Wonderful videos and sunrise s'cap.  :biggrin3

I don't see what is described in last one tho. I hear trills, flyby of ? left of nest. Dad lands in babysitting tree, Mum flys off to left toward water, circles round, lands next to Dad in Babysitting tree, happy trilling. Then Dad flys off to nest, Mum still in BST.
Is there another video with the duet fly out?

Willow, we may have chat on Ustream later. We are stretched too thin right now to moderate it. Wonder why you can't see chat on our page.
There is a page with no chat and one with. Here are the links:

A big THANK YOU to all of you who have and are making this possible!

Booni, thanks so much for posting all those videos... I like checking through here before watching the cam, to see what's been going on. We can also review the interesting events at the higher resolution, and get more from them.

That must be such a lot of work for you, and I want to tell you how much I appreciate your putting that time in for us.

Dad flies in from the left & does a hover landing.
He is on the close up cam box for a bit, then he flies into the Nest with something dangling from his beak.
He places it in the Nest.
Is he eating?
Then he settles in on the eggs.

Hmmmmm definitely something in his talon transferred to beak. Can't say it is a fish, but didn't look like a typical branch either. Cigar shape and size, lol.

Did we have a hatch today, or imminent? Seeing food brought in?

Emc, that was the 18th... Last Wednesday. Tests and trouble-shooting were still going on. At that time, the people who were working on the cam were wondering if this was sign of a hatch too, but there's been no repeat since; Mom and Dad are just sitting... So I'm guessing they're still incubating.

The cam has a recording device; Booni is going through the archives to pull out the interesting bits. Thank you so much, Booni!

Dad loves to arrange the sticks in the nest.  But this time it is Mom moving the sticks.  It looks like he puts it right on top of Dad.  He gets up and flies off, giving Mom her turn at incubating the eggs.

(I thought it was Dad, but Barb tells me it was Mom with the stick, so I have edited this post and the title of the video. Thanks, Barb, for helping me with this -- I do want the video to be accurate.)

1st egg laid:  3/19/2012

Thank you for the scenes captured by our screen and video cappers, also.  It's very nice to be able to go back and watch them again!

Here are Barb's observations (in her email to me):

We notice that Dad tends to land on the WA cam, whereas Mom likes to land on the stump of the nest tree.  Another way to tell it’s Dad, perhaps, is that he enters the nest from the prow towards the cam to incubate.

She's got a keen eye!

Great video capture of that 3:15 fly in/out, Paint.  When I checked my Obs notes from last year I saw that there were a few deliveries of nesting material - grasses/lichen - and I looked to see if that was a delivery, but hard to tell.  At the first it looked to me as though there was something hanging down - but it's a bit too choppy to tell.  Later, after this landing and departure, movements in the nest looked as though grass was being distributed.

I watched that video on full screen a few times (April 24 3:14 by Paintnut) and the incoming eagle definitely is carrying something largeish. You can see it most clearly just before he or she passes behind the WA cam.

It also seems to me like this was not a switch. The same eagle left.

Edited to add...
I've just watched the 1:45 video, also by Paint (thank you! they're gorgeous!) and at the very start, it's not a flyoff, it's a flyby, from right to left, and then someone lands from below right onto the CU cam. Both eagles are now on the nest and give a concert of trills, presumably to the intruder who flew across.

Thanks wren and emc.  That is exactly what I saw!   :nod2  It does look like something hanging down as s/he flies in.  I'm voting for it being a bundle of grass/lichen.

Okay, after watching Paint*s video of this time segment, i just HAD to download it from the archives so i could take another look.
Turn up your sound & listen.
Not long after the video starts, you can hear Mum on the Nest making her *food* calls!
Then Dad flies in with something in his foot.
She jumps up off the Nest & grabs it from his foot & begins to eat while he watches her.  :heart

If that was a fish, then it was a nice big one!

In Booni's video it's clearer that Mom is tugging at something. That would not happen if it was nesting material.

Recall, also, that Dad brought in another fish on the 18th (Booni's video, posted on April 22nd). So, are they doing more eating on the nest during incubation, compared to last year?
If I remember correctly, the fish that Dad brought in at the onset of Alexandra's hatching just got stashed until after she hatched.

(But maybe I don't remember correctly. And I didn't watch all of Phoenix's incubation, just the end.)

Okay, this is a long video & it is 1:44 in to the video before we see a fly by.
At around 4:25 into the video, we hear vocalizations, which i call screeing.
i think this is when an intruder, or i want to call them a visitor because of the vocalizations i hear, is spotted.
At 4:50 into the video we see Dad fly in to the wide angle cam.

This is the continuation of the sequence.
At one point in the video the cam pulls back & we see that there is an Eagle in the Babysitting Tree.
i believe this to be the visitor, not Dad.

Okay, you gotta watch this video full screen!
Click YouTube in the lower right of the video screen, then click full screen when it opens up.

When the video starts, we see Mum standing on the close up cam box looking out towards the water.
You can see the part in the feathers at the back of her head!
She is making her *food is coming* calls!
Notice how these calls get faster & louder & more excited, then Dad flies in with a fish in his foot!
She takes it from him & starts to tear off pieces & swallow them.
Then look closely.
Some she tears & swallows, others she offers down into the Nest!
We have a hatch!
Wooooooohoooooooooooooooooo!

And so the cycle of life begins again ... :)
Thank you for capturing the sequence of today's events that led from a storm-tossed vigil to the apparent first feed. These are moments - and videos - to treasure again and again.
Being a romantic (when it comes to the Hornbys), I prefer to think that Dad braced himself against the wind and held on the wide-angle cam to preside over the hatch process or at least the enlarging pip. That level of pride and care (that 'Dad-ness') is in keeping with our observations of this gallant, handsome eagle's behaviour in the past. Whatever, whenever -- there is every evidence of a newcomer on Hornby Island, and in our world, tonight - sleeping, and growing, under Mom's warm and protective brood patch. And we humans could not be happier.
Thanks again for all the work that went into allowing us to bear witness to the continuing miracles that unfold on this beloved nest.
And Booni, as usual, you are an enchanting and dedicated storyteller. My thanks and xo.

In previous years we have had the privilege of seeing up close and personal the goings on in this (and other) eagles' nests.  This year we get to see a wider panorama and it is so beautiful, so exciting and will add depth, knowledge and drama to Mom and Dad Hornby eagles story that we could only dream of in the past.

I remember when Alexandra fledged we watched David's comical expressions 'what the heck just happened and where are you going, sis?'  This year we will get to see all that.  YAY!  Thank you.

This is a bit of a confusing episode, but this is how i see it.
Dad is on the Nest, & at 34 seconds into the video, he gets up & flies off to the left.
At the same time there is a fly by from right to left, probably Mum joining him.
Listen & you will hear intruder calls in the distance.
At 1:25 into the video, Dad lands back in the Nest.
Then Mum lands as well.
Mum steps down into the Nest & Dad flies off.
Dad mustn*t*ve gone far, as at 3:40 into the video, as Mum is choosing her position to brood/incubate, we see Dad take off, from the Nest Tree in front of the Nest?
Mum looks up, then finally settles into position onto the Nest.
It takes her a lot of moving to finally choose how she wants to settle onto the egg cup.

It is neat to see the Territory Mum and Dad have for themselves. We can see how big it really is. From Grassy Point on the left to.... on the right ( and no, I don't have that part clear yet, lol). But it seems like a lot of ocean front property. It seems obsurd that they could ever have a lack of fish to eat. I know they have, but it doesn't seem right. They don't just eat one kind of fish, and you would think there would be plenty.  :ecsad  :mconfused

Booni, Thank you for the video!  I was watching at the time and was a bit confused as well - I thought Dad had flown off.  Typos (I think it was typos) mentioned that he probably landed on the "runway" branch, as we called it last year, but which is now out of our view.

Judging by the "feed me" calls, that would have been Mom on the nest at the beginning of Paintnut's 10:01 video. Did you notice that Dad was carrying something fairly large when he landed on the nest?
Title: Re: Hornby Cam Discussion 2012
Post by: emc on April 30, 2012, 12:48:20 PM
That was something large brought to the nest!  :biggrin3. Mom was feeding to the far right of the nest when we left close up. Has anyone noticed if she feeds in 2 locations or not?  Did Mom stay at the nest and the intruder was on the babysitting tree with Dad telling it, NO. ?

Another question: Does it look like egg rolling is still being done? In the video by beans,6:15 pm last night, it looks like nest fluffing by Mom before brooding, but I didn't catch any egg rolling.

See, now that's I think too, emc, that we will be able to tell if there are two chicks well before we see two little heads peeking over the edge. Watching the feedings, watching for egg rolling ... it seemed like, as Mom was feeding in that last video, she was also looking just beyond the one she was feeding. Dunno. But so exciting! I LOVE this cam!

You make my day!!   Wooo Hooo.

Who ever is on the Nest here has a dirty beak!
Mum!
She has been digging in the wet nesting material, i suspect.
If you have your sound up quite loud, you can hear faint Eagle calls in the distance.
i consider them to be *visitor* calls, calls made by Mum & Dad when there is an Eagle in their territory who is not necessarily a threat to them.
We also hear Geese honking, which often happens when we see the Eagles on the Nest reacting to something.
At about 1:25 into the video we hear Geese & a loud Eagle call.
At about 1:35 into the video, Dad flies up from the lower left corner & lands on the wide angle camera.
He is making his *visitor* calls as he lands.
Mum begins trilling from the Nest.
Dad is trilling too.
There is someone getting too close to the Nest, but they are not being chased off by Mum or Dad.
To me, this happens when the visitor is family, or a young Eagle.
At about 2:25 into the video, the cam zooms back & we do indeed see an Eagle flying by.
You can see them flying by from left to right over the water.
wren reported a young visitor to the Nest Territory later in the day, in the evening.
Perhaps this is the same individual?

At the beginning of this video, the Eagle on the Nest gets up & flies off towards the water.
But look closely!
There is another Eagle standing on the close up cam box!
You can just see their beak poke out to the left from behind the wide angle camera supports.
At about 25 seconds into the video, somebody flies by fast from right to left.
The eagle on the close up cam box spots them & takes off in pursuit.
The cam zooms back & we see an Eagle fly in from the left over the water.
We can hear trilling in the distance.
Then the Eagle jumps down from the close up cam box into the Nest to take over brooding.
Mum!

Oooohh...

You have to watch that last one full screen.
The light is absolutely beautiful, and you can see the eagles racing around.

Our cam operators sure are getting good! The camera zooms out and back in at just the right times.

I notice that when Mom is standing up in the nest, we can see most of her... So I'm thinking that it won't be very long before we can see one or two little heads in there, at least on these DVR videos.

Thanks you so much for taking the time to post these for us.

I was just getting home, just after 9:30 tonight... And as I got out of the truck I hear those strange sounds!

These are the sounds that you can hear on Booni's last 3 recordings.
The main screeping sound was loud, as if the eagle making those sounds was somewhere between the nest and my house. There were also some low trills from further away, maybe near the nest?

I started walking toward the nest.
After a couple of minutes, the noise stopped, and I heard a whoosh of wings. I glanced up just in time to catch a glimpse of a large bird, big enough to be an eagle, flying southeast along my road. Then right after, another whoosh of wings; the second bird was clearly an adult eagle; I saw a hint of white tail in the moonlight.

It was deep dusk, not quite dark yet. Good moonlight also.

Sure hope it wasn't an owl or something like that. Very strange
vocalizations, so high pitched and urgent. You can hear some farther away
then closer. Thank you so much for the recordings and observations!

Waiting to learn more and hoping all is well.

Maybe Alexandra wanted to sleep in the nest again.

Owls fly silently.
The two birds I heard and saw flying off both made whooshing sounds.
Of course I did not get a clear view of the first bird.

Unless of course both Mom and Dad gave chase to a third bird that I did not see... But I was watching from half a kilometre away. I don't know how likely that is.

 :puzzled2
It was not pitch dark yet: it was deep dusk, with good moonlight.

I thought I was hearing three eagles on the recordings, but now I'm listening again and I'm no longer sure. I thought I was hearing the warning whistle of another eagle - a sound that is a common part of the local dialect, but that Mom and Dad do not make. But now I'm thinking that maybe the higher frequencies of Mom's cachunks registered better than the lower, throaty parts of the sounds on the recording, and that is what we're hearing.
(Listen to 9 seconds and 15 seconds on the third recording, among other spots, to hear what I'm talking about.)

She has a dark stained tip of beak!
At 1:25 into the video, watch next to the trunk of the Nest Tree.
A big poopshot from one of the Eaglets!

The video opens with the adult on the Nest brooding.
They seem very alert & watchful.
At two minutes into the video, they suddenly jump up & fly off to the left, Grassy Point.
It looks like a taller to the left & a smaller to the right Eaglet head pop up & look around!

may 5 2012 14:05 - Adult takes off, we see two Eaglet heads!

The new map shows Gregg's tree Southwest of the Hornby nest, in line with the babysitting tree. All this time, we thought it was to the Northwest and we were looking at that angle across the nest.

I can't see the new position being correct.  :puzzled2 If so, we would be looking at the nest from the right of the stump instead of between it and the WA cam box.

Blue, I built my map from a Regional District map that shows all the property lines. I placed the trees on the lots that they stand on, then erased the lot lines and the roads. That area is subdivided in narrow half-acre lots, so there is only slight room for error.

I then cross-checked the map with a series of photos I had taken from the beach, that showed how the perch trees line up with each other and with Gregg's tree. I did not have to make any adjustments to the map as a result, so that shows me that the source map was accurate enough for the purpose.

The previous maps that you saw were simple approximations.

One of the interesting findings from making this map is that I discovered that the bearings showing on the cam are about 40 degrees off from true - and this might be the source of the confusion. But since the cam bearings are  only used for navigation within that system - comparing cam bearings to other cam bearings, not to true north - it was decided to leave that alone. We all know by now that the nest is about 20 degrees on the cam and that's that.

While Doug is not posting, a poster on the Hornby Island forum on the Hancock site said that Doug gave him permission to post this information on that site.

There are 2 eaglets.

It seems that Doug has named the first eaglet "Elizabeth" after Elizabeth May, of the Canadian Federal green party.  It was also said that the second eaglet is named "Rafe" after Rafe Mair, a retired politician and talkshow personality who has devoted many years fighting for wild salmon.

I don't know how accurate this information is. :dunno  Anyone else hear this or anything about the Hornby eaglets?

Hello Nubchai,
We're having trouble transmitting the cam over the internet, and are trying to sort out where the problem comes from, between the router, the modem, and the internet provider itself. People are working on it as we speak, but everything happens slower on an island...
I need my eagle fix too!
Sometimes everything is working beautifully, and then it all shuts down.  :puzzled2 (Ah, the joys of technology.)

Hawthorne, I haven't been following the Hancock forum, and so I can only go by what we've seen from the cam... For sure there is one little head visible right now, and yesterday there seemed at times to be a lot of movement just below the rim of the nest - maybe too much movement for just one eaglet? We should be able to tell for sure within the next few days.

Note and observation . In  remembering from watching this nest in the years gone past ,Its amazing to see mum guarding from the stump when before all we saw was the occasional movement up top and we guessed parent was up there .

Now we can see where and how close parent is when let on the nest by itself.

I watched closely last night, after cam went to night vision as it looked as though there was no parent around, then I thought I saw a movement on the nest behind where the CU cam box is.

9:33 PM an eagle (Dad) appeared and flapped over to the runway branch, which is now obscured behind the trunk in our view.  Then he flew back to the nest and ...
9:35 PM Mom flew in and commenced feeding the eaglet, while Dad flew to the WA cam box where he supervised for quite a while.   :hatch

You can see her popping up and moving around, and then she snuggles under Mom.  After all, yesterday morning was very windy, and she may have been grateful for a warm retreat.  :)

I want to thank Cawatcher, paintnut, and sparkie for all of their videos.  They are our nest cam historians.

Emc, when you want to watch one of these videos, if you can see a "watch on YouTube" button at the bottom of the YT window, click on that.

The only thing I can suggest is to go to the YouTube sites directly and find the video.

This morning at 5:43, Sparky spotted Orcas breaching past the Nest!
In this first video, you see one breaching at 2:10 into the video.
Look to the left of Dad, perched on the wide angle camera.
The Orca is travelling from left to right, past the Nest.
You will see others breaching as well, left to right.
Hint - If you click on the video, you can watch it on YouTube, click in the lower right corner for large video size.

I love these videos!  Good for you, spotting the Orcas!  I think we should rename you SharpEyeBarb.

As for the cruise ship, I can imagine the sounds of the bay, soft music, tinkling of glassware, and sitting in wooden deck chairs outside.  (Do they still use these chairs?)

One wonders what the eagles think, as they watch these events......

Booni, thanks for the great videos with orcas and the MV Volendam.  Is the appearance of the orcas a little earlier this year?

beans, it was 1998 (I think) when I did an Alaskan cruise on the MV Noordam (now the older and likely retired sister of the Volendam). I think they named a new one by the same name. Yes, deck chairs were out on the decks.  We locals call the Holland - America line ships 'the dam boats'. So easy to spot with their black hulls.  :eclol

I just went and checked the beach, from well into Niner's territory to past Sandstone Point, with peeks along the shoreline past the Wiig and Brigantine nest. It is very, very quiet, and there are no eagles around save for the residents. No big prey seems to have washed ashore. So either the visitors were following a moving school of fish, or else, it being high tide, they cruised around the neighbourhood looking for trouble while the seal and sea lion carcass were covered by water. Whichever it was, now it's low tide and everyone has left.
