles Nest & Territory Cam 2012-2013
Post by: NancyM on February 25, 2013, 10:53:34 AM
February has been a challenging month for the Hornbys. There have been young visitors to the area, spotted by boonibarb during ground observations.

More alarmingly, there were a series of confrontations with adults (or subadults), both in the air and on perch trees. One adult intruder landed on the nest tree and in the nest itself with Dad (Feb 8-11).  Dad was not pleased and reacted by beaking or wing-slapping this eagle, who seemed to be begging for food gifts from him. At one point, though, she appeared to push him from the nest (Feb 10).  Mom Hornby was not seen for four days (Feb 8-11) - the same days that this apparently female intruder was in the nest with Dad.

Feb 11 was a day of eagles displacing each other from the perch trees, and on Feb 12 we saw Mom and Dad mating on the Babysitting Tree. Since then, Mom and Dad have been together and the "chuffing" intruder eagle has not been heard, although an adult did buzz the nest on Feb 21.

Daily Summary
• Feb 1 – an eagle flew at another eagle in the BST, crashed through branches. No injured bird was found by boonibarb, the ground observer.

• Feb 2 – A third eagle was around

• Feb 3 – Visitor? knocked off BST, Mom and Dad mated on Constables, both visited the nest.

• Feb 4  - At least one visitor in the area.  Two confrontations on the nest, one in air.

• Feb 5 – At least 5 confrontations, including an intruder landing in the nest and getting trounced by one of the nest owners.

• Feb 6 – More youngsters spotted by ground observers; one perched on Mishi’s Tree when two eagles were in the nest. The “chuff chuff” eagle was heard (was this the same  "chuffer" that was seen and heard in early October?).

• Feb 7 - Mom was heard calling, young eagles escorted out of area. Chuffs were repeatedly heard.

• Feb 8 – Intruding female landed in BST, squealed as Dad was coming in. He landed in the nest, she flew from BST to nest.  Mom was not seen.

• Feb 9 – Intruding female was in the nest, in a submissive position making pleading or feeding calls, with her hackles up. The other eagle (Dad) moved a stick and then beaked the pleading female, also slapped her with his wing.  Mom not seen.

• Feb 10 - Intruding female was on the nest, and at one point appeared to tussle with Dad and push him out. Eagles spent the day displacing each other from WA cam, nest, BST. Mom was not seen.

• Feb 11 - Intruding female was seen on the nest tree stump and WA cam and probably on other perches; “chuff chuffs” were heard from the area of Gregg’s Tree.  Eagles were displacing each other from  BST, WA cam all day.  A subadult was spotted by booni, on the BST at 10 AM, chased off by Dad(?)  At different points, four and then five eagles were noted in soaring chases.  However, “cachunkas” were heard, so we knew that Mom was around although she was not seen on the cam.

•  Feb 12 - Mom was clearly around, but a third eagle was still in the area.  Mom and Dad mated in the Babysitting Tree.

•  Feb 13 - Mom was heard cachunking through out the day.  Mom and Dad visited the nest and mated on Peter’s Tree.

•  Feb 14 - Mom and Dad were in the His & Hers tree this morning, when a third eagle landed. They protested mildly, but allowed the other eagle to stay. Weather was poor.

• Feb 15  - Alert calls in the morning  Youngster again on H&H.  Mating on Peters’ Tree.

Mom and Dad alerting around 7:53 am- Dad is on a left branch down lower on the BST.

• Feb18 -Youngster visits the Glass House tree (near Grassy Point). Dad delivered a gift to Mom, possibly a bird with dark feathers. Several visits to the nest. A chase perhaps late morning and later in the afternoon when birds flew past the nest.

• Feb 19 - Nest visits, calls and alerts, mating on the Peters Tree late afternoon.

• Feb 20 – Two eagles soar nearby while Mom and Dad are on the nest and WA cam. Food was in the nest, which first Mom ate and then Dad.
Just before noon Dad delivered two clumps of grass to the nest. Dad was on the  BST and snagged a branch as he flew off – was he trying to snap it off?

• Feb 21 - There was food on the nest and an adult was seen buzzing the nest a couple of times in the morning. Both Mom and Dad ate well, but the dark-colored food was not identified.

great, Foldi! we hope you and others will add screencaps and comments.  I am just trying to play catch up for February.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
• Feb 22 -  Mom and Dad mated on the Peters’ tree in the morning and again in the evening.  Both visited the nest a few times during the day.
• Feb 23 -  Lots of calling and trilling.  Mom and Dad mated on a tree far from the ones we usually see them on – perhaps at the border of their territory. Crows were active and flying around. A large bird flew past the BST a few times, eliciting calls and trills from the eagles. A woodpecker landed on Gregg’s Tree and could be heard tap-tap-tapping.
• Feb 24 – Weather was really poor – low visibility and very windy.  Eagles visited the nest a couple of times, plus Peters Tree, the BST, and Hidden Beach. Dad brought a stick to the nest. Another eagle was seen soaring in the area and might have been chased off.
• Feb 25 - An adult eagle was in the area, was chased by Mom and Dad around 9 AM, and then flew past the BST several times.  Dad found food in the nest, Mom came to eat it. Dad brought a stick to the nest.
An eagle was in the His and Hers tree, and was driven away (at first we thought Mom wsa in the HH tree and was driven out, but now I think it was an intruder in the tree and was attacked by either Mom or Dad).
Mom was found on the nest at 2:14, defeathering a food item. Both Mom and Dad ate.  Chase again at 3:24
On February 25th Dad was seen on the stump of the nest tree. Relaxing? Guarding his territory? What a wonder it is to see the things that we once only heard, or wondered about!
I was so lucky this morning to have some time to sit and watch the cam.  I managed some screen caps of the sunrise and even saw Mom and Dad mating in Constables!  What a glorious way to spend my morning!!
February 27, 2013
At 6:49 this morning, the sun was rising over Mom and Dad's territory....
An eagle was spotted on Fosters Fir, and another flying....against the sunrise it was beautiful!  6:54AM
At 7:23 Mom and Dad were found in Constables,  watching the sun
They mated soon after this scap...I was so awed my clicking finger froze!!  But I did get a couple of scaps after!  Here they seem to be re-grouping as the sun rises in the sky.
Wednesday Feb 27 - Lots of calling, trilling, and flying about in the morning.  A dark youngster was spotted in the His and Hers Tree around 7:20, s/he stayed only 10 minutes or so.  Mom and Dad mated on Constable's tree around that same time.  Later, Mom ate in the nest. Dad visited the nest and was also spotted in the "Glass House Tree" as well as the His & Hers Tree, the Peters' Tree and the BST.
In the afternoon, Mom spent a lot of time on the BST and called softly to Dad when he landed in the nest and ate something; she did not join him at that time. Mom and Dad mated on the Peters' tree in the late afternoon.  A bit later, both visited the nest, and one remained there as the light faded.
Thursday Feb 28  - Another windy and rainy day on Hornby. Mom and Dad mated on the Peters' Tree in the afternoon - the wind was brisk and kept Dad in the air for a few seconds afterwards.
There have been lots of gulls and other birds flying around, the herring spawn should be happening soon and we expect to see even more wildlife visiting the area.
Friday - March 1
Another somewhat windy day.
In the morning, Dad brought a really long stick to the nest - looked like one of the pole-vaulter sticks he sometimes finds. It appeared that he landed really close to the stump, or at least on the prow.
Also from Friday (March 1)
11:40 AM, Dad delivered something to the nest.  Mom flew from the BST making her little calls of food joy.  She picked up the gift, which was thought originally to be a fish.  But ... is it really a fish?  :puzzled2
there is news that some herring are spawning not far from Hornby Island
soon we can expect  great excitement off the shore,  as the wild life  enjoys the herring spawn, and the balls of herring spawn out in the waters
this screen cap from 2009  taken from the hwf sponsered cams of that time, is  a small example of what the water can look like during a spawn
note the light blue green strip?
so keep watching and post  if you see something ; )
WOW! Lately when I looked in on Hornby it was windy and raining. I think we have a NEW camera don't we? These close ups were very clear. Is the camera higher?
Hiya Tarvena!
Did you see the rainbow today?
This new camera was put up almost a year ago.
It was raised higher in the Tree at the end of last summer.
So now we are able to get closer in to the Nest.
When it is a sunny day, the view in is quite clear!
The views of the Eagles on the stump or on the wide angle cam or when they are lower down in Constables* Fir or the Babysitting Tree are amazing.
Sunday March 3 was a busy day - a "juvie" was seen flying near the nest more than once, and Mom chased more than once.  The herring spawn should soon move in, and that might make things even more tense.
Monday, March 4
There were several visits to the nest, with Dad bringing in a number of sticks, plus three or more silvery fish (herring?) as food gifts for Mom. Two matings, one on the His&Hers Tree where it seemed they fell off! and about 45 minutes later on the Peter's tree. A young visitor landed briefly on the Peters’ Tree. Dad brought at least 2 (maybe 3) food gifts for Mom - at least 3 herring (silvery fish, not too big)
• 7:48  Mating in the HH tree (they fell off)
• 8:26  Mating on Peters' tree.
• 8:54  Dad flies to the nest with a big branchy stick.
• 9:07  Both eagles flew to the nest, one came in from over the water; Mom ate
• 9:19 Mom flies to the nest; Dad arrived with 2 fish (herring)
• 1:31 Dark-headed visitor sitting on the Peters’ Tree
• 2:40 Dad brings a (herring) fish gift
• 3:00 Having eaten well today, Mom and Dad sat peacefully in the nest for several minutes
9:19  It looks like Dad had 2 fish - one in each foot! He drops one just as he lands and mom is quick to accept the gift
one fish?
It appears the herring spawn has started on Hornby! At first light, we could see patches of pale turquoise water, and by later in the morning such patches were visible from Sandstone to Grassy Point.
Lot's of scaps Sparky!!  I missed all of that action!!  I did manage to get a few scaps this afternoon when I got home from mishimamas.  It seems that Mom and Dad were not all that happy about whoever may have been around their territory this time!
Dad is on the nest and Mom flies in expressing her discontent
Mom in back and Dad in front as they "watch" whoever is flying around their territory.
March 8....The rest of the story
A relatively quiet day by Mom and Dad standards.  The weather was spectacular, and I was able to get these screen caps!
Mom and Dad are lovebirds, resting now in Constables Fir
March 8 cont.
The sun is starting to set on Hornby.  The colors on the water are beautiful!  I am hoping the the herring spawn will be more evident tomorrow...but for now the quiet day was beautiful.  This scap was taken at 6:04pm
March 9th
The sounds on Hornby this morning are breath taking!  It sure does sound like the herring spawn has reached Mom and Dads territory!!
The sunrise was once again beautiful!!
At least five eagles of varying ages were spotted around the territory this morning.  Here is an unidentified eagle flying off from the top of the Babysitting tree at 6:50 am.
Sunday March 10
The female who was trying for Dad's attention a few weeks ago is back. Variously called "the chuffer" and  "banana", she followed Dad to the nest around 12:15 today.  He had brought a fish for Mom and did not want her to have it, so he mantled in the nest, calling softly all the while
Dad was not happy when this female took the fish he had brought to the nest.
Summary for Sunday, March 10
Today saw the intruder female, "Banana" as she is called by some, return to the nest and try to seduce Dad once again (she failed, but she did take the fish that Dad surely meant for Mom to have).  She was on the nest twice, from 12:12-12:30 and again a few minutes later (12:37-12:41), apparently following Dad around.
Although Mom was absent during the morning, she showed up at the end of the day.
There were several youngsters around, sitting on the Peters' Tree and other perch trees.
There was no evidence of herring spawn - we did not see any on the cam and booni reported that she did not see any signs when she investigated locally.
I caught this series of screen captures before much of the mayhem with the "guest" yesterday morning.  I am sure she was around at that time and maybe that is why dad was being so vigilant atop the WA cam!!
Here Dad seems
Summary for Monday, March 11
We did not see any sign of the herring spawn today, nor was Miss Banana heard or seen.
Mom and Dad spent the morning perching on the BST and the Peters' Tree, and made visits to the nest, starting at 7:30 in the morning.  They mated on Mishi's Tree around 8:35.
A youngster was chased off Foster's Fir in the morning, and the same or another one was knocked off the Peter's tree later in the afternoon.
Note from Tuesday, March 12
There did not appear to be much drama on Tuesday, but no herring spawn either. Juveniles/immatures continue to make bold use of Mom and Dad's perch trees. One was sitting on the Peter's Tree in the morning, and a second one was nearby.
That second bird lifted up and brushed past the one on the Peter's Tree.
That second eagle was virtually invisible among the foliage.  Our camera operators have sharp eyes though, and shortly after it 'shuggled', and before flying off, I made these composite screencaps!
thanks for the great screencaps, BBE!  I was watching, too -the eagle appeared to be a youngster, head and tail were definitely not white and he beak was not fully yellow.
Perhaps it was one of the two that booni photographed just the other day?  We have been seeing youngsters perching on Peters' Tree several times now
Typos - such great photos from last evening. The 'golden' stump has been a favourite sight to me for all the years I have watched. Nice to see one from the new cam.
We do have beautiful sunsets here. Today is looking beautiful. And I must away for a walk.
This Morning Monday  18 March. we found a straight line of white matter in the water .and suspected it might have something to with with Herring spawning . Boonie gave us this report, We also found 4 eagles on His and Hers tree while mum and dad were in the BST.
 Notes from Booni during all the early activity in and around H & H tree:  She saw nine eagles together, sometimes in His and Hers, once a group of four in Glass House tree, and also in trees to the left of his and hers, toward Niner's territory.  They were mixed ages.  One bird would fly up and the others would too, and fish. More flying about.  There seems to be a good deal of gull and other action farther out.  She says the air has the smell of herring etc. and there is foam washing up on the shore, with eggs.  However, the water is not the blue/green colour of milt; she found that puzzling.  She hopes that the action in the distance means the spawning is happening.  And that we will soon see blue coming in.  So, the foam was herring-related, there are eggs, there is much activity.
Summary for March 19
•   Two matings (7:09 on Constables, 12:11 on Peters Tree)
•   One grass delivery (10:18)
•   Mom and Dad soared together a few times, taking off and landing at the same time.
•   Young eagle (perhaps nearly 2 yo) sat on Peters’ for 10 min before being chased off.  another visitor was in the BST– this one had a white head and tail.
•   Lots of eagle activity in Hidden Bay area, eagles seen on the rocks at Sandstone, and flying in and out of Hidden Bay area.
•   Blue-green water, indicative of a herring spawn, was seen near Tralee Point, moving closer to shore over time.
The past few days, we have all been watching Mom for signs of egg laying.  We are still waiting, but certainly the nest is well prepared with grass and sticks, and Mom has been fed by Dad, and more matings have taken place ... The cover over the cam has been cleaned (thanks, Dan!)  - so it seems there is nothing more to do except wait to see what happens.
There have also been visitors of all ages perching in the trees near the nest tree  - some have been tolerated and allowed to sit and others are chased off. Be sure to check the Ground Observations topic for several gorgeous pictures taken by boonibarb of several of these visitors. booni's latest ones start HERE (http://www.ournaturezone.com/index.php?topic=1236.msg129485#msg129485)
I found this interesting link about territorial disputes in eagle territories as the eagles recover to the point there are too many eagles and not enough nests......  It seems to apply aptly to some of the behaviors we've seen here this spring!   http://phys.org/news/2012-11-eagles-deadbeat-dads-intrusions-wives.html (http://phys.org/news/2012-11-eagles-deadbeat-dads-intrusions-wives.html)
It's fascinating to see how the eagles are behaving as they recover from near extinction!!!!
OK, we have nestorizing, grasses being brought in, Mom calling for food from the nest, gifts being brought. All signs of nesting behavior and possible eggs imminent. But we don't have the eagles staying in the nest, and we have intruders.
 Is there a question whether the herring run was big enough this year at Hornby? There was one herring run, maybe two, but smaller than the last couple of years we've seen. Could this account for years when Mom and Dad Hornby haven't had eggs? It is really late now for eggs for them, is it too late this year?
EMC from an unprofessional point of view, doesn't look like there will be eggs. If Mom did lay maybe it wasn't strong & broke but i really have no idea on that, guessing. To me the herring run/s seemed small may or may not be a reason.
EMC, judging from what I've observed so far this spring and what Booni has reported, most of the other pairs on the island are on eggs. This is the fourth year that I collect stats, and from what I've seen so far, 2 or 3 or 4 of our productive eagle pairs seem to take a break or lose their eggs on any given year; this year fits the pattern. If the eagles were solely dependant on an abundant herring run to lay eggs, then the whole island would be taking a break this year.
Thanks for the informed input Wren. The eagles put a lot of energy into the eaglets each year. It makes sense for their own survival that they take a break now and then.  :eclove :nod2
Perhaps we'll worry less when we see them haggard toward the end of a season knowing this.  :heart
This reminds me of Sooty Shearwaters frenzy eating, but we aren't close up to see if they are flying around, etc. so can only guess.
Gerry and I saw this happen locally, and this is a YouTube video someone took, that shows the action and shows the line.
Probably still some Surf Scoters, emc. I took these photos from the water right at Grassy Point on Thursday evening.
There is a video where you can hear the flock taking off, with an amazing whistling of wings.
(Sorry, I can't get the other sizes to load. The second picture is clickable; the first one isn't.)
Looks as if the flock has gotten larger. There were a few hundred on Friday, but on Cali's video the line looks really long.
Amazing isn't it? Sooty shearwaters and surf scoters do this line feeding.
Thanks for the pictures.  :biggrin3
What you saw was actually just Mum & Dad, the trees were swaying as you probably noticed and was pouring rain, what looked like a 3rd head was the tail of one of them.  One of them did a "shuggle" probably because it was wet.
June 24  Eagle vs Otter
It seems that an Otter had a fish, and was up on one of the rocks near Sandstone Point around 1:30.  A large Eagle came swooping in, probably hoping to steal the fish. Although s/he tried for it a couple of times, the Otter was not going to let that Eagle get away with anything!  Cam drivers think the pair of eagles in this video are the Wiigs.
The clip is 2 minutes regular speed, then repeated in quarter-time.
