This was the first eagle nest I watched, starting in 2009.  I've just been reviewing the information on the Sutton website - there's lots there! It seems that this pair's original nest tree in the lake (probably an old dead snag) fell over in a storm and Sutton arranged to put up the pole nest for them, with cams, for the 2009 season. Sutton says this pair had raised 25 young in 15 years prior to 2009, so a well-experienced set of parents.

But they had some hard times in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

The first egg of 2009 was laid on February 6; second one on February 9; third one on February 13.

On February 24th a huge black trash bag blew into the nest and spent 24 hours before a concerted effort by Mom and Dad worked it close enough to the edge that the wind would carry it away again.  These are the only eagles I know who could be cited for littering.

The first egg hatched on March 21 - but I have no idea which of the three eggs it was.  The other two never hatched.  On April 1 Mom flew off the nest with an egg stuck to her belly feathers and when she came back it was gone.  The third egg was buried in the nest.

On June 9th the eaglet hopped up to the crossbar for the first time - do we call this barring? It's not really branching!

On June 16 the eaglet officially fledged.  The eaglet and her parents hung around until September before leaving the area for a period.

This is the very first screen cap I ever made.  Must have been shift change on the eggs.  February 26, 2009.

I wish I had pictures of the trash bag incident.  It was amazing to watch.  A standard size black plastic trash bag was covering three quarters of the nest. The two eagles spent hours trying to figure out how to move it away from the nest bowl.  They pulled and pushed, got tired, left the nest, turned the eggs and then turned their backs on the bag. Then they would try again.  The second day Dad finally managed to unhook it from whichever stick it was snagged on and it blew over to the side of the nest.  And eventually a gust of wind caught it and lifted it away.

I don't know why I have a gap from late February to mid March.  More photos may turn up in another folder somewhere!

But here are a series of pictures showing the growth of the eaglet.  And the plentiful food in this nest.

Noontime on  March 17 - RAT!

March 21 first day of Spring!  and Spring is what the people I was chatting with back then decided to call the let who hatched this day!  I'm guessing this was the first meal.

2010 was a hard year to be watching the Sooner eagles.  First of all they dilly dallied around for a long time before they finally decided to nest in a tree near the lake - which made it very difficult for Sutton to get the cam up and running.  Sutton kept the WA lake cam up too as the birds used that nest like a summer camp.  And fishing/hunting platform.

Sometime between February 14 and March 5 they laid three eggs in the tree nest.  The first egg hatched on March 28.  The second one hatched on March 30.  On April 1 the second chick fell from the nest and died.  Sutton's post about that day is sad - they had to be sure no one thought this was an April Fool's joke.

The eagles in Oklahoma are what is known as the southern race of eagles and they are smaller than the birds from British Columbia, who are in turn smaller than the birds in Alaska. The tree nest - and even the lake pole nest - is smaller than the nest we are accustomed to watching as well.  But even taking that into account, the tree nest was a poor excuse for a nest.

On May 3 the first chick hatched backed up to the edge of the nest at night, made a poop shot and overbalanced and fell to his death.  He was recovered from beneath the tree a day or so later.  There is a long Sutton post about this accident.  At first they thought a predator might have caused his death, but it does appear to have been accidental.

The third egg proved not to be viable though it was still in the nest with the eaglet until he fell.  On May 5 a pair of vultures descended on the empty nest and gave it a thorough cleaning, extracting food remnants from deep in the bedding and eating the addled egg.

A sad sad story.

Let us hope for Better things for this pair  for 2012. They have been observed working in the the pole nest . Also Mating on the cross bar of that nest. A few days ago the male gave the female  the gift of food on the nest. This is good indication of the intention to use this nest for this year .

Word has it that the Sooner eagles have decided to keep the lake nest as their dining room.  Today there was dead coot ripening there most of the day.  They supposedly have eggs in the old tree nest - the one they lost two lets from a few year back.  They have really built up the nest this year and shouldn't have a similar problem.

This is a copy of a post I made in the Vian thread a little while ago.

Sutton has made several posts in the blog below the cam which mention siblicide or Cainism.  Some of us have not seen any evidence that this occurs in Bald eagles, although it does occur in other eagle species and other raptor groups.  My guess is that several people (besides me) have written to Sutton expressing concern about this and today they posted a long entry on the subject, together with several citations of academic papers on the subject. The chatters below the cam have also commented on it.

This is a very long entry and I hesitate to copy and paste the whole thing here, but if you want to read it, go to this link http://www.suttoncenter.org/pages/live_eagle_camera  and look for the March 2 entry below the cam and below the chat space.

The Sooner nest had another tragedy last evening.  It was windy and E1 was trying to escape the bowl yet again.  Mom tussled with both lets and stomped on him inadvertently.  There's some thought that she may have stabbed him with her talon.  In any event, there was only one eaglet in the nest this morning.

There turns out to be another Sooner thread on a site called Window on Wildlife.  One of the Sutton chatters posted this animation made with screen caps there.  http://www.window-on-wildlife.com/index.php?topic=26.45  Scroll down to the bottom of the page to locate it.

Meanwhile everyone at the Sutton site is waiting for Sutton to post their opinion of the accident.  In 2010 when this nest lost two eaglets to falls, Sutton sent people out there and recovered both bodies.  It is assumed they are doing this again, though the body may be harder to find if he was carried off the nest when the parents switched last evening.

Tonight Sutton posted a long (!) essay on what they thought might have happened to E1 - with an excursion off into falcon nests. I am copying it here.  But if you don't want to read the whole thing, basically they are saying they don't think the eaglet was speared by Mom and that they don't really know what happened in the nest that night.

20 March 2012: As most viewers know, one of the young chicks disappeared over the past weekend from the Sooner Lake nest. I have reviewed the clip showing the adult stepping on the chick (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xc926dOI1fA). Actually, such incidents are not uncommon in raptor nests, and while the adults usually "ball their feet up" around unhatched eggs and around "just hatched" young, as the chicks begin to grow, parents sometimes step on their chicks accidentally with open feet or when focused on threats near the nest. Usually, the sharp talons do not have any impact on the chicks, as the primary contact is between the pads on the bottom of the adults' feet (rather than the talons) and the chick.

I have seen tame, captive adult breeding falcons step on their chicks numerous times, perhaps over one hundred, but have never seen a puncture as a result from such accidental "pressure" treading by a calm falcon. Captive breeding falcons that are wild, on the other hand, can accidentally step on their chicks and do serious damage when trying to protect them from a human intruder. For the falcons, extent of damage can be affected by the substrate beneath the chick that is pressed by the adult's foot. Falcons do not build stick nests as do eagles, but instead scrape out a depression in the dirt where they can lay, incubate, and hatch their eggs. In captivity, their scrape or depression is excavated from about six inches deep of quarter-inch pea gravel. This gravel gives away slightly beneath the chick that finds itself occasionally beneath an adult foot.

The nest lining in an eagle nest serves the same purpose. It pads the incubated eggs from the sticks comprising the nest, and it also pads the chicks that lie beneath the brooding adult. Therefore, the lining helps pad the chick that might be "stepped on" by an adult eagle. The eagles we are observing were not upset and were not protecting their young; instead, they were going about daily life in a calm manner. In my opinion, the eagle chick that was momentarily beneath the eagle's foot suffered no damage. And, it is normal for the adults to reach down and "scoop" the chicks back underneath them by using the adult's beak. The fact is that we really have no idea about the cause of what happened to the deceased chick, and we will probably never know. It is important to refrain from deriving conclusions when we have little or no evidence regarding cause and effect. That is why we need sample sizes with many observations before we can draw conclusions. It is documented that adult birds become better parents with age and experience as evidenced by their increased number of annually fledged young.  We are sorry we cannot offer any more definitive answers in this case. We know only that young eagles sometimes die in the nest for a variety of reasons.

The eaglet is noticeably larger and the down on his shoulders is starting to darken.

To continue:  Monday, April 9, 2012

Maybe if I were to examine some of the scaps I have made right next to each other I might be able to tell Mom and Dad apart, but this overhead view makes it pretty difficult.  So forgive me if I say Mom is feeding all the time.  I just don't know any better.

We start with the whole family in the nest.  I think Mom is in the center.

Then we have a good shot of a big foot!

And here the parent has done a very good job of burying Dudley - and also Eggbert I think!

But Eggbert wants Dudley with him and has gotten himself and Eggbert out from under the grasses.

What is that food item in the upper left?  I can't make it out.

Time to call in the experts.  Sutton chatters in a panic because Eggbert is sleeping with his leg out.  Someone worries that he has a condition called splay foot.  Sent these scaps to our expert for review.  Of course, we have all seen Hope and Alexandra and David sleep in just these positions - but not from directly above.  So it's hard to tell how natural this is.  AJL thinks he just fine.  She wants me to get pix of him standing up to poop.  This will be a challenge!

But here's the beginning of a new season. The Sooner parents have been dropping in and out of the tree nest and Sutton has installed a new and very sharp cam at the lake nest. Regular observers say that the hole in the tree nest (through which young lets have fallen in the past) appears to be blocked at last.  And the lake nest looks better than it did last season.  No way to know which one they will choose.

These scaps are from Wednesday on the lake nest crossbar:

Amazing news this morning!  It's Christmas in Oklahoma.  Sutton has brought the two Sooner Lake cams back on line and when I refreshed and saw them this morning, Ethel was sitting in her nest!  And then one of the chatters told me she has one egg!

No one knows (unless Sutton does and they are holding out on us!) when the egg was laid.  But my trusty Post-it says that in 2011 this pair laid at the end of February, first week of March.  Perhaps we will get to see a second egg being laid.  In 2009 and 2010 they laid earlier.  And in 2012 they laid considerably later.

Now I am in total shock.  Sutton just posted on their page below the cam.

Quote
28 February 2013: Good news from Sooner Lake! After the nest tree fell down (see the December 21 report, below), the eagles were visiting a couple of alternative nest sites, and ultimately went back to their original pole nest. We were able to replace some broken equipment yesterday, and are very fortunate that the aging cameras mounted on the pole above the nest are still working so we are able to have the close-up views into the nest. For longtime viewers of our nest camera project, having the eagles nesting here again is just like old times. To top it off, this nest has a very unusual 4-egg clutch!

Look at that last sentence!  When have we ever seen that before?

Wow, Maggies!  a 4-egg clutch - that is rare for sure.

I am not sure how many 4 egg clutches have been recorded, but raising four to fledge is daunting. One such nest was recorded in Virginia in 2011 (blog post HERE (http://eaglenest.blogs.wm.edu/2011/04/23/rare-4-chick-bald-eagle-nest-in-virginia/)).
In that blog post, the writer says:  As far as we are aware, this represents only the third 4-chick brood ever documented for this species.  The first was in 1986 on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and the second was in 2009 in the water gap portion of the Delaware River.

Nancy -  I just saw this post in the Sutton chat.  It seems the Sooner Lake pair had 4 eggs in 2008 - but only two fledged.

Quote
There were four eggs laid in 2008, but the cam was down for a month shortly after they started to hatch, so we don't know how many of them hatched; there were two eaglets when the cam came back, and both fledged successfully.

Sutton went and changed out parts and made repairs to the two cams today.  I missed it but several of the chatters saw Mom get up and roll the eggs - all 4 of them - shortly after the cams started working again.  It's a beautiful day in Oklahoma and the lake is sparkling!

Thursday (yesterday) was another nice day at Sooner.  Dad was on the nest for a good long while.  At least I assume it was Dad because of the egg arrangement when he finally decided he had enough. the eggs were uncovered for almost a half an hour before someone came back to keep them covered.

I do wish the biologist at Sutton wouldn't keep talking about siblicide.  Have we seen this happen on any of these cams in the past few years?  Many accidents, but no let murders that I am aware of!

People in the Sutton chat and elsewhere have mentioned their concerns about how 4 eaglets will cope in this tower nest.  GMSARC (Sutton mgmt) just posted a group of photos on their Facebook page showing the rebuilding of the lake tower nest in 2011.  It gives you a much better sense of how big the nest is - to see a fully grown man standing in it!  It also gives you a sense of how huge Mrs. Sooner aka Ethel must be - as she absolutely fills it!  Fred/Dad is significantly smaller.

Here's a piece of historical reference - a video from 2008 showing the eagles in the tower nest.  The commentary on the YouTube page says this pair is know to have nested starting in 1995.  As of 2008 they had fledged 22 eaglets with three fledglings in both 2000 and 2002.  Three eggs hatched in 2007 but only two fledged.

and now to catch up with current events!

Ten days before hatch - really none of us had any idea when hatch would come since there were four eggs sitting in the nest when the cam was turned on on 2/28/13.

One eagle in the nest, one on the crossbar.

Then the one on the crossbar went down to the nest and the one in the nest flew up to the crossbar - I think!

Eight days later:  Mom was very very restless.  I kept thinking she was hearing peeps from under her.  Some people swore they saw pips but I never did.

Then total shock!  There are two!

And now the scramble begins - feeding, feeding, feeding.  I must have seen five tries at feeding during the day and missed one or two more.  It took them a while to get the hang of it, but they did!

The "twins" are one day old today.  No way of knowing who is the older.

The first view of the "twin" lets and Mom at sunrise.
And the second view is the "twins" alone in the nest.

Then Dad came back to the nest (I think it's Dad anyway.)

This was followed in the middle of the day by a huge ruckus.  There must have been something in the area that made the parents very uncomfortable.

Parents flew off nest.  Chase?  Maybe!

One minute later one was back and admiring their little family.

Ten minutes later both were in the nest.  And Mom was saying, "you're crowding me Dad!"

Little lets are thinking, "OOH! Mom is B I G!"

The rest of the day was devoted to feeding after feeding:

Report for Thursday, March 21:  Third Let Hatches!!!

Woke up early and it was dark at Sooner Lake so no clue what had happened overnight.  Got into the office early and, to my surprise, it appeared the nest had changed:

When Mom left the nest for a bit it became easier to see:  Yes, there are three!

#3 was a little slow in starting to eat but got the hang of it pretty quickly.  And there seems to be little pecking going on - everyone has been getting food at every meal.

And then Dad brought in an enormous fish - which someone in chat at Sutton identified as a drum.

In the absence of sufficiently high stick railings, will fish work?

Ma Ethel decided some housekeeping was in order.  She spent a while delicately removing eggshell from the nest bowl.

Then there were more feedings:

Look at the size of that fish!

Then I don't know when this happened - but now there are two fish! Looking back it appears to have arrived about the time Ethel decided housekeeping was needed.

Maggies, I have peeked in every now and then on this nest (I wondered if all 4 eggs would hatch .... ). The nest looks so small! I do hope that the three chicks will do well.  Many thanks for keeping us up to date on this nest.
