Title: New Hornby Eagle Cam
Post by: luvthebirds on March 03, 2012, 06:05:19 PM
We are pleased to announce our new webcam, to be located on Hornby Island, with a view of our favorite pair of bald eagles.....  MOM AND DAD HORNBY!

We are introducing a new look at some old friends.  Our cam will be mounted in a tree near the eagles’ nest. We will be able to see the eagles as well as the area around their nest, from a different perspective. We hope you will enjoy the “new view”!

We feel it important to recognize the vision of Doug Carrick, who, in concert with the Hancock Wildlife Foundation (HWF), first brought us the Hornby Eagles.  Without their vision, we would not have shared in the lives of Mom and Dad Hornby, learning so much along the way.  We look forward to continuing to chronicle the lives of the Hornby Eagles.

We appreciate the generosity of the owner of “Gregg’s Tree”, who gave us the opportunity to make our dream a reality.  Most important, thank you to all of the fans of the Hornby Eagles, who have been hoping and waiting to see Mom and Dad Hornby again.  We are delighted to be able to share this new view of them with you.

We expect the cam to be installed later this month (March, 2012).

This is a map of the Nest Tree territory showing all the various Trees.

This is a foto Dan took from the Nest & that is Gregg*s Tree, 230 feet away.

Here is a foto of Mum perched on the the very top of Gregg*s Tree.
You can see that the trunk has a substantial girth.
in 2011 the Tree was pruned of all it*s dead branches.
There are not a lot of green branches left to catch the wind.
So we are hoping Gregg*s Tree will not sway in the wind too much.
Gregg*s Tree is 155 feet high, according to Dan.
The top of the Nest Tree stump is 120 feet.

This is a view of Gregg*s Tree taken by Dan through the hole in the Nest Tree stump.
i believe we are looking at the edge of the backside of the Nest, you can see the sticks.

This is a foto of Mum on the close up cam box form a totally different angle, that kind of got this whole project going.

This is how Gregg*s Tree looked before it was pruned.
This is Dad fluffing out his feathers to dry them.
You can see his incubation patch!

Post by: Mary Jane on March 03, 2012, 07:14:47 PM
This is a copy of what was announced in chat tonight.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoCF5KB6A44

HEGPS is excited to announce we have been given the opportunity to install a cam on Gregg's tree to give us all a new view of our beloved Hornby Eagles.  This will be very different from what we have seen in the past because the camera is 230' away from the nest.  We have purchased a PTZ camera with 37x optical zoom so we hope to be able to show a good view of the nest.

Nothing like this has been done before, that we are aware of, and we don't know for sure what the view will show.  We are hoping we can see into the nest reasonably well plus Mom and Dad flying, other eagles in the area, beautiful panoramic view of the area and maybe witness what happens with intruder alerts.  We hope to be able to see Mom and Dad perched in the various trees close to the nest and also if there are fledging eaglets we hope to be able to see them flying.  The equipment has been ordered - and we hope to begin installation within the next couple of weeks.

We appreciate the generosity of the owner of “Gregg’s Tree” and the nest tree land owners, who gave us the opportunity to make our dream a reality.  Most important, thank you to all of the fans of the Hornby Eagles, who have been hoping and waiting to see Mom and Dad Hornby again.  We are delighted to be able to share this new view of them with you.  Please join with us on this new adventure, as we all learn together what view we will have and as we learn to operate the PTZ camera.

Awesome News

Such fantastic news  :nod2.  'Dare to Dream', you all did and have created a miracle.  My first live streaming cam was when Mom and Dad Hornby made their 'live' cam debut in 2006.

My sincere thanks to the owner of the property where 'Gregg's Tree' is located for giving permission for the cam.

Heartfelt and loving thanks to everyone here who has given so much of their love, time and effort to bring this project to fruition. You are a talented, caring, creative and cohesive group. I do have some knowledge of what it takes to make a project like this 'fly'.   :ecwink

The video which accompanied the announcement by Jingles was so beautiful. I have watched it x 4 now and still have moist eyes.  Thanks Cali and also to whoever provided the muCafé

And Cafe Press / Mojo all ready have launched the 'new line' for 2012.  :ecwink

I know this is going to be an awesome season - with a new and expanded view. I can't wait  :biggrin3

 :ty  :redheart  :clap

:grouphug2

P.S. As our Boonibarb would say 'wooohoooo!'

Such exciting news!  I generally tend to lurk in the chat but I was there for the big announcement last evening and I have to admit I cried like a baby---of course they were tears of joy. I started watching in 2006 and for some reason or another I missed a few years.  Last year I was thrilled to watch Alexandria and David fledge. This year I again plan to be an avid watcher.  Thank you, thank you, THANK you!

Now, I should not have been surprised that HEGPS found a way to get a camera back on the Hornby eagles, but I was very surprised, and VERY HAPPY to hear the news.  I immediately made a donation to help defray the costs... not as much as I would like to have made, though.

So, BIG congratulations are in order to everyone involved with this project and a big thank you all involved, including the camera tree property owner, etc.  2012 is going to be a good year after all.  The Hornbys were the eagles that "got me hooked" in 2006 and I have been watching them and chasing all eagle cams ever since.   :mhihi :binocs

Big Eagle Hugs  :grouphug2 to all involved
and a Huge THANK YOU to  :bow our Heroes of the Year!!!

This is truly a wonderful and exciting thing that is unfolding.  It has been a labour of love and is in alignment with HEGPS stated purposes which are:

     (a) To educate the public on the importance of preservation of wildlife and wildlife habitat.
     (b) To stream or embed webcam(s) for viewing over the internet, when possible.
     (c) To provide educational resources (we maintain a website, forum, live chat, and Facebook page).
     (d) To assist and promote the work of wildlife rehabilitation and recovery centers.

While this is a HEGPS initiative I personally want to thank Boonibarb and Mishikeenhquay for their tireless devotion and effort to making this happen.  You are the BESTEST.   :bow :biggergrin2   :heart

Until last year, I didn't know eagle cams existed.  One day I was milling around the internet and just happened to find the Hornby Eagles.  Boy, was I in for a big surprise that changed my life. I fell in love with these magnificent eagles from the get-go.  I was hooked!!  I had never seen an eagle nest being prepared for eggs, eggs hatching and eaglets growing up and fledging.  Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would witness nature at her finest, by the grace of God, as the Hornby Eagle family has provided.

I would like to thank each and everyone who has ever had a hand in making the lives of the Hornby Eagles so much a part of my life.

Thank you HEGPS, Doug and Sheila and the owner of Gregg's tree.

I am so looking forward to the new view of the Hornby's.

Sincerely,

Be Still My Heart -- I am so THRILLED to check in here and see that you are going to have a Hornby Cam again!!!!   I have been watching since the year that Precious Little Echo passed -- and continued watching thru the year that Beautiful Phoenix passed (causing many hundreds of thousands of us to cry tears for a long, long time).   I've been to many other sites -- but Hornby Island will always be my favorite.  Here's hoping the camer is up and we have some adorable little eaglets this year.
Again, Thanks so much

Mary Jane I am just so happy :0  Thank you thank you.  The idea of a spring and summer without the Hornby eagles was dismal.

I am so totally happy about this news!  I was really and truly missing the Hornby's.  Did I see a post where Doug thinks there is an egg in the nest as of the 19th?

Thank goodness for FB!!  I just saw the post that there will be a new cam to view Ma and Pa Hornby!!  What wonderful news!!  I made my first trip to Hornby Island last August after watching the cam for two years. Even though the eagles were gone it was magical being in the place they (and many other eagles) bring their babies into the world. I'm looking forward to spending another season with this wonderful pair and their new babies.  :heart

Welcome to Our Nature Zone Chacooe.

The parts are in and it is being assembled and tested. :)

The view will be from above, but 200 some feet away but with a zoom lens. We won't know exactly what we can see until we have it installed and working. Go to this link to get an idea of what we will see from a distance and then zoom in. :)

The new camera & microphone. :ecsmile

(http://i756.photobucket.com/albums/xx207/mishikeenhquay/private/photo.jpg) (http://)

In the picture you see the camera itself and the microphone.

The microphone is covered with the windsock, and then placed into this tubing against "shock mounts"

The end  of the tube will be covered with nylon to prevent the wind from "whistling"

The microphone will be mounted on top of the gray box which has all of the connections from the microphone to the camera.

The camera is a 37x PTZ

The microphone is a professional shotgun microphone, similar to those used at sports arenas.

As you can see the equipment is being assembled and tested!

Hope just hatched.

To hear the great news about a new cam is beyond words.  Saying 'thank you' doesn't adequately express my feelings.  The coming together of old 'nest friends' and meeting new ones AND seeing 'our' eagles is truly a gift.

So blessings on all those involved, who never gave up the dream, to the landowner and to Ma and Pa for all the life lessons they taught us and will continue to teach us.  :heart

Kianaj, nothing like a new bobblehead being fed to make us fall in love. :wub

Some reminders to our faithful supporters:
As we get ready to install this equipment we want to remind everyone that we do not have any expectations for what we will see or hear.  We have purchased the best equipment that we could for this project, and are hoping with all of you to have wonderful views and sounds from Mom and Dad Hornby again.

Please have patience with our cam operators. They will be learning how to manage this equipment and your patience and understanding of some jerky movements or speedy panning will be appreciated.

Waiting for the start up of the new camera is very difficult.  :nod2  All will be revealed when the team has everything working as it should.  Patience is a virtue - - - -  :eclol

I am sitting here chuckling as I am reminded of a line from the 1965 movie 'The Agony and the Ecstasy'.( about the relationship between Michaelangelo painting the frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, and Pope Julius II, who when not off fighting to secure Italy, nagged Michelangelo to speed up his painful work on the frescoes.)

Michaelangelo would be up on the scaffolding looking up for hours while painting the ceiling.  The Pope would come into the chapel and look up and ask him "when will it be done?".  To which Michaelangelo always replied "when it is done".    :eclol

BTW - Charlton Heston portrayed Michaelangelo and Rex Harrison the Pope.

Update!

We know everyone is anxious to see the new cam. We have been testing it and want to tell you where we are at the moment.

While testing, we have seen some wonderful views of the eagles from a vantage point that we did not have before with the original cameras. The cam could not be installed as high in Gregg's Tree as we had hoped, so zooming to the very tip of the Babysitting Tree is not possible at this time, but we can see Mom or Dad sitting in the tree and flying in and out from it. We can see Mom's part when she is on the nest facing the water and the fly-ins and -outs from the nest are wonderful.

We have been able to identify a number of landmarks in Mom and Dad's territory and have some presets on the cam in order to "tour" their area.

We like what we're seeing, and hope that those who are anxious to see Mom and Dad and who have always wondered what happened beyond the view of the original cams, will like it too.

There is an issue we'd like to see resolved before going live and we are awaiting delivery of a part. Fortunately, we have some great help and we are confident this will be resolved.

What a terrific launch of our new cam.  :biggrin3.  We're getting some great tours of Hornby Island, which includes the eagle hot spots. Mom or Dad are snuggled down in the nest incubating egg/s, but we see them when they fly in or out for shift change.
