Post by: boonibarb on December 10, 2009, 07:18:11 PM
This topic is for discussion & fotos & videos of nest #24.

Here is Doug*s map of the Hornby nests, so that you can see where it is.

Nest #24 is very close to the Hornby Island Co-Op, where i do an outside job early in the morning one day a week at this time of year.
So i hear the eagles of this nest a lot while i am working.
Today i heard eagle calls while i was in the parking lot.
One of the adults was on the bent dead top of their nest tree.
This nest had one eaglet that i saw this year.

Here*s a foto from this past may of an adult at the top of nest #24 tree.

Title: juvenile on Nest # 24 perch branch
Post by: boonibarb on January 28, 2010, 06:35:14 PM
Yesterday, i was late for work doing my job on the Co-Op grounds.
i was walking thru the parking lot, & a large bird flew across the woods in behind, over the campground & towards the nest #24 tree.
Depending where i stand in the Co-Op parking lot, i can see the perch branch on the very top of the tree that houses nest #24.
It has a top to it, a lot like The Peters*s Tree - dead & bent & interesting.
In the perch branch, there was now an eagle!
i was looking at them, needing to get going to start working, but i just had a hunch that the eagle wasn*t an adult.
i was late, but i just couldn*t resist going for a quick walk to have a closer look at the eagle.
When i got closer to the tree, it was clear to me that this wasn*t an adult!
It was either a juvenile or an immature eagle.
i didn*t have my good camera on me, but good thing i had my smaller one.

(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4032/4312261635_4f11edc4d8.jpg) (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4032/4312261635_4f11edc4d8_b.jpg)

(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4001/4313030834_05678f2d8d.jpg) (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4001/4313030834_05678f2d8d_b.jpg)

i finally had to get going & get to work, but i kept an eye on that eagle & they stayed in that branch for over an hour.
i thought i would get another chance to photograph, but then they were gone.
i never saw them leave.
i was suprised that the Mum & Dad of this nest would let the young one stay there for so long, & would let them approach & stay so close to the nest.
It is the equivalent of Hope perching on top of the nest tree stump.

i finished my job & did some shopping, & when i looked up at the perch again, there were now two adult eagles there!
i*m thinking these are Mum & Dad of nest #24

Thanks for the wonderful story, booni.

Seems like Mom and Dad #24 claimed their perch but the juvi got to perch there quite a while before they did.

Booni, thanks for the update. A fine looking couple of eagles perched there.  You are so lucky that you can watch eagles while at work  :ecwink

So today i took Dooki for a walk from the main road near the Co-Op to Tribune Bay Provincial Park.
There is a beautiful trail thru the woods full of old growth trees that comes out onto the beach.
It was a trail built by kids doing the Katimavik program.
When we got to the beach, the view was beautiful!
There was this gorgeous silver yellow light peeking out from under the cloud.
But guess what i forget.
My camera.
So i had to walk back to the van to get it.
There was an eagle in the tree to my left, & you can see all the logs floating in the bay from the high tides & storms we*ve had.

i*m thinking the eagle in the tree is the Mum or Dad from nest #24, but i*m not sure.

If you click on the link to Doug*s map, you can find Tribune Bay labelled.
Big Tribune Bay is on the right, Little Tribune Bay is on the left.
They are divided by the point, Spray Point, which totally blocks off the view from one beach to the other.
The eagle flew from Big Trib beach to a tree on the point of Spray Point.

Post by: boonibarb on March 24, 2010, 07:06:07 PM
Today while working outside at the Co op i spied an eagle at the very top of the nest #24 tree.
i didn*t think that this was an adult, so i looked closer when Dooki & i walked past later.
i think this is a juvenile or maybe a second year immature eagle.
This eagle was perched here for at least an hour and a half.
It makes me think that the Mum & Dad here mustn*t have eggs yet, or you*d think they*d chase this young one away.
& i*m also thinking that this young one must be from this nest, to be perched like that on top of the nest tree.

Today after finishing my Co op job i took Dooki for a walk down the road to Big Tribune Bay.
On the way i looked up & there was this gorgeous young eagle in a perch tree across the road from nest #24.
i wish i had my good camera & tripod with me, as this eagle was really close!
i could have gotten some really good fotos of him.
However it was blowing & pouring, so my little camera will have to do.

Just down the road & across the street from this youngster is Nest #24.
Again, i wish i had my good camera & tripod with me.
i could hear an eagle making *seagull calls* from the nest, i believe, & maybe with my better camera i could have seen their head as maybe they are sitting on eggs now i hope.
Another adult flew over while i was standing there.

i take Dooki for a walk past nest #24 three days a week now, after finishing my early morning work at the Co Op.
i haven*t seen adults there for a long time, & i have never heard a screep coming from the nest, in all the times i*ve walked by.
Today, there were two ravens perched on the limb at the very top of the nest tree.
It is looking to me very likely that there are no eaglets in this nest this year.  :sad

On our recent trip to Hornby, we stayed at the Tribune Bay Campground.  Entirely by luck, our campsite was directly across the street (with some campsites in between) from the Tribune Bay nest #24!  Funny thing was, we did not realize it was the nest tree (thought maybe, or maybe a perch tree) until Booni was kind enough to walk there with me!  And, lo an behold, there was the nest.  We had seen a pair of adult eagles at Tribune Bay in the various trees, as well as being harrassed by crows/ravens, and were wondering where the nest tree was located.  :eclol  We also saw an adult eagle hunting/eating in the low tide among the rocks on a part of the Tribune Bay area. And we saw the Tribune Bay eagle being harrassed in its nest tree.  (I guess sometimes the ravens prevail, per Booni's post.)  I am assuming that there were no young eagles in the #24 nest, but the adults were definitely around the area as well as on the nest tree.  :ecsmile

Following are some photos of the Tribune Bay eagles:

Note that photos are clickable.

These photos were take on June 16, 2010 at the Tribune Bay Beach area.  Early afternoon.  The tree in these photos is not the nest tree.  This tree was near the beach, the nest tree is a ways up the road that ends at the beach.

These are pictures of the adult eagle we spotted in the rocks at Tribune Bay.  Still June 16, 2010 in the early/mid afternoon.  We were quite a ways away so not the closest view, but it was so great to see.  We never did figure out what it found to eat, as it seemed to go below/behind the rock where we could not see.  There were extremely low tides on the days we were on Hornby.  I love the shapes of the exposed rocks.  That evening, the tide came in and covered most of the exposed places from earlier in the day.

Again, all photos are clickable.

i was kept from being grouchy this morning, about all the garbage i had to pick up at the Co Op AGAIN, by the sound of eagles!!!   :eclove
Coming from the direction of Nest #24!
i looked towards the Nest Tree, & there was an adult on the curved top perch branch!
They were trilling & cachunking.
Another eagle flew over, & kept going.
Then another one approached the tree.
i thought they were going to land beside the other!!
They came close, kinda dipped down at the perched eagle, then kept on flying.
i wonder what happened there?
i heard a few more calls, while i was working.
i haven*t heard eagles at that Nest while working for a long time.
